Alright, Alright... call me thick but WHY is the Serial Number important??? Does it have some secret meaning?!?!?

PLEASE Help me out my fine friends and I'll buy you a drink if your ever in Manchester UK!!!... I's PROMISE!!!

It's all about video quality.

First of all it shows how old your system is. Older systems tend to have loose slots. Early models have sound drop outs in Fatal Fury 2.

Second of all it shows what revision the mobo is. Different revisions have different video output quality.

I have owned both high and low serial # AES's, here is my experience:

Low serial 14xxx = absolute god-awful composite, s-vid mod looks nice though, supposedly better RGB that high serials
High Serial 168xxx = composite is on par with low serial s-vid mod

Since you're in England, you can use RGB with your tv's so I guess a low serial would be desirable, but I have no experience with that.

Serial number is important to tell the age of a system, for example newer systems have serial numbers in the range 330000 ish.

Also certain revision serial number systems have better RGB output than others (don't ask me which ones - can't be arsed searching)

Hope that help :)

That is not true in all cases. Some early systems have the daughterboard fix. SNK was doing them in home, and some on the assembly line to fix the composite problem. I happen to have one with the daughterboard fix, and the composite looks just as good as one of my later model systems.

Interesting, at least they made an effort to fix the problem.

But still, SNK should be ashamed of themselves for releasing a $700 system with composite output as bad as mine. :)

As my page shows (see above for links) this is just not true. Granted your unit could be freakish (or your TV is, or your eyes are, or whatever) but the 30k US unit I tested had the daughterboard fix as well, and you can clearly see it's NOT as good as the later units.

well, which range of serial number is the s-video mod best applied to?
