Remembering about the earlier thread about Samurai Shodown II being mentioned in the Warcraft III manual, and later reading someone say to check the names of the blademasters, I noticed that this particular blademaster was named Jubei (ring a bell?)... Take a look.

I've also had the names Hanzo and Ukyo pop up in WC3 games. I'm sure there are more as the blizzard guys do have a mvs cab with ss2 in it in their offices.

I've noticed several other names similar to Samurai Shodown ones... Like "Genjuros" or something like that... Also saw a Haohmoruh (spelling?) one, I think...

I'm a real Samurai/martial arts history buff so here goes/

Many of the Samurai Showdown characters are based on real people. Haohmaru for example is supposed to be Miyamoto Musashi the famous samurai warrior probably the greatest ever in japan. He is the founder of Nito Ryu and wrote the Book of Five Rings. A great book about is life was written by Eiji Yoshikawa in the 30's called Musashi. It's like an epic sort of like a japanese king arthur but more realistic.

Caffeine Nicotine is based on Takuan Soho the Buddhist Monk who educated Musashi and helped to cultivate his mind from a"wild animal to a true human being" Takuan was well respected in the 1600's of the Tokugawa era. He advised both the Shogun and the Emperor. He wrote many books on statesmenship as well as martial arts. I have several of his books.

Yagyu Jubei was a real man. His family the Yagyu were famous swordsmen. They founded the Shinkage ryu. The yagyu family taught several generations of Shoguns swordsmanship. Yagyu Menanori being the first. Musashi was famous for fighting w/ 2 swords not the Yagyu. I always though Haomaru should have 2 swords while Jubei one oh well.

Hattori Hanzo was also a real Ninja. One of the heads of the Iga clan. Sonny Chiba the Japanese action star played Hanzo as well as Jubei in several movies.

Finally Amakusa Shio was also a real man. He was a christian daiymo. Many other daiymos feared that christianity would take control of the country and then the gaijin would come. They assaulted his stronghold and killed all of his people. Christians were all forced to convert or be killed during the 1600s. There's a chapter in the Lone Wolf and Cub Manga as well as a whole season of Rhuroni Kenshin the anime.

Anyway just sharing some info. The Amakusa info may be a bit off. Also my romanji spelling could be wrong as well.

Have you noticed that in the anime Ninja Scroll there are a lot of characters that are similar to the Samurai Shodown 2 ones, both in look and weapons? Maybe it's because they are also based in real people.

I believe Tachibana is loosly based on the real life Samurai Sasaki Kojiro. A young, confident samurai who had developed the Tsubame-Gaeshi technique, or "Swallow Counter" (note Ukyo's Tsubame Gaeshi or "Swallow Swoop" slice). Mushashi and Kojiro dueled on the island of Ganryu in 1612, Kojiro was easily disposed of. Notice the rivalry between Haohmaru and Ukyo in Shodown one and their common stage, Ganryu Isle.

Several other characters, such as Wan-Fu and Kyoshiro Senryo, also have historical references.

That, my friends, is why Samurai Shodown is the greatest video game series ever made.

By the way, many developers that worked on Samurai Shodown also had a hand in creating Ninja Scroll, hence the similarities.
