New Power Instinct - beta test report

I received an informing mini review of New Power Instinct from a resident in Japan. He attended the beta testing twice since the game has been at Neo-Geo land 3, in Esaka, Osaka.

You may have already read several posts on the forums concerning NPI and its beta testing, but this review does contain additional new info and is definitely more comprehensive in content. Sounds like a promising new release!

-------------------

This is the first beta testing that I attended where the game seemed unfinished. There was no intro sequence, and Shin Goketuji ended after 4 or 5 battles with no boss or credits. Perhaps Noise Factory is hiding most of the game until it’s full release. However, from what I saw, and played, Shin Goketuji appears very good and seemed a bit more refined than their last game, Rage of the Dragons. Currently, there seems to be 15 playable characters. I used Chinnen (a bald, zen monk looking guy), Hikaru (a young girl that welds a stick-like sword), and White Buffalo (a Native American who resembles Alex of Street Fighter III). Shin Goketuji has plenty of other interesting characters, and although very nicely drawn and decently animated, I wish they were more detailed like KOF sprites. Another memorable aspect of this MVS cart was that there was lots of incredible music with REAL SINGING! By this, I don’t mean repeated voice samples, but ongoing vocals-I’m already looking forward to a music CD.

Shin Goketujiis easy to pick like any good Neo-Geo fighter, and the buttons are laid out like the King of Fighters series (A=light punch / B=light kick / C=heavy punch / D= heavy kick / AB=escape dodge / CD= strong attack move). I’m glad that they used proven control method rather than doing something new, but uncomfortable.

Like another odd game, Waku Waku 7, Shin Goketuji has a lot of weirdness-from angry teeth tossing grandmas to a man-dog named, Poochy, but hey, at least they’re taking risks to make something interesting. The only thing I wasn’t too into was some of the bright colors used-it made some of the graphics kind of gaudy looking, but that is pretty unimportant. I hope that SG does come out soon, and we at least get a home cart release.

It's good to hear an opinion from someone who's willing to weigh the pros and the cons rather than just... The latter. :)

I still wonder how the game will play though. It sounds like it's going to be just like RotD still, which is okay with me, but... I hope they can take it to another level here. This guy seems to think so. "More refined" sounds like a very big plus if it is true.

Waiting for videos and more screenshots...
Happy to hear the game looks better than a rage of the dragon and that not all the features were available in the beta...
We can hope the best is still unrevealed.

Thanks for the update Shawn.

Still unconvinced... although it does sound slightly more appealing than what I've heard thus far...

OMG... I think I just creamed myself reading Shawn's post. I will buy that game.

I mean, if it has more tracks like the staff roll in Rage of the Dragons (which was incredible), I'd buy 2. I mean, well.

Hmmn.

Music in a game means a lot to me.

Ditto. Previous games in the GI/PI series always stood out from other fighting games, musically. Lots of tracks featuring a coupling of modern music with more traditional sounding Japanese melodies. With my recent fixation on Japanese bands The Cobra Twisters and Soul Flower Union, I've been hoping like hell that SGI/NPI would carry on the musical traditions of previous installments in the series.

Yeah, the key of life.

Actually I was excited when I first heard about a PI game on Neo. I like the second Atlus PI game a lot, and this info here sounds good. Guess it will be a nice game.

Can't wait to fight with Granny again. I used to annoy the hell outta my friends with her, hope they left her zany moves intact.

Wow, I was pretty keen on the game already from what I saw before, but now I'm really anticipating it.

After having fun w/ Waku Waku 7, I'm definitely in the mood for another "crazy Japanese fighter".

Peace

Singing?

That's awesome.

But I don't want flaming Japanese operatic-pop.
Maybe some jap-rock? That's be great...but I'm sure its wishful thinking.

As long as the location-test code WAS unfinished code, and a boss and intro are going to be added for the final version then this has me very excited.

I really enjoyed RotD (Still play it more than KoF2002) as a fun, knockabout fighter, and I can't see any reason why NPI will be any worse.

Songs in the game?

Now that sounds quite interesting, and since the man behind the music ( AQUA STUDIO ) made the music of RotD, is for sure that he made the music for this one, I mean, game companies usually hire the same guy for their games, take for example ( bad example) the guy Brezzasoft hire to make KOF 2001 and 2002 music ( he also made EVOLUTION SOCCER music ), if the soundtrack is just as good as RotD I will have to add one more CD to my game music collection :D

If the music is anything like it is in PI2, then it's a combination of both of those and various other types of messed up stuff.

Music in a game means a lot to me too - a good soundtrack really can make or break the atmosphere of a game imo. So far this game is looking more and more interesting... can't wait to hear what it actually sounds like (and of course see the game in motion).
