Here's something rather interesting I've noticed.

After hearing about "how the games have progressed" on the Neo or just seeing the "KOF95 > GGX2" post from too_short for about the 30th time I was like "Ok lemme go back and play some of the older stuff that I own".

So I start off by playing KOF95 and honestly there are two good things I can say about the game:

1.) If you beat her just right you can watch King fall down after the match (if she's the last person you have to beat) and her shirt will be off exposing a rather nice rack contained by a blue *strapless* bra. drool_2 NOTE: Don't bother saying it, fuck you all King rocks.

2.) Doing moves like Iori's QCB+Px3 is MUCH MUCH easier/forgiving to pull off.

That's about it, I was kinda horrified at the state of the sprites and the music as it was pretty bad IMO. I wasn't into the Neo in 95 and I'd have to say comparatively speaking from that time frame I'd prefer almost anything Capcom put out by comparison.

I'd actually say KOF96 is where the series becomes "playable" for me, although I find it a tad to slow to be anything good for VS. play. The story is nice enough though where its fun for a single player romp and to make you appreciate how far we've come. Graphically 96 is leagues ahead of 94/95 with reguard to anything (sprites, BG's, etc).

Well I shouldn't be so rough on KOF95, I can't really get into stuff like KOF94, FF2/FFS, AOF, etc. I just can not get into these older titles, the only exception to this would be something like SS2 which I like but I enjoy SS3/SS4 more.

Even stuff like Waku Waku 7 which I love because of its hilarity and style, I can't really enjoy a VS. match in it because it plays so slow. One game I must say I really can't get into much at all is FF3, although I like it considerably more than FF2 or FFS I still can't really get past the "ugh" feeling when I play it.

I guess it's kinda because I came into the Neo later in the game and I don't have a "nostalgia factor" when I go and play these old games, I just know what plays really really well by today's standards (aka KOF98/LB2/MOTW/RB2). It's not all bad though, luckily if I ever want to play as the old style 95 Kyo he's in 98 and 02.

I see what you're saying, and a lot of it has to do with nostalgia, or what game got you into the series.

As much I like KOF '95, I wouldn't take it over GGXX; but, I would take KOF '97 of GGXX because I just love that fucking game.

I think only a few fighters really stand the test of time, with my picks being Super Turbo, RB, SSII, and anything KOF '96 and after.

And of course, there's the appreciation factor: Playing AoF today seems very "ugh", but you can't help but praise the game for what it brought to the table.

When FF2 came with my neo cd in 94, compared to the Streetfighter games, i ouldnt deal with the difficulty, and i had serious problems doing any moves without major practice, but i still loved it to death........though to be honest, i dont have any time for it these days, save the cd soundtrack buttrock

Realisticaly, its only puzzle & sports games that i enjoy from the neo past (with obvious exceptions) the newer games are much more appealing.

I dont know what i mean........but it sure is ........,..........something :D

I wholeheartedly agree. NEO and SNK has affected game history many ways, and has definately torn a distinct fold in our timeline.

And I don't believe its over yet.

Hendrix-

Just on the note of KOF 1995, it's a great game IMO.

It builds very well on KOF 1994, takes the good aspects of it and makes it even better while adding tighter gameplay overall. I actually love 1995's graphical style, it has a gritty, but very detailed art style. I love the music, I can just hear the tunes in my head right now. :) 1995 also has quite possibly the best backgrounds of any KOF game. They have so much detail in it that it amazes me every time I play this game.

The only downside to KOF 1995 is the damage factor. Moves take away too much energy in some cases. Let's not forget Ryo's SDM...it takes away nearly 3/4 of the energy bar. Great move when you are about to lose if you hit it, but overall a very very cheap move.

The first time I got to Omega Rugal was great. I was expecting him to be like Rugal Bernstein in 1994, but it's not entirely what everyone was expecting. :) Also having Saisyu Kusanagi as a boss leading into Rugal is cool. I'll never forget the first time I beat Omega Rugal, one more hit would have ended it. Somehow I hit 2 consecutive SDM's with Iori and followed it up with a crouching strong kick. One of my most favorite moments.

Honestly though Jimi, since you came into the Neo later on when the graphical style had progressed a lot compared to the earlier days, its more of an acquired taste. You may or may not like the say pre-1995 Neo Geo fighters with the exception of Samurai Shodown 2. I'm not a huge fan of Fatal Fury 1,2 and Special. Special is fun to play, but I don't play it much because I don't like the engine. I'm more of a fan of Art of Fighting 2 than Fatal Fury Special. I like Fatal Fury 3 a lot, as well as the Real Bouts and MOTW.

