You're about to read my new review for Metal Slug 3. It's been sent to Bobak, but he didnt get it yet. Ok, here you go, but I warn you, its not normal. It's in essay form.
(Most likley full of grammar 'n' spellin errors.)

Metal Slug 3

Wow, what most call the greatest Neo-Geo game ever. What some call the greatest action/adventure game ever. What few call.. possibly the greatest game ever. I don't know how many hours I spent thinking about getting Metal Slug 3 and playing it for endless days. I strived for that game. Then the re-release everyone was so happy! We were ALL getting Metal Slug 3. Then I got the game, and popped it in.

Let me say that I am a HUGE fan of Metal Slug. I have played it for years and enjoyed all of it, all the time. It had a military feeling, that existed completley in Metal Slug 1. I think the huge fans of this game go into the mind that the military feeling WAS Metal Slug. Perhaps if the aliens and robots ect. were introduced to us in 1996, maybe we would expect all of those things. But I don't know, but I can say that I wasn't pleased with MS3.

In my mind, when I see Metal Slug, I see busting through a forest of armored guns, and soldiers firing at me. I cannot invision Man-Eating Plants, Aliens, Zombies ect. This was what I feared Metal Slug would become. When I first started Metal Slug 3, I expected a soldier, or one of those middle eastern fellows from MS2, but what? Crabs? Giant Crabs. That pissed me off. Visually, this game is eye-candy, I mean, this it THE BEST on the Neo-Geo. It's excellent. So are the controls, and so is the sound. But I always have fun-factor. This game is SO not fun, it hurts when I play it. It's very hard, and I can't have any fun when I keep dying. I have no time to enjoy the backgrounds or anything around me.

I sadly can say that I view this is a waste of my hard-earned $300, which could have gone towards Neo-Geo games that I KNEW I love. After about a week, I tired very quickly of Metal Slug 3. Sure, I picked it up on a rainy day, but it never kept my interest for at least twenty minutes. If I had Metal Slug 1, or 2? I would most likley be playing it now. What my point is, is that if you have Metal Slug as Soldiers, tanks, and heavy guns, that this isn't your game. If you can transform that original idea into aliens, robots, and man-eating plants and other crazy stuff, go ahead. For myself, this is not Metal Slug.

Hey, you gave your opinion and if you can stand behind them with deepest convictions, I have no problem with that.
Controversial eh?

I'll say...

*raises glass*

Here's to more future "controversial" reviews....

You pole smoking, goat feeling...oh... It's not that controversial! nevermind .

Nah. You're entitled to your opinion. You had good points. It'd be like if Metal Gear 3 you were suddenly fighting Motherbrain and Ridley...you prefered the old scenario.

You gave it credit where it was due (graphics) and slammed it where you thought it was lacking.

More power to you.

I don't think this review is as controversial as Bobak's review of Minnasan no Okagesamadesu. I think there were a couple people that actually complained because they like mahjong. Well, some people aslo like spam. Go figure.

ZeroMJ, your review is good
Frankly speaking, I love MS3 so much.........but I love MS even more

I've played more MS (Saturn version) than MS3 because of music and gameplay.

MS3 is great, but for odd reason, I play MS more than MS3

heh, that's not that controversial at all. I hate Metal Slug 3 even more than you do, although it's for mostly the same reasons.

I pity whoever thinks it's the greatest Neo-Geo game ever, or greatest Contra-style game, or greatest whatever...

sets commetn tu cahnges ton masque!!!
vous etiez tous sur le forum:"ouais slug3 le meilleur" j'etais le seul a defendre slug1 en disant que il y avait la pure ambiance guerilla etc...
tu me deçois serieux
mdr

allez a plus!!

sorry for the french!
i said in french that it's true.
The feeling in slug1 is not the same than in the other episods.
Metal slug is a real war game, with the war songs, the soldiers..
The other episods have lost that thing.
Now i think that slug2/3/x, are good but they are only a game in more, not a cult game like slug1.

slug1 is the first and the best of course;

ZeroMJ, I hear you, and I have to admit that I can second some of your points; I too miss that cool WW2/militaristic feeling of MS1 and 2.

I have no problem with the difficulty of MS3 tho, nor with all that B-movie stuff (aliens, carnivorous plants, etc.). Specially the giant locusts are big fun to slaughter, and most of the other sprites and bgs are brilliant and highly original.

Zero, I actully agree with you 100% on your review. First, I hate how Metal Slug 3 is so hard. The first time, it took me 45 credits to beat the damn game. Plus the game is just TOO LONG. When I like to play a game (platformer action type), I have the urge to beat the game everytime This game is over an hour long The graphics, sound, and DETAIL are incredible as always. The helicopter and airplane in the 5th stage kicks ass, especially if you are playing 2 players. But, I don't like how it takes about 15 shots to kill an alien. I feel worthless unless I have a Heavy Machine Gun. I love running through Metal Slug X Stabbing and shooting soldiers in one hit. Just running and jumping through the stage. Now the gameplay is slower, which I don't like

Oops, I didn't mean to make the post this long

Well, it's seriously fucking my 640x480 res monitor. I can shrink it for you to about half the size. Want me to? No one appreciates it right now, trust me.

I mean.....daaaamn.

People were bitching about mine and it was easily a third of that size and weighed about a tenth of that (mine was 30K max).

I appreciate a nice insert and all but...yikes.

I don't understand why some people criticize Metal Slug 2, X, and 3 just because they don't carry forward a pure military theme. Granted, MS1 with its pure military theme is AWESOME, and I really like the fact that it consistently maintains that theme throughout. However, there's no written rule that says every Metal Slug game should adhere to the same technique. MSX and MS3 in particular are each, in their own ways, masterpieces of 2D action/shooting bliss. It doesn't bother me at all that they add all kinds of extra stuff like zombies, aliens, and other weird creatures. As a matter of fact, these elements increase the variety in the games.

While I respect your right to review MS3 as you see fit, I found the game to be incredible and a blast to play. And MSX is also an awesome game in its own.

What all the Metal Slug games show is that there is a huge untapped market for this style of game, 2D action/shooting games with this kind of quality in backgrounds, sprites, sound effects, music, etc. While the demand is there, its doubtful that we'll see too many more games like this, although we can HOPE that Metal Slug 4 at least comes out for MVS, if not home cart . . .

i've never played metal slug 3, i bought one, havent played it yet, still havent [ayed it off (long story)

personally i prefer metal slug 1 over 2/x, it has more replay, i dunno why, it just does. i have them both for mvs, and ms1 gets the most play. except now, because some one is borrowing it...
