SNK in EGM #171.... $9.99 Ports?

...in EGM October #171...reports of SNK's death had been greatly exaggerated. After 2 years of legal battles, a happy ending has emerged. "Were back, simple as that." says President Ben Herman. The party kicks off this October (pending approval) with a special PS2 King of Fighters two-in-one pack (KOF 2000 & 2001) and continues in November with a new addition to the Metal Slug shooter series for Game Boy Advance and a PS2 port of Metal Slug 3. Future plans include $9.99 PS1 versions of old Neo-Geo hits, arcade classic compilations, online, XBOX and (gasp) 3-D games...

And in case you missed the earlier thread..."Samurai Showdown Zero will be out in winter for the Neo-Geo arcade and home console systems." They didn't say which "winter," but I'm guessing winter 2003...

Question...what will these ports do to the value of current and future prices for NGH/AES carts? I can't speak for anyone but me, but I dug the "exclusivity" of this game system and it's games. Will everyone now just sell all their stuff and just pick up the ports?

Nothing will replace the feel of an authentic Neo Geo system. If anything, these ports will probably increase the popularity of the Neo Geo, as they will give the average gamer a taste of Neo goodness. I am excited about these ports for the aforementioned reasons, but I will never part with my home cart system.

They will be no where near the same "Arcade Experience" as the MVS/AES carts are - graphically or playability wise.

It will however raise interest in the Neo which is a good thing :)

I'll probably buy them just to see / compare to the real thing :)

Games were never meant as objects to retire with. Ports are a good thing and will get the word about the Neo out to newer generations.

What I am wondering is wether this ports at 9.99 that they are talking about are really new ports of "unported" NeoGeo games, or just low priced re-editions of the ports that already exist for PSone, such as KOF series, MSlug, Real Bout etc.

Well, if I recall correctly, Ben Herman mentioned in an interview that they plan on releasing ports of the classic pre-Neo-Geo games SNK made, such as Athena, Psycho Soldiers, P.O.W., and Ikari Warriors. They might also throw some old school Neo-Geo hits in there as well.

Personally, I'd prefer they just put them all on one DVD and release it on the PS2.

Get rid of the "real thing" and purchase the ports???
You mean get rid of the technicaly sound cartridge format(which is something special in itself because what other active game company produces carts?? The cartridge format is kick ass ,by itself!! classic game making!!) to purchase the ports for the technically unsound, fragile CD medium?
Give up my Neo Geo for PORTS???? eek_2
Glad to see SNKP in the mags again...
Now to all of you who wish to take my comments the wrong way..DONT Ports are perfectly fine for anyone looking for an economical "fix".

I think most of us will get them just to have another SNK piece in their collection. Plus it'll be cool to play 'em and see if they have any cool extras.

Absolutely! I've played ports on DC and SS
and was pleased with most.

I loved MOTW on DC, but beyond that is just didn't seem to do the game justice. As someone metioned, it doesn't feel quite the same. On that note I can't wait to pick up SNK vs.Capcom for Aes espcially since I think it releases/ ships the day after my b-day. drool Ah, it's a good year..

But do you think that SNK will drop prices on new carts in the future...i.e. Samurai Showdown Zero...since ports will sell for $50.00?

I believe they're re-releases, similar to greatest hits collections. If they were going to re-port those titles, I imagine only the PS2 can handle that many sprites, as the PSX was a very weak 2D gaming system (hence, Saturn's popularity for the exact opposite.)

Here's what I wanna see...

An AOF 1-3 pack. I've only played 1 on my friend's SNES but I own 2 and 3, and they're REALLY great. If they'd decrease the difficulty of 2 (and maybe balance 3's, it's easy right until stage 9, then it gets a bit too hard, they need to smoothen it out), and possibly update the graphics on 2 (Dunno about 3, as much as I L <img src="http://www.neo-geo.com/ubb/icons/icon29.gif" alt=" - " />VE AOF 2's graphics to death (wow I'm an old school graphics whore, heehee), 3 has graphics that still impress today), that would be like the coolest thing ever.

Also, I think they should release some GBA compiliations of like 3 or 4 games, like with games like FFS, Ghost Pilots, Cyber Lip, Baseball Stars 2/2020, Super Sidekicks, AOF2, Magicial Lord, Raguy, Puzzled, SamSho 1 or 2 (kinda early games that won't bog down the GBA too much with a ton of effects), I think they'd sell well.

But then again this may just be me being overenthusiastic (I think it is).

the porting idea is genius. As stated before it'll probably be older games, sort of like the Greatest Hits titles on ps1. It'll definetly increase the popularity of neo geo titles.

I remember they said some months back that
the ports their talking about are the ports of games like metal slug for psx that were already leased in Japan but never came out in the US.

nothing will beat the feel of the real neo, but it is cool that they are re-release some title for the casual gamer, which will bring popularity of certain games back, which is good IMO.

Possibly. I was going to say they could at least try to bring some of them out for GBA, as Playmore had a hand in the superb KOF EX2 (along with, I believe, the original KOF designers), and they're bringing out a Metal Slug game. That game will most likely be pretty cool.

I'd probably enjoy seeing an enhanced version of MotM for GBA, perhaps with some of the Chaos guys included drool_2
