Neo-Geo CD Systems...

Alright. By now you probably know I don't have a Neo CD system. I own a cartridge-based system. But I am on an information-gathering quest at the moment and I wanted to know if the CD system could play music CD's and movie CD's (not DVD's, I mean the CD movies)... and if they can play music CD's, is there a built-in light show when the music is playing? My Dreamcast doesn't have one! Its crazy! What the fuck is going on? My Jaguar CD has an incredible Virtual Light Machine show, and the Playstation has a decent program that plays when you use music discs. Even the 3DO had one too! So I wondered if the Neo CD system had its own as well. If so, is it cool?? I dunno why but I kinda want a CD Neo to go with my cart Neo. If the Neo CD system features a light program with music discs then I really might be interested in buying one. If not its not worth the cash since I already got the cart console. But man I was pissed as hell when my Dreamcast only showed a spinning red & white disc while playing music. I couldn't believe it didn't have a souped-up light show. But alas, the system is still worth the cash and I love it.

You can play music CD's on a Neo-Geo CD system but there is no light show. As far as I know, VCDs do not work on the system.

Yeah, NeoLord is right. Neo Geo cd certainly don't have MPEG 1 technology built in (unlike some cd-i machines). If you are looking for a game system that plays video cds, Just get a MPEG add ons for PS, Sat, or 3do.

Speaking of light shows...I really liked what 3do can do--the graphics, logo, and the shapes change depending on the sound of the music. And, this has nothing to do w/ light shows, but If I remember correctly, you basically get nothing on the screen for the Neo Geo cd. At least with CDZ, you can see the game title and screen when you load that particular Neo Geo cd game.

Neo CD is just too slow.......no mpeg decoding or something. Sigh.....
I almost got 3DO when it first came out but I back off....just too expensive. I think the price tag was $699 or $799, I forgot ....

Neo CD has no fancy lightshow.

For the DC, you can use a boot disc to get a cool light show, just in the same way that you can use a boot disc to get around the territory lockouts. I use the Utopia boot disc, which I played Guilty Gear X with recently, works perfectly and you don't need to mod your DC at all.

I don't have links for the DC light show boot disc, I'll look around. But for the Utopia boot CD, you just download the CD image (either Nero or Disc Juggler format, I use Nero) and burn it to a blank CD, voila you have a DC boot disc. Go to www.dccopyworld.com to find lots of cool utilities like that.

Oh, and I had a 3DO for one day back when it first came out. It may have a cool light show when playing audio CDs, but as for games, the system was a piece of shit. Its big strength was, ugh, FMV. Horrible stuff.

Master Terry Bogard is also right about the Neo CDZ's menu screen (which I mistakenly forgot to mention): games will appear in a small display window when one is placed into the CDZ's drive. This is a cool feature (for what its worth), and is a small extra. The Neo CD load times are too slow to be able to decode MPEG-1 video anyway.

First off... the 3DO. I played that machine at my good friends house a lot. Road Rash was the ultimate game on that system. It included musical scores from Soundgarden man!! Incredible. The 3DO light show was kinda weak IMO. But thats cause I have a Jaguar CD and the VLM in that is incredible! It will blow your mind even if you're sober. Next... I own a Playstation but not a Saturn... I wish I had a Saturn though, if only for Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2. The SF2 collection disc is nice as well. But anyway... I don't have the MPEG add-on so video CD's are not working on my PSX. But I have watched Batman Returns and Terminator 2 at my friends house on his 3DO. But if the Neo-Geo CDZ and the other CD system don't offer any light shows or MPEG capabilities then I guess I am not interested anymore. I am big on music. Very BIG on music. I love CD's. I love rock music. I love to listen to my old and new favorites and watch an incredible light show on my TV as I enjoy Surround sound. So... I guess the Neo CD is not worth it, ESPECIALLY when you have the Cartride system, of which I own 2, one in the box, unopened. So I am kinda set for now. My dad is a doctor, thats where the cash comes from... but I am 20 now and in college so my parents money doesn't reach me much anymore... but besides the sob story... I guess I will pass up the Neo CD offerings and stick with my Neo-Geo Gold system!! I heard the 3DO also had a Gold system. Whatever happened to the M2 3DO machine? It was more powerful than the 3DO right? Well I bought an Atari Jaguar at the time my best friend got a 3DO so we both played each others system to compare them. We both lost out big time as neither system survived for long. I kinda wish I had a 3DO for games like Hell, Road Rash, ... well thats really all. Well, they had Zelda also which was awesome and BETTER than the SNES and N64 versions... but 3 games can't justify the price of a 3DO IMO. And I did see the light show and it wasn't up to Jaguar standards. I love older systems, hence my love with the Neo. I also am big into Turbo-Grafx 16, SNES, and the Atari Jaguar. The Genesis was never my favorite, in fact I traded mine in at FuncoLand for a SNES system and Mortal Kombat 2 and Super Mario World. But I kept the TG 16 and Jaguar. Of course I kept the Neo, because it was the best system I owned. As for portables... damn I bought a Game Boy originally, then graduated to the Sega Game Gear, then the TurboExpress, and finally the Neo-Geo Pocket Color. My two faves are the TurboExpress and NGPC. I wish I bought an Atari Lynx because I am an old-school Atari fanatic who owned the 2600 and the Jaguar. Out of the new systems I got a Playstation and a Dreamcast. I didn't fall for the N64 as it remained cart based and I already had my share of cart systems. I didn't get a PS2 either cuz I already got a DVD player and I didn't enjoy my original Playstation all that much anyway... but I have different tastes than most game players... so... I guess thats it. Thanks for the info people...

