We just got this over the weekend for DC. The graphics are poopi really, but what else is new. The music is HORRIBLE, is this just the DC version? The backgrounds suck ass big time, whatever happend to 99 style back drops? crying

But I like the character selection. They did kill Bao a bit, but the game is overall great.

What do yall think? Is there any difference between this one and the PS2 version? Or the NEO GEO version?

PS2 version is not out yet so i can't compare with it.
The DC version of 2k1' is a well done port aside from some rough and annoying sounds(whip). The sound in the neo version was smoother. As for the graphics, they are comparable. Not much of a difference.

I've always been shouting out loud how 2K1 sucked. Mediocre new characters, mediocre background, insufferable soundtrack, exceedingly ugly character selection screen and design... I have the AES in my collection but only played it maybe six or seven times...

I think KOF 2001 is a pretty good fighting game with a pretty good character selection, if you can forget about the hardcore porno music and the bland backgrounds.

I think that KOF 2001 is a very good fighting game but, the cheap music and background are the only low points. Everything else is pretty good.

*hugs Yung Burnout* (manly hug of course) wink

I agree about the BG's but I do not absolutely hate the music like most others. I will admit that it isn't the greatest though.

Oh well, nice to know that I'm not all by myself on this one :D

I also love KOF2k1. In fact I can't really fathom all of this "2k1 sucks" talk that seems to be the rage. But then again, at one point didn't people like 2k2? loco

I honestly can't understand everyone's problem with 2k1, its by far my favorite KoF and one of the best Neo games I've ever played. KoF 2k. Now thats a bad game.

Regarding KOF2K1 and KOF2K, I think it's just a matter of prsonnal taste. I always thought KOF2K is one of the best, because they improved the striker, Armour and Counter system from the 99. To me, it's just perfect whereas 2K1 just "has it."

But then again, in my city, most of the gamers will go 98, 2K2 and 2K1. But none of them will go for a 2K game. I think gamers expect a 120 Hits combo with three striker bombs, at least that's what I think...

the only game worth $300 on the world. it's what really hooked me to the NEO. (and yes, my best KOF and my best game on NEO-GEO)

hey Dizzy11523, try this:

take Iori to training mode try this easy combo. keep running till you push the other character forward. while running (keep holding forward), do this:

Strong Punch -> Weak Kick -> QCB Strong Punch X3

now, take Benimaru and just do the exact same steps except for the QCB Strong Punch which you have to do it once. when do it with Beni, he will do this kick move where he keep spinning on floor. While doing that, try doing his DM: QCF X2 Strong Punch. note that you will need 2 power stocks do this. in 2001, you can do endless numbers of such combos.

some say this makes things easier for newbies and they're beaten by them because of this. that's just a lie because in 2001, the damage is so low that it's impossible for someone to be beaten unless he ie the weaker.

hope you didn't judge the by grapihcs only. if you want me to teach you more combos, let me know

Way cool man! I'm gonna try that. I don't judge SNK by graphics, I know what to expect. I just wondered if all the version of 2k1 were the same.

I like 2k1, probably my 2nd favorite next to the DC dream match.

KOF 2001 is one of the best in the series imho. The gameplay is superb and that is what counts IMO.

Armor and Counter mode is the worst thing ever entered into KOF. For many players they´re not worth it, but if you know how to use them the word infinite gets a whole new meaning. Especially in KOF 2K, the paradise for scrubs.

The Supercancel on the other hand is one of the best additions ever.

The new characters brought some freshness in form of innovative gameplay. Take angel for example, or May Lee.

I think every KOF has enough to make it worth it. Especially when we are talking about ports.

Big up to all the 2001 fans.
Big hugs too.
Please read my review of 2001 its not great but I have been loving this game since it arrived. Agreed, the music I belive to be the only flaw to the best in the lot.
And the dc port is v v good, fantastic puzle mode for girlfriends etc.. and the graphics are comparably very good albet the DC stretch effect.

My only gripe with the KoF '01 is the backgrounds and some of the music and two aspects of gameplay. One being the low level of difficulty, way to easy to beat on level 8. Two, the supercanceling is a bit awkard. I mean, the timing on some supercancels are just too strict to perform. I know that in 3S you have to cancel after the first, but in this game you have to cancel at the moment the cancellable move connects. With some characters this is way too hard. But, I just go for old link combos instead.

I played a bit of 2001 today and i actually prefer it to 2002 at this moment. It has a classic feel for me.

The backgrounds are not that bad, some of them are actually very nice imho. The bad thing is that they don´t change between bouts.

I think 2001 is the most unique KOF in every way. The art style rocks (many will disagree) and compared to the art in KOF 02 it´s pure heaven. The art in 02 is stale, boring, unispired and just dull. A low-budget cartoon aimed at pre-teens, compare it to the "real" art i the manual. The art in 2001 on the other hand is exiting, fresh and unique. Some characters look pretty dull but i think it suits them. The lifebars and such looks great as well. Modern and stylish.

The ratio systems makes up for thousands and thousands of different combantions in teams. And there is more then billions of unique combos. You can play this game for years and still have tons to learn.

dredgulus > Keep practicing, most supercancels can be made with use of shortcuts or other simplified ways. The only few that i can think of that is hard to pull of is most dragonpunch moves and ralphs supercancel.

KOF 2001 stands as one of my favorite KOFs. Other are KOF 99 and 94.

I don't really like 2K1 because it's so scrub-abably messed up.

Just pick your favorite character with Robert, Leona, and Heidern as your strikers, and you'll be pulling out 70 hit combos.

There are some saving features...

Like Hinako's incredibly tedious slap, shin-kick combo... displaying that the combo meter maxes at 99... Ok, that's actually kind of cool, and a reason to play as Hinako, as it shows endurance, and you may get the opponent to just get up and walk away from the controller after waiting out the entire match.

But in the end, I just can't enjoy the game while the backgrounds and soundtrack hold it back so much. Sure - gameplay is king - but without a queen and a jack, you're 2 cards short of a winning hand.

cgun is right, the in game artwork and the promo stuff for 2001 is some of the finest to grace the neo. Although 2002 is of a high standard i is more main-stream in style. Despite the fact that I love the manual etc art for 94 to 98 the in game art was horribly out of proportion. 99 and 200 had nice pics but were very anime influenced, not a bad thing but not exactly new either. Go to
www.videogameimports.com
and buy some snk art books from them.
or dont its just a suggestion.
I did.

KoF '01 is my favorite in the series(haven't played '02). I love the character selection, k9999, and most of all the sped up gameplay. I actually don't mind the sound at all, simply because I have to listen to my roommate play '98, and all I have to say is AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Somebody needs to kill that fuckin' announcer....now!

I have not spent too many hours on this game. But I like the game play. It's over 2k2. I don't have MVS cart. Can't tell how the BGs look on RGB. Pitures look crappy on my TV. But i don't really care....

It's a nice game to have, just want to say that.

The two things I hate most about it is the art and the music. Other than that, the backgrounds... .oops, that's three things.

I liked the new characters, to be honest. I think 2002 takes everything that went wrong in 2001 and makes it a TON better. MUCH better backgrounds. MUCH better art and MUCH better music.

2001, when it first came out, I played a ton of. Now, It's back to 2002 and 98. annoyed

Spike > MUCH better backgrounds is a lie, really. They are on par imho, but it´s much better that they change every bout.
