i got the sept 02 issue to do i could see the little metal slug preview (how come it was only a preview?)

but something royally pissed me off in that issue.

the NetPro feature.

WHAT THE FUCK WAS Dunjin Master ON WHEN HE WROTE THAT SHIT?

that is the shittiest article i ever read. why?

NO MENTION OF DREAMCAST, WHAT SO EVER.

if it wasnt for dreamcast none of these console would even think about online plans.

"Welcome to online gaming console fans!"
what a crock of shit.

dreamcast has been doing it since 99. hell, 98 if you count the online options in sonic adventure.

it acts like sony invented online gaming.

i dunno, but that really pissed me off.

i hate how everyone writes off dreamcast as not being 'real' like it didnt 'really' go online. what kind of shit is that?

sorry

I thought it was cool to have a small preview of Metal Slug...even though it was a bit late.
I agree with Sonic though. It's a bunch of bullshit that Sony and M$ act like they were the fucking innovators of online gaming when DC started it all.

Actually the Saturn was online with the Netlink way before the DC, and before that the Genny and SNES had Xband, and Sega had a modem adapter for the Mega Drive in Japan long ago. But Sega is the true innovator of console online games. Hell they are the innovators of all the cool Console technologies :)
Sega Forever.... SNK also :)

things like this happens to sony too ............. I feel that every mag and site avoid talking about Sony while trying to make the X box something big ........... no body talked or wrote about Sony in the last E3 while it had a 10 times better show than the others

I don't mean that it happened only at E3 but it happens all the time (......the same thing 4 DC)

It sorta is a first experience for the majority of the gamers. Out of the few people who got a DC not everyone got online. Hell Online gaming seemed like a gimmick then since the DC was the only one with the option. Of course no one is going to care.

gimmick? gimmick my ass!

sure, xband and netlink were. even chu chu rocket was.

but oh hell no.

you arent going to sit there and call quake 3, unreal touranment (6 players bish), pso, bomberman online gimmiks.

they were real online games. why cant anyone accept this.

and as far as sony getting a bad rap, my ass. why?
its been over 3 years and there still hasnt been one online game, yet they had plans since launch.
but NO ONE CARES. "ooh they're sony its ok. we love them. they can do no wrong."

bah.

i dont hate the mainstream, i hate how ignorant they are. dremcast STILL deserves recognition.

not to mention 10 player netlink bomberman rules on saturn.

Um Alpha 3 doesn't support online play, at least not in this country it doesn't...

Play a few hundred hours of Phantasy Star Online 1 or 2, and tell me the DC online feature was just a gimmick.

The first online console (besides PC's) in the US was the Genesis/Snes Xband. Those were far from gimmicks, because they worked, and I played them myself back in the day.

Next we have Sega Saturn Netlink, far from gimmick, it may only have 5 games, but one is Virtual On, and you get 2 people with twinsticks, and a local phone line, and you're gonna have a helluva good time.

Next we have Dreamcast, after countless hours of AFO, Bomberman and PSO, it sure as hell was as real as you can get.

PS2 getting online with a PSO clone, 2 fucking years after it comes out in Japan is nothing special, he'll even Xbox will beat that POS online in America, which is SAD.

Um Alpha 3 doesn't support online play, at least not in this country it doesn't...

If you could get a KDDI account, you could play it in any country, because AFAIK it was an internet server, you still used you're own ISP, it wasn't a dial in server.

I agree with Sonic here. The Sega had online down years ago, and now finally, after nearly two years of f*cking around Sony finally starts to get something going, and people think it's some find of revelation. What a crock.

I miss not having Gamefan around. Now THAT was the best mag for hardcore gamers. You could always count on seeing coverage for the non-mainstream systems in that mag, especially in it's earlier days when the Neo actually got some reviews and previews on a regular basis. Gamers Republic was also pretty good (founded by Dave Halverson the original founder of Gamefan and his new crappy mag, Play).

