now that the forums are back up, the chat is sadly....empty. although the chat is affiliated with neo-geo.com, it is not a prerequisite that you must talk neo in there. in the past myriad topics have been discussed that run the gamut from games to movies to dion's sexuality. so the chat's a decent place to get to know the people that post on the boards a bit better...you might find out that your most hated board member is actually good to talk to in real-time.

i know that accessing an IRC channel through a java interface isn't exactly the most pleasant experience, so if you'd like to do away with that, you can download mIRC to access the channel via a program you can easily leave running on your system.

all you need to do is download the installer. once you install the program and run it, you'll be asked for some information, just enter the server's name, irc2.chat-solutions.org, and whatever nickname you go by. the default port number is fine and shouldn't be changed.

now, connect to the server and type "/join #neo-geo" to enter the channel.

it seems that many people are new to the world of IRC in these forums, you can look around the mIRC site for basic commands that you'll find useful.

that's a Pulp Fiction reference, eh. I can see why someone would take it wrong if they never saw that movie.

I noticed that the java (web-based) chat interface seems to drop the connection a lot. I assume that the mIRC program interface is much more stable? And what about "lag", I've heard some of people mention lag on occasion . . . I assume thats when a whole mess of messages all come in a row? Anyway I'll be installed mIRC at home and trying it out, thanks for the tips on setup.

Right, but there was not a single iota of negative connotation involved either (me and Lee are tight, yo), except, of course, the word itself, which is a whole other can of worms. So, I can see the problem as well.

I saw the movie as well..LOL Even though a great movie line those who did not see it may take offence. The "N" word is not the best word to use in public chat so....

the disconnects were culprit to both the java chat and server. lag can still be ferocious using mIRC when there are 18+ people in the chan, but it does help with disconnects.

I don't agree with how the chat is just an alternitive to most people.

Boards are down so they run to chat...

People should stop by the chat anyways....

IMO....

I have been using MIRC for the chat and I must say the disconnects are rather annoying. I stay connected for about 5 min then it disconnects. Should we maybe try moving the channel to a different server? Xnet is very stable.

Just an idea....

Some good topics in there, it has gotten a bit busier now, might soon be great again :)
its fun to chat in real time for a change to members you post with on the forums.

I agree on the dropping. Very annoying. I DL's IRC in the hopes of having better speed and stability. Speed is better, but man, it drops early and often. Makes me not want to go. <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

I do get some lag (not using mIRC) but hardly ever get disconnected so I really enjoy being in the chat room. Still gets lively, even if it's not constantly. I really like it.

I just went to the chat and no-one was there at all... :) I do stop by there from time to time, but not many people actually bother...

Why not try Efnet? Thats a lot more stable! (notice the sarcasm in my voice :) )

i'll drop by more often as well. Efnet isn't all that bad if someone ever considers going there... Lag is quite present on the current chat, whichever way you use to chat.

cya!

Chat seems to be busiest during the evening hours in the US time zones.
