It's a Region-2 double-DVD set documenting the history of SNK, profiling many of the games the company produced. Unfortunately, my computer here at the courthouse won't display Japanese, either, so I'll try posting more details from home (if someone doesn't beat me to it) after 6:30pm PST tonight.

Here are links to earlier threads on this topic, posted on <a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=004510#000000" target="_blank">12/07/02</a> and <a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=004559#000004" target="_blank">12/26/02</a>.

As some of you know, a friend and I run an online shop for Japanese DVDs and CDs (<a href="http://www.hoteiyalv.com/" target="_blank">Hoteiya Las Vegas</a>). Due to the very limited distribution channels for this DVD set in Japan, our Japanese supplier can't source this item for us. However, our Japanese business partner has agreed to pre-order one of these for me, direct from Ascii. If the zeal this board showed for this item is still as great now as it was last month, I'd be willing to have him reserve more copies on my tab for you folks. If you're interested in one (or, God love you, more than one) of these, please drop me an email at orders@hoteiyalv.com -- use a header that references "SNK DVD set" or somesuch -- so I can get a head count.

Okay, here we go -- here's a paraphrase of the DVD description:
This 2-DVD set primarily consists of a 4-part documentary covering the more-than-20-year history of SNK. SNK affiliates examine the course charted by the company. Heretofore little-known portions of SNK's history are visually depicted. An examination of SNK's world-famous NEO-GEO hardware is conducted, with 100 games being profiled over the course of over 140 minutes of film. DVD bonus features include the May, 2002 Korean TV broadcast entitled, "KOF 2001 Japan-Korea Rivalry Battle - Finals." To say that this is the zenith of top-level competition is no exaggeration -- this ultimate battle is a must-see for fans. Includes leaflet.

To date, there have been no indications of any subtitle features with this set. Therefore, my conclusion is that there will be no subtitles. Although, there could be some Japanese subtitles in the KOF 2001 Finals featurette, if there are any comments / interview clips w/the Korean competitors.

The set costs 14000 yen (including Japanese salestax). Using today's yen:dollar exchange rate (118.150 yen : $1), that's just about $120, as GF said. I'd like to try to offer these to the folks here for $130-$135 each -- this will cover the cost of the DVD set; plus the local shipping (from Ascii to my Japanese business partner), the international shipping (from my Jbp to my home in Las Vegas), and the final shipping from me to you. If I were to request that payment be made to my PayPal account, would this present a problem to any of you?

Please let me know asap if you're interested.

Sounds promising, but you would think with all of the features that DVD promises (subtitling, multiple language option), at least have English subtitles. I'll buy anyway. At least my DVD player is all region.

One of these days, we'll have our own US DVD of nationwide video game tourneys for NEO games, such as KOF and SNK vs. Capcom. This will happen guys, I promise you.

Actually, for a Japanese DVD package, it's not. Those of us in America are accustomed to paying $15, $20, $25, or $30 for a new U.S. movie release (90-120mins) or the U.S. release of a new anime series (4-5 episodes each) on DVD. In Japan, a new Japanese movie on DVD goes for about 4000-6000 yen ($35-$50), an American movie on DVD costs about 2500-4500 yen ($21-$38), and one vol. of an anime TV series on DVD will run about 5250-6300 yen ($45-$55) on the average (and that's usually for 2 or 3 episodes per vol.).

When you consider that you're getting more than 140mins with the 2-DVD SNK set, 14000 yen is actually fairly typical Japanese pricing.

Again, since no multi-language options (either soundtrack or subtitle) have ever been mentioned since this DVD set was first announced, I personally am certain that this set will NOT be subtitled.

This is fairly typical of most DVD releases of Japanese productions. While many Japanese studios and/or DVD publishers are seeing the merits in including subtitles in Japanese and/or other languages and go to the trouble of doing so, the slight majority of Japanese films I've seen released to DVD don't have these options. Most foreign films released on Japanese DVD do have subtitles in Japanese (and in the language in which the film was originally recorded).
