Anyone see Thumb Bandits on C4 (UK) on Friday ?

The bloke from Ravengames was on, he was talking about the cost and rarity of old games / consoles - interesting stuff.

Anyway he gets round to the Neo-Geo and says it's probably the most expensive system going and games can go for thousands of pounds (ok) Then he says that the most expensive game is US Metal Slug (hmm) and that there are only 3 known copies - whhaaaattt !!! Shurely shome mishtake <img src="graemlins/loco.gif" border="0" alt="[Loco]" />

He must av bin talking about euro Kizuna, cos' the guy off thumb bandits said at the end if anyone knows of one the guy at Ravengames would pay a mint for it (doubt it) - dunno I'm confused <img src="graemlins/help.gif" border="0" alt="[Help]" /> <img src="graemlins/help.gif" border="0" alt="[Help]" />

Anyone know how many copies of US Metal Slug were produced ?

Edited for spelling - doh !

He's either misinformed or trying to make it seem more rare than what it really is.

Knowing this guy Tony at Raven personally through the business and other aquaintances in his area, Bromley, Kent....Tony is basically only in the games business for the money....and trust me this guy is loaded, used to drive a porsche...big house.....and he runs a completely honest set up too.....no company name changes every two seconds like some scumbags up North........its been raven games since.. 1988.....but you know what Tony can be a wanker sometimes.....off course he's going to greatly exaggerate the price of neo carts.....most people who go to him have never heard of shawns forums....they dont know the great deals you can get here....trading with people across the world.....they dont know about Laurent, Adol, Arcade, Jeff Kurtz....Supersellers back in the day......etc etc......so of course its in Tonys interests to elevate prices as high as possible......that way he makes massive profits.... check this months EDGE magazine...in a retro feature they state the "market value" of the neo aes system to be £1000 ($1550)!!!

What Tony is doing and trying to do raising the price of neo products massively....is what telegames have done for ages and look at them......

Oh! he said Metal Slug...I wasn't listening properly. :p

But Raven Games (and a few similar UK indy shops) have NO excuse for their artificially high prices. OK, so if he's trying to fool the average Joe on the street into thinking that his prices are market value, he might succeed. But how does he plan to pull the wool over our eyes, the average Neo collector? We all know the value of these carts, right? WE are his market. I'd be interested to know how many Neo carts he sells...

'spose everyone's entitled to make a crust, good luck to him. I've bought some carts off him in the past (before I got into importing 'em) Even bought Slug 3 off him (ripped off - or what) :( Won't do it again anyway.

Wonder who bought the MOTW for £499 ? !!! wow !! Don't see that on the stock page anymore.

having been born and raised in the UK, i used to gasp at the price of Neo Geo stuff - it still astounds me.

one thing i would say - the Japanese prices for games is way out of line with what you guys are paying.

Are you implying that we're paying too much for Japanese Neo-Geo games or too little? I'm curious...

Yes, I think he's saying that, compared to what used Neo-Geo carts sell for in Japanese used shops, US/UK denizens are getting ripped off. I know what he's talking about, because I've been to Japan and seen firsthand that prices on used carts are markedly lower for most titles.

Edit: fucking UBB code

Lets look at the facts Its Friday night the weekend has started. Last orders at the pub is usually about an hour before the program. You sure you didn't stagger home and turn on the TV just to see the 3 copies Metal Slug on TV?!!!!

If Raven Games say there are only 3 copies around. They didn't mean their stock levels did they?

Edges £1000 price tag must have been a typing error. I could have ment to put £100.

Yeah he definitely said 3 copies - I didnt watch the program myself, but I had a customer come into my work today and he quoted it. I really couldn't contain myself and had to put him right on the matter - he didn't really know anything about the Neo I think, so I can't really blame him for believing the guy.

Still, I guess I should phone Raven games and tell em that I personally know at least 3 or 4 people who have an AES and Metal Slug - wonder what he'd say to that :D

Well, thanks to the lack of any really decent NeoGeo UK stockists, I tend to buy a fair ammount from Ravengames.
I know that its cheaper to buy stuff from america, and that his prices are basically just straight dollars-to-pounds inflation (you know, $250 = £250) which is pretty normal for a uk gamer on any format.
I will say one thing that was a little suspect though. I bought a Strikers 1945 plus cart from him, which was faulty (number 48 in case anyone spots it trying to be sold). but after I got it I noticed that he no longer had them listed as being in stock. So I assumed that he had sold out. So I contacted him and mentioned that as he had none in stock I would just have to make do with a refund.
At this point he revieled that he actually did have a couple that he had kept back so that he could wait untill they had all sold out and then sell them on at a higher price!!

OK so as buisness practices go thats a little nasty - but he must have had second thoughts seeings as he now has them back in stock and actually at a slightly lower price than previously.

And just so you all know - the Strikers cart was replaced without any fuss, and the replacement copy works fine. Ravengames may be no where near as cheap as getting suff from america imported, but its not a rip-off like telegames.
Hopefully Ravens price for KoF2001 wont be the £299 that they have predicted, otherwise I'll turn to NCS.

I remember paying 60 quid for a psx game from raven years ago...

Seemed even more expensive still, cos I was on pocket money.

There are cheaper and just as reliable places to buy games from in the UK....MVS at least. AES is more difficult <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />
