It's a bit late now that we know the outcome... but... here's some old news I dug up, and didn't know about. SNK was confirmed to have signed up for a Naomi project. It was said that the game was going to be FF: Wild Ambition. It's 2 years after the fact now, but this is something that I had not heard about.

<a href="http://www.segatech.com/arcade/naomi1/index.html" target="_blank">Naomi</a>

I'm still trying to find out if ikaruga came out for the naomi 1 board, or the naomi 2 board... if anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks.

Ikaruga is Naomi 1 but requires the gdrom addon.

So what is the difference between the naomi 1 and naomi 2?

Naomi 2 is very powerful at pumping out polygons and lighting effects. It looks like it will be the successor of the naomi 1 (sounds stupid, but it could have failed... but by the looks of VF4, it won't). Lemme dig up the specs.

Naomi 1:

CPU: SH-4 64-bit RISC CPU (200 MHz 360 MIPS / 1.4 GFLOPS)
Graphic Engine: PowerVR (PVR2DC)
Sound Engine: Super Intelligent Sound Processor (with internal 32-bit RISC CPU, 64 channel ADPCM)
Main Memory: 32 MByte
Graphic Memory: 16 MByte
Sound Memory: 8 MByte
Media: ROM Board (maximum size of 168 MBytes)
Simultaneous Number of Colors: Approx. 16,770,000
Additional Features: Bump Mapping, Fog, Alpha-Bending (transparency), Mip Mapping (polygon-texture auto switch), Tri-Linear Filtering, Anti-Aliasing, Environment Mapping, and Specular Effect.

Naomi 2 is a bit of reading...<a href="http://www.segatech.com/arcade/naomi2/index.html" target="_blank">here</a>

I've seen a much better comparisson of the baords, but I can't find the site. A couple of interesting notes (on both boards in general) from the reading:

Up to 16 motherboards (naomi 1) can be linked together. "Theoritically a 16 board Naomi system could do (16 x 3.5 mpps) = 56 million polygons per second maximum! Realistically it would most likely be around 20 to 30 mpps."

A naomi 2 board can already do 10 mpps with 6 different light sources without any such link (that's probably the answer you were looking for with your question). It can do up to 16 different light sources, but the polygon production is greatly decreased at such high demand.

Also, the naomi 1 has twice the main and graphics memory than the dreamcast (not to mention 4x as powerful in sound), which could account for ikaruga not being released. My guess would be that they tried to make a port, and it just didn't work.

Funny thing is that it says Spawn vs. Street Fighter by CAPCOM (Fighter) <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" /> . WTF?
