I Really dig the GBA/KOF EX pack, but I was wondering what folks have to say about it. I read the review, only to see it sucks, but I would like to hear from some other folks who might have tried it! What do you think? How id it as a GBA game, and then compare to a NEO KOF game?

heh

This debate has been raging in the Neo-Geo Pocket forum.

I think the general consensus is that the GBA ain't got nothing on the NGPC when it comes to fighting games.

NGPC has better control with its stick and the representational as opposed to realistic graphics work best on the smaller screen...

SNK were responsible themselves for some of the NGPC's pocket fighters and it shows...

KOF R2 is a pocket version of '98 the similarities to the full size version are simply unbelievable, the depth of this game for a pocket fighter is quite astounding!

well...

i haven't played it yet, but from what i've seen and heard, the main problems are:

poor control
WAY too many bugs

but the most important bug that I noticed was the VERY SLOW gameplay. KOF R-2 had some snazzy ass gfx, not really comparable to EX though. YET! R-2 was very faithful to KOF98's gameplay speed, and it really does feel like you're playing KOF.

but uh... i dunno. i think you should try it for yourself, you being mr. happy boy optimism man and that

Speed issues? No way, the speed is fine and there's no problem with that. Too many people must be playing this game on an emulator and judging it from that. :b

Anyway, KOF EX is a decent game. The play control is very good, and that's what counts. The graphics are also very good and extremely close to Neo version. The animation is about on par with the PSX version of KOF '99, which is very good for a portable. Despite its KOF '99 appearance, KOF EX plays like KOF 2000, so all characters will play like their 2k incarnations, and the striker system will work the same way. My only real complaint about KOF EX is the sound, which flat out SUCKS. There's a huge amount of voice missing, and it skips sometimes. Sound effects are too low, and the music is GB quality. But at the same time, it's on par with the NGPC fighters...which isn't saying much.

You get 20 playable characters:

-(Shin) Kyo
-Benimaru
-Moe
-Ryo
-Robert
-King
-Terry
-Andy
-Mai
-Athena
-Bao
-Kensou
-Leona
-Ralf
-Clark
-Kim
-Chang
-Choi
-Iori
-Geese

And Eight striker-only characters:

-Shingo
-Yuri
-Joe
-Chin
-Jhun
-K'
-Maxima
-Vanessa

Moe Habana is a new character created just for this game; I find her to be a pretty mediocre fighter. It's nice to see Geese though! Iori and Geese are the game's booses/unlockable fighters. K', Vanessa, and Maxima are hidden extra strikers.

Overall, KOF EX is great for a portable fighter. Capcom's Super Street Fighter II X Revival is a better port, but it doesn't have the amount of characters, voice samples, and animation of KOF '99/2000. It's definitely worth purchasing if you're a KOF fan and want a good portable fighter for the GBA. It's going to be very interesting to see how SFA3 Upper turns out compared to this title; the GBA has had some surprises with its portable fighters and this one may end up being the best fighter on the system. Even Namco has done an impressive port of Tekken(which, incidentally, has some of the best sound ever heard from the GBA).

If you're considering buying a GBA just for KOF EX, though, you'll definitely want to check the game out first. If you're using an emulator, make sure you're playing it on a PC good enough to handle it. But if you like portables and don't own a GBA yet, buy one! You can't go wrong and the system already has a very impressive library of games.

Slow or fast I''m still timid on it because it has to deal with that "NES like" control pad.How hard is it to pull off moves?