only good game on 3DO is Japanese Policenaut by Konami. Other than that, lots crappy games. You should get a new Saturn from any import store for just $99 - $149, depend on what kinda system you are looking for (US moded, JPN White, or JPN Blue Saturn). Saturn is pretty cool system but lack of good 3D game (Panza Dragoon serie is just an exception)

yeah saturn is awsome! if you don't have much money you can go to like Kmart and other stores like that and get the games for a couple dollars. I recently bought a new saturn for $40 from a store near me called FYE

Wait a second Silent Scope... first off... I have a friend who found a Saturn (black US version) for $50. So why are they 99-149 dollars? Also... the Japanese versions come in white or blue? Awesome! I would definitely buy a white Saturn over the black US version. But... would my white Saturn only play Jap games? Is there a Sega territory lockout on the Saturn too? Also... Hell is a fun game if you play it for a while, lots of people can't even get past the first locked door but the password is OPEN SESAME. The game features Dennis Hopper and Stephanie Seymour (fucking beautiful Victoria's Secret model) in it. Road Rash is awesome if you liked the Genesis versions. Zelda is cool if you like long games. And I do like those games. Also there is a Madden football for it, and for all you Neo-Geo fanatics the 3DO has Samurai Shodown 2 on it!! For real! Its great, not up to the Neo-Geo standards but awesome nevertheless. And for SF2 fans there is Super SF2 Turbo as well and it is arcade-perfection!

You can purchase a 4-in-1 Action Replay cartridge to play US games on a Japanese
Saturn system and vice versa.

All of my cd-i, 3do, saturn, and PS system have MPEG 1 added on it (except cd-i, which was built in). I don't even know why. It's not like I watch Video Cds, or play enhanced games anymore. And 3do has those adult titles that can only be played with the MPEG add on. I have them all, but most suck.

BTW, white Saturn is limited, but not as rare as the skeleton or the V-Saturn (which I own). I got it moded. But it still needs a converter when playing US games. I think there isn't any way to get the system moded that can also play all US/Jap games w/out the need of converter (so basically, there is really no reason to get the system moded unless you want to play the back up games).

If you want to save some moeny, like Neolord said, get those 4 meg converters. For around $25 (last time I checked), you can play about 99% of the Japanese games except some titles like Lunar that needs those blasted MPEG upgrade.

If you are lucky enough then you'll still find US Saturn console for around $50. Two years ago I saw Target near my apt sell them for $40 each (brand new) and I supposed grab them all. I got brand new white saturn and thinking about getting blue skeleton one in the future coz it looks cool. Find a black skeleton if you can coz it's a rare item than blue ones. I got 4-in-1 convertor when Marvel vs. Capcom first came out coz it's stupid to swap 4 meg cart to regular convertor back and forth. Actually it damages my Capcom 4 meg cart coz I have problem using it now. If you don't like to get moded then install a switch on it. I don't recommend to use PSX or Saturn to watch VCD because you'll shorten your system life. I'd rather use my DVD players or computer to watch it. I don't even to use my PS 2 to watch DVD. Game only.
