Can a virus or a trojan virus detroy your computer if you just read your email? It's the attached files that comes with your email
that activites the little virus.

Yeah, my company had 3 computers infected out of 50, I cleaned them out and sent a warning to all our staff. No more problems since they know what to look for. F**king viruses, they get very tiresome . . .

BTW ExeterIsLame, your sig is cool.

Sounds like the sircam virus. it's already extremely spread out, and people usually don't even know they are infected. it sends itself to everyone in your email addressbook. subject and attachment are random, body always says "Hi, I need your advice on the following" or similar, or the same text in spanish.

Will you guys all calm down, if you take the time to read about what a virii or trojan is, you'll know downloading an infected email won't do shit.

You have to run the app to infect yourself, don't open attatchments from people you don't know, or that look suspicious.

Theres no mystery to staying clean of them, it's just common sense. Theres nothing to be scared of either... geez.

I have used Forte Agent for several years. Once I tried Outlook Express- and I did not like it a bit. Agent is more intuitive.

Some days ago, actually not long after I posted in that "the most f**up..." topic I got what I would later discover to be both the Kriz and the Qaz viruses. Qaz was the worm, while Kriz, was something else, which has an extra very nasty surprise in store for anyone unfortunate enough to have that thing running on their computer Christmas morning.

I didn't download any attachments, because there was nothing to download. I just happened to get a few spam messages all of a sudden; something fairly uncommon for me.

I'm curious as to why Outlook Express is "self infecting." I use Outlook Express on both of my computers, and I received an email containing the SirCam virus on one of them. This was before the big uproar, I got the email over a month ago. I looked at the email and noticed the broken english, and I noted that it had a file attached that was "something.doc.bat" That was so obviously a virus, and even if it wasn't I didn't care that Mr. boken english needed my advice on his file, so I just deleted the damn thing. Does the fact that I read the email mean my computer was auto-infected? I never downloaded or ran any file... My hard drive hasn't been filled up with gibberish, and it hasn't been deleted (it would probably take a long time to clear 40 gigs) and the only other symptom can only be carried out on October 16th, so as far as I know I'm fine... Does Outlook Express really automatically download and run any and all files that are attached? I find that pretty hard to believe... I haven't scanned the computer for viruses (the one I'm on now is completely up to date and protected) If Outlook Express really does do that, than that's pretty shitty... I hope you guys are just exaggerating. Otherwise, I think the program is just fine. So long as it doesn't auto-infect my hard drive I'll probably continue to use the program... Someone please let me know though, so I can take the proper precautions... Hell, I might just reformat the damn thing, I've been meaning to do that for a while...

I've been getting hit by infected email attachments but I've not gotten hosed as I'm running email virus software and I stopped opening attachment files from people I do not readily recognize, expecially when the subject line looks odd.

Mark, you are infected with Sircam.

That's how it works, it searches through your address book and sends infected attachments to people in it.

Get a virus scanner and clean yourself out.

Chain, you are fine...sircam requires that you run the attachment.

However some worms propogate simply by opening the email..those are the ones that self propogate in OE.

The only time Outlook is "self-infecting" is if you have it set to auto open attachments. Just turn it off and that's that.
