Kof 98 is the best.Don't ask,its just the best.Everything about it was cool. From the gameplay to the animation and down to the backgrounds.

If Kof 98 never existed,i would say Kof 96 is the best.
Bah!
All Kof games are good.

I have a tough time deciding wether it's KOF '97 or '98. I like '97's easier DMs/SDMs and it's storyline ( plus you get to fight Orochi at the end ), but on the other hand '98 has a lot of extra cool fighters in it ( Heidern, Saisyu, and more ).

I didn't play 2000 or 2001 yet, so I don't know about those...

I absolutely love kof 97 cause of its easier DM's and SDM's. And because it has almost all my favorite characters in it already. And my second favorite has to be 96 because it has the best music of any other kof and some of the most interesting bg's besides the ones in 98.

I agree 100%. KOF '96 has the best music...
I wonder what happened in '97, it went so bland compared to '96?

Yeah what happen 96 was so awesome then in 97. They lost their music creativity and the bg's werent as good as the one in 96. But still 97 is a great game no doubt about it.

Its difficult to pick a single 'best' KoF because the game has gone through several different 'systems', meaning different ways in which the power bar is used, types of moves that can be done, and the inclusion of strikers and wire attacks in later versions.

KoF98 represents the best 'all in one' KoF game because it basically combines all 4 previous games into one. All the characters and two different energy bar systems. However, it does not actually add anything new to the game.

KoF2001 is loved and loathed in equal measure because it changes a lot of the structure of the fights. You can pick how many fighters/strikers you have, throws do less damage than before, wire dammage allows for extra combos, and the striker attacks seem to have been toned down quite a bit.

I agree with everyone else about the music -'96 has the best tunes and 2001's score is terrible, but 2001 is still a really good game - its down to personal taste wether you like it more than '98.
98 is a more straightforward 1-on-1 fighter than later games. A lot of people were not too keen on the addition of strikers - though - to be honest they dont really make that much of a difference to fights unless you are looking into creating really long combos that use them.

Oh, and I almost forgot. After '98 the KoF games started using more moves that could be 'charged' (Like Yuri's fireball) or 'held' (Like Whips high/medium/low attack). There were a fiew 'hold' moves in previous KoF's but not as many as there are now.

My favorite 2 are 1996 and 1998. Still have yet to play 2000 or 2001. I really would like to though. I'm curious about both of them.

This is my take on it.

KOF 98 is a staple game because of its very tight controls and good over all ballance, not to mention the best graphics in the series imo. The Gameplay is legendary and there is no other 2D fighting game I've personaly enjoyed more. The characters are fun and many have alternate versions that play quite differently from the original...like the RB2 versions of the fatal fury gang.

2001 is my second favorite. Sure the character art, background, and music are not what we expect from such a high calabur series, but the gameplay more than exceeded my expectations. Gameplay wise I find it just as enjoyable as 98 and the addition of the advanced team edit is awesome (i.e. picking 1 to 4 characters and your health gain and supers are dependent on that). That and it has K9999, which is a total bad ass.

KoF99 is by far my favorite, I love the animation, style, characters, music, and the boss. Its just my all around favorite KoF, closely followed by KoF2001.

I have only played 2000 and 96, but 96 pwns it for free

96 just has great music, super presentation, good control, animations, backgrounds, intro, and I like the team in the background "cheering" for you. It just feels more like a tournament fighting game than 2000 does, which is how it should be.

I have the soundtrack for '97, but no game. The music is great though!

Oy Vey...not this thread again. I've said it once and I'll say it again 98 and 2K1 hands down. Looking though like 2K2 might beat those out.

Truthfully...I think every King of Fighters game is good in their own way. I really have enjoyed every single one for the most part. There have been things I disliked in each of the games, but at the end of the day I still like them all.

I'd have to say KOF99 is mah fav, simply because of it's gameplay...I'm more of a gameplay person..If the old famicom game "Kung-Fu" had gameplay similar to that of 99 i'd still be playing it..I'm not to big on "Graphix" or backgrounds...It helps but it doesn't really hurt it too muchin my book..Hell i'd play 99 with only sprites and HP..Well I think ya see what i'm sayin.

Personally, 95, and 98 were my favorite years.. 98 had the right combination of characters and so many choices in characters/alternates, like/dislike system, and the characters were all so powerful with so many moves. I can't see what people liked so much about 96'..that one seemed rushed with the background sharing, bad music on some stages, characters missings moves, and the bad AI. Master team and storyline were the only strongpoint to it.
