Someone please explain this to me

I found this one Neo geo website that has screenshots of Neo games with mixed sets of characters. For example, there is a screen shot of Samurai Showdown 4 with Last Blade 2 characters. There are also custom life bars, etc.

Did this person find a way to hack roms and add in new characters? What is "Mugen"?

Hmmmm, so it is a different game engine. The graphics look really nice. I guess it's good for at least taking some very interesting screen shots.

Samurai Shodown 1 Haohmaru against Samurai Shodown 4 Haohmaru would be pretty interesting.
