Hey, as long as you didn't create the virus yourself who can blame you? And thanks for the heads up. <IMG SRC="smilies/cool.gif" border="0">

No point in hating or banning someone who didn't mean any harm. Accidents happen . . .

Too many damn viruses floating around, I just had to deal with 7 computers that had the sircam virus on them yesterday. I am getting really tired of all these damn things. But as long as it is done with no harm intended then it is all ok in my book.

Yeah, SirCam virus has been a real hassle at my company lately. 6 of about 50 computers were infected (one twice!), I disinfected them all. Pretty easy to kill, just edit a few registry entries, delete a few files, and scan the systems. Still a hassle, I had to send TWO virus warnings to all staff, and the second warning was VERY harsh. A few of them apparently didn't pay attention to my first warning, so I laid down a new rule: anyone previously warned, who becomes infected, gets their system quarantined for minimum 24 hours. No internet, no email, no network printing. Off the network. That should straighten them out . . . <IMG SRC="smilies/eek2.gif" border="0">

I'm not calling you a liar (well maybe I am), but there is no way a virus can "Infect" an HTML file, did it upload it to your server too? You obviously thought no one here knows anything about HTML to make a statement as silly as that.

An HTML file is not an executible, there is no way a virus COULD infect it. To put a virus in an HTML file you would have to change the code to LINK to a virus thats uploaded somewhere on the net, there is no way to attatch a virus to an HTML file...

Seeing as this is coming from you, one of the ON.com trolls that used to post all that trash in the war room, I wouldn't be surprised if you did it.

So saying the boogie man put it in your HTML is an out right lie, a person did it, don't blame the virus on this one....

Thanks for the tip SamuraiX. I'm hoping that we have no future infections at my company, especially after my last nasty email warning to all staff. I used huge red letters, and added a nice fat slap on the wrist if they ignore my warnings about specific viruses in the future.

Also, for selected machines, I installed SurfinGuard Pro. Its a free d/l from:
www.finjan.com

and the program protects agains malicious programs or viruses that might attempt to make unapproved changes to you system registry, etc.

For the higher level people in my organization, I'm taking no chances; trying to protect their PCs in every way possible!

Actually Drift King EX, you're wrong on this one. Check the description at McAfee:
http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99080&

And the first few lines:

This Visual Basic Script virus will append itself to files, delete files, and can spread via embedded VBScript, contained in the body of HTML formatted email messages.
When the script is permitted to run, the virus inserts itself at the end of .ASP, .HTM, .HTML, .HTT, and .VBS files. If the current day plus the current month is equal to 13, the virus attempts to delete .DLL and .EXE files on local and network drives.

Its a Visual Basic Script (VBS) virus that can transmit itself by infecting HTML files. The easy answer to these is to disable Windows Scripting Host on your PC, thereby removing the means of any VBS virus from spreading. To do this:

start, settings, control panel, add/remove progs, windows setup, accessories, uncheck Windows Scripting Host, and apply. Voila, no more worries from VBS viruses . . .

I'm running a Norton Anti Virus 2000 with the lastest definitions and I did a search for this VBS.Haptime and I got found two of them in my Virus List (VBS.Haptime.A@mm / VBS.Haptime.B@mm), does this mean that I'm protected??? Or do I have to download that NOD32 thing (the Trial Version)???

btw - This virus isn't like a trojan is it??? (meaning my computer can't be accessed by someone else)

Not sure about Norton, but the virus is completely described here:
http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99080&

To find out about your level of protection, just go to www.symantec.com and look up the virus there, the description will tell you what level of program you need to be at to be safeguarded from HapTime.

BTW if you're at the latest Norton program version and definitions, you should be protected. Still, programs like SurfinGuard Pro and ZoneAlarm give you additional protection, over and above any single antivirus program . . .

Well I've got The Cleaner, Norton 2000 and Zone Alarm. I think that should cover it. Thanks for the warning / advise
