I noticed in the Italy stage that in the background there is a billboard that says King of FIGHTERS 2002 FINAL. Is that a hint? Are they going to make a new series? Any word on this subject? Thanks!

I don't think they will stop now. Playmore didn't even make a single kof game yet. They just got it back from Eolith. Playmore has alot of money. Plus they will probably get alot more from the lawsuit against Aruze.

I say this much... if it IS the last one, what a way to go out. It may be the best one.

I'll be just as sad, if not more so, than any of you to see this series lay to rest, but it's going to end sometime. What a hell of a ride it's been so far, eh?

Rotfl.

That stage is for the last team match in the game.

King of Fighters is a tournament.

So the Italy stage is like the stage for the FINAL of the tournament, this year.

I think it's just that simple! :)

I agree. I'd think the same thing. However, Eolith did succeed in opening up a nice story arc to play off of for following KOF games. In a way, KOF2001 was a nice launchpad for KOF ideas.

However there is one thing that I'm almost certain of. If and when the next one comes out, I fully expect the game to make shocking new revisions to the fight system. If the pattern is correct, be prepared to see some unusual takes on how to modify the game. As usual some people will complain while others will welcome it. The KOF fan growing pain happened in 96 (I remember the shouts from the KOF95 fans on that one. Echoed like thunder.), and it happened again in 99, 2000, and 2001. (mainly because the fight-style revisions really sped up after the orochi incident).

I own 7 years of KOF on the Sega systems (8 once KOF2k2 releases), so if I get the urge to play something like KOF96, I'll actually pull it out and play it. I think of it this way, if I want to see the older stuff again, I'll actually play the older stuff. The one main thing I like about seeing the KOF series constantly evolve (for better or worse) is that they generally avoid making a previous year obsolete. The game still retains its individual charm and playstyle, and I don't see anything wrong with that. To me, it keeps the game value up and avoids turning KOF into a sports game. (Where you throw away the old version for a new one).

Anyway, it was my favorite series, and still is my favorite series. I play more KOF than any one other individual game or other game series I ever touched. And something about these changes keeps me coming back year after year to try things out and experiment some more. Follow up on the story, and see how my favorite old and new characters work out. And you know what, I could probably play the KOFs I already have for several more years alone, just honing skills for the plethora of characters it has.

But enough of that. Like I said, I'll be playing while I wait to see what happens. And when 2003 is announced, I'll be prepared for whatever interesting and odd changes they come up with. I know I can't imagine them yet, since I bet they want to introduce something not quite done in a 2D fighter before.

It will be VERY sad once KoF is layed to rest. The series was amazing and true old-school; something I won't forget.

I almost hope that 2k2 is the last, because i just CANNOT SEE the series get any better than this. From here, it could only go downhill. I also think that SNK/Playmore/Whoever the fuck owns KOF these days should end it on a dream match.

And it also makes it so i have fewer games to buy. which is good. since i'm gonna get the rest of the KOFs i don't have (94~96, 2k1), and then be done.

I hope they make KOF games until the end of time!!!
Therte is still room for improvement with the graphics, animation, gameplay, storyline AND introduction of some OLD familiar faces who should enter for the first and 2nd time.

I could not agree more Big Bear. I want the series to last as long as possible, I will never get tired of it.

If they end the series, I wouldn't want it to end this way...Yes, I would like to end it as a dream match, but, I would like a dream match with EVERYONE that has been in the series before, and a nice storyline that was specifically just for that dream match, which means ENDINGS.

I sure hope this isn't the end even if I don't play fighers much KOF is the greatest! If it is though, maybe they'll get back to making games for the 2nd Brigade Neo Heads with the neglected genres other than fightng.

I would like to see KOF at least hit the 10 year mark (KOF2004) prior to leaving the fighting game franchise.

The "FINAL" means final stage. I think that KOF will continue until the Garou storyline which takes place in, what, 2010? I'd love to see a teenage Gato or a Ryo/Takuma winpose with Marco as a white belt.

I agree 100%...
It was going downhill after '98 , until 2K2. I don't think there's anything that can be done after this.
I remember when '97 came out, and I found out that Orochi was the end boss. I thought "Damn, that has to be the last one then...". Then '98 came out : "Ok, it's a dream match. This is the last one then". Then '99 came out with the NEST story. I was like " What the hell is this story about now?"

Until KOF 2K2...

There is no way that the series will last until 2006... Meaning that 2002 will be the last dream match.
It's a pity that they couldn't fit more characters in... :( Like Eiji and Geese...

I want the series to continue until we get to see Terry with a new sprite re-draw. It should have happened by now. He's beginning to look VERY fucking dated. A little like Morrigan from CvS2, umm, no, no where near as bad as that actually but still...

I don't think I have enough faith in the pixel artists at Playmore though to look forward to that enough. Especially with the new Kyo and Iori win poses - something about them looks very sloppy and unprofessional to me. I'm pretty sure I could do better myself.

As for the new animations such as Yashiro, Vice and Kim, I'm pretty sure they've been around for a while archived on some CD somewhere from before the time that SNK closed it's doors.
