Okay, I played Sengoku 2 for about an hour, and thought I'd give you my first impressions of it. Now keep in mind as you read this that these are all first impressions and are subject to change later, in other words, I'm not etching anything in stone by talking right now.
First off, I agree with artoffighting, this game is bizarre, no two ways about that. It comes across as a super heroish/time-traveling tale rather than rely heavily on Japanese folklore like the first one. A few highpoints include:
. Improved graphics over the first
. The music stays pretty true to the first
. Game speed is stepped up a few notches
Lowpoints include:
. All hacking and little to no punching and kicking. I liked the first where you had to earn weapons rather than just keep 'em.
. Your alter-egos are appointed to you right off. Again, you don't seem to have to earn much on this one.
. It doesn't have the heavy Japanese feel of the first one, which was very innovative for it's time and should've remained a staple of this one.
. The arch nemesis looks like he just escaped a Marvel or DC comic. Not knocking American pop culture here, I just can't understand why SNK went this way with the title. I mean, it's Sengoku, not Mutation Nation or Robo Army, it's not supposed to be outlandish and off the wall like those games.
Yeah, if you didn't care for the first one, definitely skip this one. Me, I loved the first one, so as it stands I'm sorta' let down with part 2. I hope it'll grow on me a little more as I keep playing it.
