Theres a new Dodonpachi 3 already being tested in japan. I'm not sure if this is on the pgm igs system, but this one is developed and credited by CAVE. ...who are the makers of the original Dodonpachi. Dodonpachi 2 came out for the igs polygamemaster, however, CAVE was not credited at all on part 2. Which leads me to believe that IGS developed part two without Cave. Anywayz, here is some cool footage of DD3. I have practically all of the great 2d vertical shooters and I must say that I am very excited about this release. Everytime I think that I wouldn't see anymore 2d games, surprises like metal slug 4 and Dodonpachi 3 continue to pop up to make life sweeter. As you will note in the footage, which is in wmv format, the nice sit down arcade. I sure wish they had more of these arcades in the states. This video will be up only for a week. http://loveless.virtualave.net/boss_1.wmv

This is great news neogeoholic. I love the original Donpachi and Dodonpachi games for the Saturn (haven't gotten the arcade pcbs yet), and it would be great to have another one available. The older games are insane, over-the-top shooters with massive weapons and frantic gameplay, loads of fun to play. Never played Dodonpachi 2, but I've heard it is excellent as well.

On a side note, it seems that the days of classic 2D shooters are pretty much completely gone. Capcom and Psikyo released some recently (like Giga Wing and Mars Matrix), but for the most part there have been few others out in the last year or two. Zero Gunner 2 and Giga Wing 2 were excellent, but are essentially 2D shooters with 3D graphics . . . still nice, but not like the old classics.

I'd love to see new sequels like Shienryu 2, Batsugun 2, Twin Cobra 3, and another Battle Garegga style game (even just port Battle Bakraid over to a console at least). And also, a new Raiden Fighters game, and all the old ones ported over to the XBox or GC, that series is awesome!! Why can't more developers port the old classics over to home consoles, there is a huge potential market that would buy them!! Seems it will never be, though . . .

Progear No Arashi on cps 2 is the newest fully 2d shooter until this Dodonpachi 3 comes out. It is true that most of the new games coming out are 2d gameplay with 3d graphics. which actually is quite fine with me. HOwever I stil prefer good old hand drawn 2d games. The newest 2d gameply-3 d graphics game is Ikaruga made by treasure for the NAOMI GD ROM SYSTEM. http://www.geocities.com/treasurefp/ikaruga.html
As for the latest arcade shooter conversion. One TAITO GNET ARCADE shooter is coming to xbox in a few days:
http://www.coremagazine.com/news/5487.php3

not to mention Psyvariar (ALSO TIATO GNET BASED) on ps2 next month.

Yep , i have seen guwange !
it's a great shooter from cave and atlus i think !
you can choose from three different charakters ,all some ninya heros !
the game has pretty nice graphics,in old japan !
and the music is good too !!

sometime there is a wall or another obstacle in your way,but when you hold down the firebotton you have a second weapon that shoots over opstacles !
gives the game some special note !!

worth to play it !!

The move rules !!!!

Actually the 2D shooters are still extremely popular in the Tokyo arcades. And there are a lot of them. I got to play e.g.

Ikaruga (fantastic!!!)
DoDonPachi2 (grrreat!)
Vasara (Ninja style shoot ´em up - tops!)
Raiden Fighters Jet (2? don`t remember but as well excellent)
Progear no Arashi (the TRUE Metal Slug successor!)

and had the chance to play for the first time the `92 R-Type Leo and did not in my wildest dreams think it was that great - wow! It`s such a shame they never ported this one.

About the Ikaruga port: I think the PS2 can`t handle it :D and a DC port will rest a dream I suppose.

@Herzog Drei: Zero Gunner 2 DC exists!

Ah, but there is a chance that ikaruga will be ported to the GC (in my mind anyway). That game was made for the naomi, which sega produced... sega now releases games for GC. Treasure and Sega probably still have some contract together...?

Thx for the Zero Gunner info,Kyokugen!

As with the Saturn,Sega released the crappy shooters on pal-
and held the good one's back for jpn.-only!
