I just recently got a NEOgeo (this week actually). I want to get a few games but only REALLY GOOD ONES. I'm gonna go for metal slug 3, but I wanna know if there is a really good shooter (like spaceship shooter, radiant silvergun style... i'm thinking that a neogeo shooter would be more like raiden...)

anyone know of a good shooter that I should chase down?

Viewpoint is probably the best shooterthemup on the Neo. Really hard game so it is worth the cash.

ASO2 is okay.

Last Resort was graphically ahead of it's time, but the gameplay is like shallow RType. Dont get me wrong, its a good good game.

Pulstar is boring (again, it is no RType 3, 2, or 1) but it is very nice looking.

Blaisng Star is mindless.

Viewpoint (classic)
Last Resort (R-Type lite it is but still a must own for any shmup fan)
Pulstar (IMO, the hardest shooter on the planet)
Blazing Star (must own as well. Pure eye candy)

I'd suggest Viewpoint. It controls much better than Blazing Star and Pulstar. BS and PStar have been sitting in my closet for a while because Viewpoint is overall more enjoyable, especially the music.

If you got the big bucks, then by all means Blazing Star. An absolute god-like shooter.

If you're looking for a Contra-type shooter go for Metal Slug 3. But, I dunno bout' airplane shooters, because I ain't a big fan of airplane shooting games, I jus' think they're all the same game.

I think that Airplane Shooters are the purest of the arcade experiences, cause of the simple gameplay that requires a lot of skill.
Space wars, the first videogame ever made, was a shooter glee !

Anyway... DE GUSTIBUS! angry

P.S. I'm a big fan of Metal Slug too!

Well, do yourself a fovor and oly get Pulstar if you are:

A) Looking for a big, memory intensive challenge

B) A big R-Type fan

Pulstar is my all time favorite shooter, but it really is an acquired taste.

If you want something akin to Radiant Silvergun, you aint gettin it on the Neo. Stay with the Saturn or Mame for those.

pulstar is not that hard.

Play it more people. I't easy to learn a strategy to play. An advice... don get too many "Speed Up's" or you will end with a ship so fast than you will die in those narrow passages of further levels.

In this games bullets are more or less slow so there's no need for a fucking fast ship. It's easier to avoid bullets with a ship a bit slower.

And the C (charge) power up's are VITAL!

BLAZING "Fookin" STAR The best Shump on the Neo:Geo no problem. Too bad it didn't get a sequel.

ASO II (Alpha Mission 2) is a worthy title. Granted, it's not as impressive graphically as Blazing Star and Pulstar, but it's an old game. It's a real challenge and a long game...staying powered up takes skill and the soundtrack is pretty fantastic too.

I think my fave is Pulstar, followed by Last Resort. Both are really cool games---with great music. Blazing Star is a little too cheesey to be No. 1; but it's still awesome.

ASO2 gets better the more you play it.