There are good games to be found in the pre-1997 Neo Geo games, not everything is fighting. Try some of the other games, you might be pleased with them. But to answer the question of the thread, I'm a fan of both old and new. The new has some killer games. But on the flip side some of my favorite games on the Neo are the games that came out for the system in 1991. :)

I'd take KOF97 or 98 over GGX, X2, #Reloaded any day of any damn week. I can't say that for 94-96 or 2k1. 2k2 is a toss up for me as is 99, 2k I'd take over GGX2 as well.

I mean people talk about AOF3 being some kind of uber game and for a while when I played it I was almost into for a bit but now when I go back to it it's like the rest of the AOF's, just blah.

I guess I really only like the faster fighting games.

BTW, the "epoch" was the ship they used in Chrono Trigger. The Neo-Geo is a game console. :p

Jeeze KOF2k2 plays faster than KOF96, 98 plays faster than 96. Fuckin a ask anyone KOF2k2 is the "fastest" KOF out there. I'm talking about how quickly moves come out/sprites move. Not how fast the matches may go or whatever obscure reference you're making.

And King is fuckin gorgeous. She ain't letting all her shit fall out ala Mai, but the girl has class, and if you look at 2k1's win quote or 95's falling sprite she's relatively well endowed I might add.

That and the fact that she's Ryo's bitch means nothing else.

Ahh well fuck you if you don't like her, she's hot as hell and I have the Dojinshi to proove it! loco

PS. You're right about the KOF96 AST it is one of the best ones along with 2k's AST.

I would call myself a Neo Geo Old school gamer who Was brought back by the new School

I used to have AES from 96-99 collecting some of the better known games at the time.

Metal Slug,Samurai Shodown 4,King Of Fighters 96,Metal Slug 2,Metal Slug X,Samurai Shodown 4,Blazing Star,Pulstar and many more too name a few.

I made a huge mistake in my life and had to sell all of my Beautiful neo geo items.

Then in 2001 I discovered MVS and started all over again.

Now I have more neo games then ever and PLAYMORE and the0magicbox have alot to do with why Im collecting again.

The whole neo geo is making new games thing really pumped me up.

I look forward to more MVS releases

Just got matrimelee 2 months ago and now I have Snk Vs Capcom.

I can not wait till Metal Slug 5 just next month!

I look forward to playing all the new arcade games this year!

I like the old school games that were never done again because they have no new school comparison. Some favorites being League Bowling, Baseball Stars, Windjammers, a few others. But with the fighters they just don't age well especially when put beside some of the newer stuff. Mostly though I'm not a huge fighter fan, and my Neo love is the Metal Slug series so I guess that's pretty new school.

I'm both... I consider myself quite lucky as I LOVE to play a lot of the older games like KOF '94 and '95 (which I still thinks looks pretty decent today to be honest), but I also enjoy playing the newer stuff too... I mean, I even have a lot of fun playing stuff like RotD, even though some people round here would have you believe the game was the work of the devil :)

Going back to the older stuff though, the first MVS cart I ever bought was Art of Fighting. I know the game looks like ass now, but I quite often leave it in my 4 slot as I always enjoy firing it up and playing for half an hour. In fact, most of my absolute favourite Neo Geo games are the older ones, mainly because they were the ones I grew up playing, so I have some very fond memories of them.

I know where you are coming from when you say it's hard to appreciate the older games because you weren't a Neo Geo player back when they came out. One game that I don't enjoy playing at all seems to be one of the most loved games out there: Magician Lord. I'm not saying it is a bad game, but as I never played it in the early days (the arcade I went to back then only ever had fighting games), I just find it hard to appreciate. I can understand why people like it though and I guess it was an amazing game back in the very early nineties, but to me it is no different to any other 2d platformer.

/me gets ready for the Magician Lord fans to come over and beat me to death wink

Magician Lord is one of those games where I don't see the beauty. I mean what was released at the same time as it? Sonic 1 and Super Mario World. Both are on inferior hardware and look infinitely better, not to mention the fact that they're about 23498710497 times more fun to play.

There Kaz, now the ML fanboys can hang two people. I hope you're happy. :D

KOF '95 is SNK's Super Turbo... once this is realized, even a new school gamer should be able to enjoy it. wink

The thing is with the fighters, they've progressed through so many updates & improvements that the older editions are never going to be as impressive as they once were - but stuff such as 2020 baseball and ASO II still doesn't really have any comparison on the Neo at least, so it's a little easier to forgive their flaws. Fuck, I even thought Cyber-Lip was pretty good until I played Metal Slug. And I agree about Magician Lord - it's wank. Had it been a SNES game, Super Play would've slated it.

