The X-Box did have titles out, but they were just the games all felt like PS2 clones (the EA titles) or PC clones (duh). I didn't feel the same level of wow as I did with the Gamecube, even though the gamecube had fewer titles. Admittedly, the gamecube's graphics looked like a souped up N64, but there's no surprise there. Luigi's Mansion and Starfox both looked really nice. My pics didn't do them justice.
Microsoft had set up a big theater for a presentation, but I've learned to be skeptical of things I can't actually touch at a game show. I think its possible that something big may be on the horizon with ms, but I don't think their openning will match the Gamecube.
Even comparing the literature for the two, Nintendo just comes off like they know more about what their doing. Everything from the controllers, games, system, add-ons were all mapped out and described beatifully. The actual on-site displays were magnificent. The pictures practically took themselves.
The X-Box literature was basically a boast about processing speed (like that helped the old SMS vs the NES), and then a bunch of screenshots to games (most of which could have been lifted from other consoles). If X-Box succeeds, I think it will be at the expense of the PS2. (the X-Box is also physically HUGE in comparison to the other two). The gamecube was about the size of three X-Box controllers stacked (hence the gamecube has a
handle in the back for easy transport). The presentation onsite was decent. It looked good and powerful (not the disorganized mess Sony felt like this year), but it was missing a few noticable elements that signal "I've got my act together." Example: I had to use my flash to get a picture of the actual X-Box. The display was sort of tacked on, unlit, and in a shadow. You could barely see it and there was awful glare coming off the top. Microsoft also had a lot more secretive "retailer only" areas. Guess the monopoly company is back to its old business <IMG SRC="smilies/smirk.gif" border="0">
Nintendo's a pro at presentation, no doubt (although microsoft has been to its fair share of E3s). And in this business you NEED to win in the media war, and on opening day (the E3), Nintendo won hands down.
