Ok, you Neo Geo historian, what's the history behind the dogtags?

The Dog Tag was, IMO, a lame attempt from SNK USA to capitalize on the trailer trash mentality of the general US public by having a reputedly violent animal (deserved reputation or not, public opinion becomes reality) represent their gaming console. The idea was that the Neo Geo was the Pit Bull of the gaming scene and that all other consoles were weak by comparison, which we would probably all agree with, even though the marketing was to the lowest common denominator.

SNK USA, like most US distributors, was under the dellusion that the nice clean "Neo Geo" at the top of the cart spine just wasn't "hip" and "with it" enough for the US market, so they came up with the mean doggie as a way try and look "cool." For that matter, the "Fates" that appear on the top of the Japanese cart spines didn't cut it for them either. I actually like that logo the best, as it is the actual Neo logo, but why would a US marketing company begin to make sense.

In any case, the Pit Bull was supposed to induce the low brow, NASCAR, hillbilly crowd (again, most of the US population) into buying a system that they couldn't afford. It was later dropped because A) it was ugly and B)...well I don't have a "B," but thank God they quit making them.

There, I've shown my hand as the elitist wine sipper that I am. :D If you are reading this and are fan of the Dog Tag...I'm sorry (not for saying what I said, but because you are a fan). Please return to your Pork Rinds and Bologna sandwiches. :p

There, was that condescending enough? :D

(BTW, Pichai, none of that was directed at you personally. I was just spouting on my impression of the Dog Tag in general.)

He did submit, then he told me to wait because he wanted to remove all the games from their protective bags. IMO, the collection pic he has now looks great! It’s unique and a high quality close up. Definitely qualifies as a hardcore collection. This would make his page stand out, may even start a trend.

I actually kinda like the dogtag boxes... I don't like the actual dogtag itself, I think that looks stupid, and I agree that it was s tupid marketing scheme... But I think the black boxes look really cool. I think it makes the game logos stand out more, and it makes the colors look deepr. I've never actually owned a dogtag game though, and probably never will since all of my Home Cart stuff is going away next week <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Long live MVS!

yea, i agree, the dog tag boxes as a whole look nicer with the logo on black rather than on a color.

Hey, Wan Fu! While I hate the Dog Tags myself, I see no problem with enjoying them. I just have fun writing bitchy stuff like that. <IMG SRC="smilies/glee.gif" border="0">

About your picture, leave it the way it is! I love that you are kooky enough to BAG your games. I'm serious. That is truly hardcore. If nothing else, it makes your collection stand out. "Man, did you see that collector type that has his games BAGGED?!?" Go for it and have it with the bags man. I love it!

Hey RyoGeo, I know you were just having fun with that post. Touché.

Shawn, since some people here have taken a liking to that picture lets go ahead and put it up on the collection page.

Obviously, the plastic bags are there to protect the cases from wear and tear. It also helps to preserve the NEO GEO "smell" that we all love... <IMG SRC="smilies/smirk.gif" border="0">
