Hey, all:

I was in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles this weekend and I managed to find Nakahira's SvC manga. First of all, it appears that this is not (unfortunately) the start of a new series. It seems that it is simply a single-chapter manga short story, made specifically for the manga anthology in which it appears. By the way, here's the vital stats on this anthology volume:

Title: ULTRAJUMP MEGAMIX Vol. 1
ISBN#: 4-08-782780-1
Publisher: Shuueisha
Price: 880 yen (includes sales tax)
Page count: 192 pages
On Sale: 1-22-2003

As the title indicates, this is an anthology of manga stories by manga artists who are regularly published by Shuueisha's manga labels, ULTRAJUMP and Young Jump Comics. MEGAMIX Vol. 1 features a wraparound cover illustration by Murata Range (of "Ao no rokugou" [Blue Submarine No.6] and "Gouketsuji Ichizoku" [Power Instinct] fame). The book's cover is text-free. Instead, a clear-plastic dustjacket provides the printing space for the book's title (spine & upper front), explanatory splash-blurb (lower front), barcode/ISBN/price info (upper back), and contributing artists' names (lower back). The result is an exceptionally professional appearance, with a Murata-sensei illustration unmarred by jacket text (since you can remove the plastic jacket to gain an unobstructed view of the cover illustration). Unfortunately, this illustration is Murata's only contribution to this anthology (he didn't provide any manga stories for it).

Here's the list of the 6 mangaka who contribute the manga stories in this volume (along with the title of the contributed work, and references to at least 1 of their well-known works):

Oh!great
"S -song of sapphire star-"
[other works: "Tenjou Tenge"]
Nakahira Masahiko
"Sakura Ganbaru! Tokubetsuhen"
[other works: "Hakaima Sadamitsu," "Street Fighter III RYU FINAL -Tatakai no saki ni-," "Sakura Ganbaru!," "Street Fighter ZERO," and "Cammy Gaiden"]
Matsumoto Takahal
"i/o"
[other works: "AGHARTA"]
Miwa Shirow
"DOGS Tokubetsuhen HARDCORE TWINS"
[other works: "DOGS"]
Sumihey
"Machi-san"
[other works: "PSYCHO LAW"]
Wang-pac
"Kodama cotton 100"
[sorry -- couldn't find any other works by Wang-pac]

Nakahira's contribution is 35 pages long and, as previously stated, is entitled "Sakura Ganbaru! Tokubetsuhen" [Sakura Ganbaru! Special Edition]. The cast members, in order of appearance, are: Yabuki Shingo, Kasugano Sakura, Kusanagi Kyo, Hibiki Dan, Chitose Kei (Sakura's best friend), Kanzuki Karin, Shibazaki (Karin's manservant), Gouki, and Ryu. Gouki and Ryu aren't actually an active part of the story -- they simply appear in one or two panels each, as Karin provides a running narrative for Shingo (and the reader), explaining the fighting style Sakura practices. The focal fight of the story is between Sakura and Kyo, although Shingo has a brief anonymous street fight at the very beginning of the manga.

BTW, I found my copy at the Los Angeles branch of Kinokuniya Bookstores. It was the last copy on the shelf, but they may have more in the rear stockrooms. As this book is still quite new, any branch of Kinokuniya or Asahiya bookstores should be able to special order it for you, if they don't already have it in stock.

Anyway, I figured a few of you would be interested in the info on this book. For those who prefer Japanese...

My apologies -- there's a couple glitches in the Japanese text near the very end of my post. I've tried entering the glitchy text a couple different ways and checking it via Preview Post, but I can't seem to make a few of the characters display properly. Sorry!

Edit: here's the <a href="http://ultra.shueisha.co.jp/UJ73/Hn73/RenjiMegaMix_106_170.gif" target="_blank">front cover image</a>, minus the book title text (which, again, isn't printed on the cover itself, but on the clear plastic dustjacket). And here it is, <a href="http://ultra.shueisha.co.jp/MegaMix/MegaMix1/MegaMix1Cov_150.jpg" target="_blank">with the dustjacket in place</a>, and again <a href="http://books.shueisha.co.jp/search/book_image/4-08-782780-1.jpg" target="_blank">without the splash blurb</a>.

Thanks for the write up!

Maybe I should stop by the fancy comic book store downtown in this city and see what they have.

Maybe I can get my hands on that, or even some KOF manga...

SWEETNESS! Looks like I'm going to be bothering videogameya again (poor guy- I've already had him try to track down a whole bunch of goods for me; now this comes up).

Thanks a ton, Dash no Chris. Let me know if you ever run across it again (I may just have to buy it off of you). By the way, are there any video game-related stories in either Ultrajump and/or Young Jump Comics (or any other monthly game manga anthologies)? I know there was a videogame manga anthology published by Famitsu called "Famitsu Bros.", but that's the only recent anthology I know of that was churned out on a monthly basis (the title was cancelled following the release of the September '02 issue).

EDIT: I'm assuming this is the cover, correct?

I don't see any game-related manga in either Ultrajump or Young Jump. I haven't noticed much in the way of game-related stories in any other manga magazines in quite awhile, either.

It is, indeed.

Hey... a while back, on eBay, I saw a Fatal Fury Real Bout 2 manga... I don't know if it was Chinese or Japanese. Does anyone know anything about it?
