The original technos dodgeball games have 4 players on each side of the inner ring, and 3 on each of the outside. Except in beanball mode (which reminds me... the SFC version has a beanball mode too). I believe when you play 4 player in the SFC version, you play 2 on 2, and you can switch what character you control as long as they are on the same team.
In the SFC version, you can set up how you want your characters possitioned, and you can do some crazy strategies. You can tell your characters to climb on top of each other's shoulders so you can jump super high in the air, and throw the character on your shoulders at your opponent.
Beanball mode is just you vs. 7 other characters, and you can run anywhere on the screen. I could go on for days about that game.
One great thing I have to mention about that game is the music. Each tune fits well with the 20 some odd different levels, and truth be told, I have turned on my SFC purely to listen to the music on England's level. That is one of my favorite tunes in any video game.
Kunio's dodgeball is a different game than battle dodgeball. SD battle dodgeball features characters like Ultraman, Mothra, Godzilla, stuff like that. Banpresto made these games to compete with the sports titles Technos was making. They made Battle Dodgeball 1, Battle Dodgeball 2, Battle Soccer (I think they made a battle soccer 2), and Battle Baseball. The controll is very stiff in the games, and they move pretty slowly, but they are okay... The interesting thing about these dodgeball games are that besides just having a VS. mode, there is a one player RPG. You travel across a linear map, and play dodgeball games to boost your skill points (such as speed, life meter, defense). If you beat a boss (i.e. Godzilla or some famous japanese movie star), you can get rid of one of your generic players and add the boss to your team. The super throws in this game are awesome!!! They are hard to do though, because you have to get "points" by catching the ball when it is thrown at you. It doesn't sound hard but since the controlls in this game are terrible... After you get a certain amount of points, you can do a super throw. Basically, whoever masters catching the ball wins. I had it down for a bit... but it was still annoying.
There is also another series of dodgeball games called dodgeball danpei. They are made by Sunsoft. 2 were released on the Famicom System, but they really aren't dodgeball games. You are dealt cards, and depending on what you and your opponent are dealt, you see some "video" of a dodgeball game. They released another for Super Famicom. It's a pretty strange game... I haven't played it much because I don't think there is a VS. mode on it. It's like an RPG I guess. The last one of course was released on the japanese megadrive. It looks to be the best of the bunch, but I haven't played it. In these games, instead of having a life meter, you play to 7. If you hit your opponent 7 times without him catching it, you win.
There are some more obscure dodgeball games. One is called Panda dodgeball, and it was released for the PC. There was also another dodgeball game for the Turbo Grafx 16 called cyber dodgeball... it's dodgeball with robots and skeletons or something like that (never played these before though). Okay, one last thing... I promise. Technos ported the NES version of dodgeball to the TG16 and gave it a plot with aliens who come and capture kunio or something like that... sounds cool... just thought I'd mention it.
Long story short, stick with the technos dodgeball games.