Sadly, today we are forced to read through mags that cater mainly to the mainstream kiddie gamers (ie: Gamepro, EGM) and the alternative mags like PLAY have WAY too much anime and useless coverage in them to be considered a true gamer's mag. Gamefan (and Gamer's Republic) seemed to have the right balance between mainstream and the obscure and for that, I really liked them.

Hmm... Yes, Dreamcast requires some recognition, since it actually shipped with a built-in modem to begin with!

(Say, anyone know how I can get a broadband adapter? Thanks.)

Although not fully online gaming, but there was a system here locally called the "NABU" system. It was kinda a computer/console mix. It came out in the 80's and would download software via a cable link and had stuff like newsletters, etc. I would wager that it was some sort of Colecovision clone. I spent wayyy too much time on that thing. :p

Nope, you have to go waaaaay back for the first console with (sort of) online capabilities:

"Q: What was Gameline and what games were available for it?

A: Gameline was a service offered by Control Video Corporation that admitted
the downloading of games to the the 2600 over regular phone lines. The
Gameline used a variable 800-2000 baud modem, according to Kevin Horton's
no-longer-there Gameline Page. The Gameline Master Module originally sold
for $49.95 and there was a one-time membership fee of $15. Charges were
about $.10 a game or $1 for up to an hour of play. Contest games were $1 and
there was a $.50 charge to enter a score. On your birthday, not only were
you given free play for a day, but you also received a Happy Birthday
screen, complete with cake, candles and music."

taken from the 2600 Faq at Gamefaqs. Control Video Corporation went on to become AOL - strange but true.

Yea I think Mouse Master had that, I remember him saying he used to run a BBS off that Atari 2600 and trade games and stuff.

They diden't even give props to game.com! The bastards!

To clear some things up. SFA3 is difficult to get it online, but possible. In japan the DC was not shipped with a modem (I had to buy one for mine I know). DC was the first system to initally have Broadband games (Yes you can play any game with a BB but these games utilized it). If Dreamcast was a online gimmic, then why are 2 of the "current" nex-gen systems getting PSO, one of the most popular online games. Also in props for the DC how many games got "ported" to other systems that are now doing great? Just because people are morons and diden't get a DC dosen't mean that SEGA dosen't know that their games are the SHIT!

Like I said ............ gamespot.com didn't mention anything about KOF 2000/2001 for DC and PS2 when playmore annouced them with SNK vs Capcom for NG and Metal Slug for GBA

from gamespot.com :

(Playmore officially announces development for the Game Boy Advance.

Playmore has updated its official site with a list of its upcoming games. The list includes Metal Slug Survival Missions for the Game Boy Advance and SNK vs. Capcom for the NeoGeo. Unfortunately, there aren't any details on what Playmore has planned for both games, but we'll keep you posted.
Official release dates for both games have yet to be announced. )

(if they were for X Box ............   )

Wow. The article is intended as a primer for people just now getting into console online gaming--and there are many of them. We have done big articles on the past about Dreamcast gaming--not to mention NetLink for Saturn. I know because I wrote or edited them--please see December 1997 for a two-page article NetLink/Saturn, then August 2000 and October 2000 for a four-page two-parter on Dreamcast online. When they were the hot topics, we did just as much coverage.

But since neither Dreamcast nor Saturn had the install base that the PS2 has--it's no disrespect to Sega, it's just a simple fact that more people are going to try console online gaming for the first time with this current crop of systems. That's nothing against the Dreamcast, which I regularly defend for blazing the trail and doing a lot of things right (I still think it bowed out early because of Tom Kalinske's mistakes in the early 90s, which burned through too much consumer confidence in Sega--the machine itself was and is excellent, but it was saddled with the sins of the father). But that article you're referring to is not a history of online console gaming--it's a guide to getting started TODAY, fresh.

You're approaching it like a holy war; we're approaching it like a current event.
