Just a quick question for the super-knowledgable Neo fan....how many Mahjong controllers were made? Does anyone have a confirmed exact number? Really close guestimate? A clue?

Any info would be appreciated, thanks much,

I honestly have no fcking clue, lol. But to take a guess I'd say less than 500.

For all I know it could be 50 though.

Ahhh come on, someone has to know for sure! Since I first got on neo-geo.com I have been *seriously* impressed with the amount of collective knowledge that is displayed in the forums. So, the info is out there...gotta be!

In any case, I am greatful for guesstimates too! 250-500 eh? Anyone think more were made? Less? Chime in!

Actually only 19 were made and they were given away as prizes at the first and only SNK mahjong tourneyment in Osaka back in 1991.

1. You own one
2. I own one
3. shawn has one
4. shawn has another one.

Only 15 others are out there!

Shawn owns 3 at the moment, one for his personal collection, two for the store.

Definitely more than 19 out there, unless the same one's keep getting bought and sold on a regular basis.

Id be willing to bet several thousand were made & sold in japan where people actually play these mahjong games. Much like the mahjong games, I doubt snk ever marketed them toward overseas customers.
The real reason there are so few selling in
the english speaking neo scene, Is because there are very few who even want it.

mahjong.jpg

Has a total of 21 buttons. I remember that the last mahjong controller Super Sellers of Japan had sold for $1000.

It would seem that this last analysis is most likely correct. Since there were quite a few mahjong games released for the japanese AES, it seems rather likely that the controller that was made for the games must have been widely available at some point to the public that was buying the games. Also, im just assuming that neo geo was fairly popular in Japan in the 90's when these games/controls were being released. Also, do you need this controller to play the mahjong games?

I disagree...

It is more than likely that the mahjong controller had only one production run back in 1990-91, and at that time less than 10000 neo geo units produced for the Japanese market (my best guess judging from the serial numbers on the systems and the games displayed on the box). Anyway, it was probably a marketing experiement and probably sold for quite a bit initially, so it was just an expensive and uncommon accessory much like the NES robot.
Also, The fact that supersellers was charging an ungodly $1000 for one leads me to believe that they are not as common in Japan as some might be led to believe. I imagine that the total production was less than 500.

I disagree again. As many have learned from wanting MVS cart boxes, just the cost of the mold for such unique controller would be very prohibitive at sub 1000 runs in manufacturing. Snk has proven they are very much into cost effectiveness. In the early days they even used the same carts for Japanese sales as the did US. With just a cheap sticker slapped onto the old one.
I very seriously doubt SNK would have made a contoller that was so completly ready for retail in such very limited #'s.

As for Shinchiro & supersellers, They also sold black cart conversion for up to 800-1000.
The same converted games that were once explained as rare protos. That now everyone knows they can have converted from MVS for cheap. I believe this controller will only remain rare until all the hardcore pay through the roof. Then once that trickles out, hundreds more will start showing up at better prices. Pretty much like everything else neo has done.
Shoot, 2 years ago SS3US was super duper rare. Till hundreds showed up thorugh NGF & NCS. Now I see it for sale more than many common titles.

Well, from what I gather, the Neo mahjong controller wasnt like a DC fishing rod or anything. They didn't crank them out and send them off to retailers enmasse. I thought that they made a super limited number...and then axed the whole idea before even marketing them. I dunno. I think the fact that you see them for sale sooooo rarely tells us that there aren't toooo many of them out there. I suppose there could be 2000 of them, and maybe 1500 are held by uber-collectors...but it seems pretty unlikely. Anyway, its cool that we have all kinds of input in this thread. Its exactly what I was looking for!

It seems we have a 250-500 camp...and a "maybe 1000s" camp...whos right?
wink.gif
When is the guy who worked at SNK japan gonna drop by and tell us the exact number made? (wouldnt that rock!) Speaking of which...how hard is it to contact SNK in japan and get a real response to such a question? Whats their email? anyone know?

R&D would cost to damn much just to make a couple of Mahjong controllers. Even if the controller is several years old, R&D would cost thousands just to produce it.

Now that I think about it, both of you have good points.

They could of produced a very limited run to test the controller but there wasn't enough interest so mass production never went into effect (this happens all the time in the industry).

Maybe mass production did start but SNK was left with a large surplus and had to destroy must of the run (Virtual on Sticks!!!)

Maybe SNK is actually owned by aliens and this device is an craneal-mind vortex generator which releases subliminal messages that tell the fucking idiot whome actually pays for this piece of molded plastic CRAP to buy more useless shit like an american version of KING of FUCKERS 2000 which is actually an anal probe (explains way to much, especially why NGF has a huge back stock of american KOF2000)

I also say SNK made a couple thousand of them. If anything these must have been over-produced, for like anything else SNK made after having over-anticipated the demand, these things were eventually sold off new, or used, with great discounts. Even into the mid 90's one could get a used one for peanuts (less than what a typical joystick now goes for).

Don't bother with what Super Sellers charges. I saw the controllers at a couple other shops in Japan that wouldn't ship overseas, and for $1000 theoretically one could have had 20~30 of them, as long as the order could have be filled.

Pornographical mahjong games seem a staple of the gaming industry in Japan and while there is only truly one adult hentai mj game on the Neo (CD; Final Romance 2), the others are all themed around the same subject. Minasan is kind of an exception.
