women and the neo geo

In the recent months that I have gotten back into neo geo, I have noticed that my tastes have gotten more and more expensive, and like most neo owners, there are some carts out there that I don't mind spending hundreds of dollars on. Now trying to explain my expensive tastes to my fiance is a different story. After we get married, I feel I might have one helluva time trying to justify my hobby to her, and why neo games sometimes cost hundreds of dollars when the games at Wal Mart cost fifty bucks. Aside from this, I have to wonder if I might ever be able to get her interested in neo geo, if there is a snowballs chance in hell she might ever be as into it as I am, or at least interested in it. She appears to want to at least learn about it, so I have some questions I will pose to you neophytes and if you have suggestions or advice, please advise...
What game or games would be best to get her hooked on the neo (I hear Waku Waku 7 is pretty popular with the ladies)?
Is there any game I might ought to avoid while on this quest to enlighten her?
What neo games should no gamer/collector be without (I ask this so I might be able to better gage how much money I might ultimately end up spending)?
Any suggestions are appreciated, from both male and female members of this forum. Thanks.

I think the most important thing is that she goes into it with her eyes open. If she doesn't, you taking the chance that she won't approve later.

Look at it this way...
A) You need to be able to pay the bills, etc BEFORE the hobby
B) You need to save an amount of money that you are both comfortable with
C) You BOTH need to be able to afford luxury things you enjoy (yours being Neo)

If all this is met, she shouldn't mind what you do with your $$. That's your call. The question will be how far your fun dollars stretch. If it's 1 cart per month, per 2 months, etc. You also have to leave yourself open enough to take advantage of things like this last NCS offer, where you are able to grab lots of carts at the same time at a good price.

One things's for certain. If any of the above aren't met (can't pay the bills, can't save any $, or ALL the luxury $ go your way), she'll have a right to be pissed.

Where I've personally found is that my wife likes to spend her extra $ on clothes, furniture, etc (stuff I consider basic needs). I'm like a kid... games, hockey season tickets, etc.

Most female like to play puzzle games like tetris or somethin. Try find alot of puzzle games. I heard they play better than the guys. Bomber Man might be a good one!

My girlfriend loves Money Puzzle Exchanger, Magical Drop 2 & 3, League Bowling, & Joy Joy Kid. She plays those a lot more than I do. She's also good at them, so we have fun playing competetive. However, she hates fighters/action/beatem ups. She wont even watch me play them anymore.

If you can pay the bills, eat, and still have money to buy games then her griping would be unsubstantiated. Tell you what, go into the closet and add up the dollar amounts of all the pairs of shoes she has. Multiply that by the amount of money spent on all the clothes she bought but doesn't wear. Then factor in the percentage of money she will spend in five years on makeup alone. After that, spending a couple hundred on a Neo game every now and then won't seem so ridiculous.

Magical Drops are the ultimate chick games! Well, they do seem to be quite popular with women, along with most other puzzle games. What I would recommend, both for you as well as her, are the older titles that support two-player simultaneous action like Burning Fight, Crossed Swords, Sengoku 1 & 2, Nam 1975 etc. In short, games where both of you take an active role, and where both of you stand to enjoy yourselves in games where the learning curve is not necessarily too high. If you have an MVS, I would recommend these games:

Sports games are hit or miss if you ask me and to be on the safe side, avoid KoF, the bloody Samurai series, the Real Bout games .....any serious fighter. Just keep her as involved as you, without requiring 3 years of previous experience.

I agree. My girlfriend plays magical Drop 3 and some puzzle games, but that's it.

My gfriend likes Puzzle Bobble, Magical Drop and Samurai Shodown series. She cant play Sam SHodwon, she just bashes the buttons etc., but there is something in that game that keeps her amused. Dunno what.

Neo Bomberman, I am going to have to disagree with you on the whole "avoid KOF" thing. I have successfully turned my girlfriend into a KOF fan. She has R-2 for her pocket.

What got my wife hooked on 1 on 1 fighting after never even being interested in fighting games before was, N64 Smash Brothers... from there she became a KOF, and SS fan.

I agree with all of you. Magical Drop is a sound choice, along with Bust a Move, and League Bowling.

King of Fighters isn't completely dissed by ALL females, though. A girlfriend of one of my friends actually plays KoF '98 on DC using Leona. Kicks my friend's ass every time.

Just wondering: where did all of you meet your girlfriends? Hardcore video game geeks are not the type of people you normally see with girlfriends..

I dunno man. I don't know many women/girls who would be able to justify the outrageous spending that Neo users do. Sure I've met that girl who blows $300 on cocaine, but hell has to freeze over before she'll ever let me spend that kind of cash on a video game! I dunno. Its confusing, but my girlfriend really loves my Sega Dreamcast. She doesn't dig the Neo, or Jaguar, or SNES, or anything else but she loves the DC. She likes Sonic Adventure and Rayman 2. I dunno... she digs those 3D adventure type games. Since the Neo doesn't sport those I can't get her into it. She hates House of the Dead 2 (even though I got a lightgun for her) she won't play it. So naturally, fighting games don't fly with her either...

hmmm. Playstation players aren't always geeks. I have long blonde hair and do drugs so i'm not always playing video games. But... I have never stored my games at another person's home. games are far too important to me to do that sort of thing. Its just my girlfriend would rather smoke a joint and see a movie instead of getting her butt kicked at games. I would rather see a Manson concert than play KOF... but besides concerts and drugs video games are my favorite thing to do. Its hard to compare KOF and cocaine though... if u know what i mean

Maybe, instead of getting her hooked on the big NEO, try getting her hooked on the little one. Cotton, Puzzle Link, Bust a Move, and the Magical Drop series get em hooked every time. Try it!

My roommate's girlfriend love's Bust-a-Move, in fact I think she now plays my MVS more than I do. Personally, I don't think I've ever had a girlfriend turn into a girlfiend over video games (in fact, none of them have ever realized that I'm 'that' into them). So I guess that's the trick: balance. that and I make sure those lucky females who become my girlfriend aren't so insecure that anything that I spend time with, animate or inanimate, will be viewed as a threat in their mind. If that fateful day EVER happened I would ditch the bitch in a second. (conversely, I have no problem with the extremely passionate salsa dancing that my current girlfriend is taking -even though it not only involved her time, but it involved her time doing acrobatics around other men...she saves the fun aerobics for me ;-)

Looking at one of the other replies, I can't say pot or coke are on my list of 'fun things to do with my girlfriend'... Maybe I'm just a right-wing-nazi on that one :-)

Hell... I shouldn't have gone so overboard and listed my drug using on this board. I like marijuana and cocaine, and I trip LSD occassionally, luckily my girlfriend likes pot so we share it when we're together. But I am not advocating drug use. Drugs are bad for some people. Some people lose control with them. This is a video game board, and I shouldn't talk drugs here. I'm sorry...

As far as drug use goes, nope, this probably isn't the place to discuss it.

Personally, I'm only a social drinker, if at all, I don't use drugs, and I smoke socially or when I'm feeling bummed out.

Balance is the key. It's just when the temperatures hit sub-zero proportions and the nearest town of larger than 3,000 is within at least a 30 mile radius away, it's real easy to shut yourself in, especially when there are so many good RPGs out there (Ie, FFIX, Lunar II, Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, Harvest Moon:BtN, Phantasy Star Online). If you live in the land of eternal summer that is CA, consider yourselves lucky.