I bought my first Neo back in '93, so I suppose that's fairly old-school.

Some of the older games I think are fun primarily due to the 'nostalgia factor' (like Magician Lord). Others I find still play really well today and the major improvements seem to be more on the graphics-side (KOF series).

I remember when the first KOF came out and it was the 'latest and greatest' game. :)

I'm sorry man, I gotta disagree. Super Turbo is leagues ahead of 95.

KOF98 is SNK's Super Turbo if you're looking for the game that is generally considered their "best" of all time.

Just my opinion though, like anyone elses really. :D

I am more of a New Neo player than anything else.

Nearly all the games i played are from the so called 'new' generation.I am more in to KOF 98,2000,Last Blade games,MOTW and many things after 1999 in general. But i also love the older shooters,if you can call them old, like Metal Slug,Samurai Shodown games,Puzzle and Sports games rock in the 'older' neo days,i just can't play older SNK fighters to be more precise.

Maybe i should give the older fighters another go,but my opinion sucks to yours i guess,i am very new to the Neo Geo :o

I'm as old-school as it gets when it comes to fighters, but '95 can't hold a candle to ST. Not with that unholy damage. It's got great atmosphere and a really good roster, but the damage problem just sinks it from being consistently played competitively.

KOF'98 is a much better comparison, since '98 and ST are both the fifth revisions of those games. They both offer a ton of depth and are endlessly playable.

FF, SS, AOF, KOF - there isn't a bad game in those series to me. KOF 95's music rules everything too. It has some of the best BGs too.

FFS, KOF 96, and FF3 are some incredibly fast games as well. I know how you could see games like those as being slow though, but it's all in 2p matches and both being very skilled players (not saying you aren't, but from the way you shun some of these games for being "slow" I can pretty much guess you didn't stick with them to see the innards of the game's engine).

about 96

all i'm saying is

CD
Hahah I reap alot with the simple shit in 96. Totally know where your coming from.
95 is a fucking masterpiece. For fucks sakes you can see candy cabs in the ng land bg..
Who cant like 95? Sure the damage was shit. It stands out though.

96 is where the slowdown showed.
I mean, throw a blitz ball.
97 got raped in the slowdown area. 98 is where it was perfected completely.

My fave Iori is a 95 Iori.
2K1 Iori is near damn perfect, but I appreciate 95 more, no cheesey easy midcancels and whatnot.
2K2, Iori plays like total shit compared to 2k1.

KOF 95 is a masterpiece.

BTW Epoch also did various statues of SNK chars..

Do not discredit 95 until you really give it a go. I dont mean days of play, I mean months of learning.
Take Iori and Kyo, and master them.
Not just those lame infinites either people. :D wink

I'm a fan of both styles.

I have a feeling some of it may be nostalgia, although in regards to fighters, at least, it's really not fair to judge how they play based on today's games - these newer titles are built on innovations first found with these earlier games.

Still, things like the original Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury 2, the original Samurai Shodown, etc. are all incredible games in my eyes, even today. I have no problem picking them up and enjoying them just as much as I did 10 or 11 years ago.

And then I can pop in a newer game, like Ninja Master's, any of the Real Bout series, or RotD and have just as much fun.

I can see how it might be hard to go back to the older titles, as you weren't around to see the innovation, and gradual progression of the series. But for those of us who were, there doesn't seem to be any problem playing these, even when compared to the more modern offerings found today.

If you witnessed the release of a game that was revolutionary for it's time, you will forever have that opinion of it in your mind. If you first witness the same game years after it was released, your opinion of it will be influenced by what has been released since. Most people can not appreciate what has come before if they were not there to witness the original release.

Neo games were WAY ahead of their time when they were released. Unless you can appreciate them on that level, you will never understand the love some people have for them and the system.

Oh well, I can't stand most of the Neo games released before FF2 (except League Bowling), but after it I like most of them and I can still enjoy playing them. I like both KoF 94 and 95. I fucking love FF3, best 1 player game out there. In my opinion the best games came out during 93-98, I don't really like most of the games after 98, like Garou, KoF 99, 2000, 2001, etc.
And take care that I started playing AoF in the arcades in 93 I think, but didn't like it, then loved FF2 and SS and so on. I first got the megadrive ports, FF1 (I loved it at that time, now I have the MVS and can't stand it), FF2 and SS, and then the ports on Saturn and PSX.
I was a big fan of SF2 from the very beginning, in fact is the game that made me into arcades and home consoles.

And by the way, SF2>KoF X, with X \in {94,\ldots,2002} make_fac
