It's not much, but I thought I'd post it anyway. Heres my email:

"Hello, my name is Lee and I run a site dedicated to Neo Geo and SNK as I am a HUGE fan of 2D arcade art and games.

First off, thank you for producing KOF2001, looking forward to playing it.

I also wanted to know about your companies roll in the demise of SNK under Aruze, specifically, do you intend to continue support for the MVS hardware?

Rumours are circulating that Mr. Kawasaki (formerly of SNK) and former SNK artists have re-grouped with your company and have posession of the rights to such wonderful franchises as King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury, and Last Blade - is this true? In your opinion, what does the future hold for the SNK 2D tradition and the Neo Geo hardware?

Thank you very much for your time, and any response is GREATLY appreciated.

Lee"

Heres the response:

"Dear Sir,

Thank you for your Email.

First of all, we are not in the position to say anything about SNK's
problem.
We are just a developer, and we just finished developping KOF2001.
That's all we can say to the public.

Best regards,
BrezzaSoft Corporation"

Hmmmm, kind of short and to the point, but makes me curious what they 'can't' say to the public.

Good work Lee.

I wouldn't get automatically excited though...I've had to sign several NDA's about the most boring shit imaginable.

Yep...I'm legally bound to NOT discuss things that I probably would never mention to anyone because no one else cares .

Nice to see you opening up some communication though. Well done !

First off, I think that Brezzasoft did have something to do with the demise of SNK, or at least had knowledge of it for some time. First, Crystal of Kings is announced as a Neo Geo title, only to be corrected by Brezza as not being a MVS title. Crystal of Kings is being developed on a cartridge based platform that has been very secretive and not officially announced by Brezzasoft, although many "speculate" an ign board. Brezzasoft is being distributed by Apple industries--the US distributor of MVS titles. The president of Apple Industries has announced on several occasions when rumors of KOF 2001 being the last MVS title that Apple would continue to distribute several SNK Neo Geo titles after Zupapa and "another SNK product". It seems that Apple has some inside info as to what will happen after SNK demise, probably based on its relationship with Brezzasoft as a distributor. To me, it seems that this mysterious new cartridge based board may be a new "MVS" type board that will accommodate a new generation of SNK titles--therefore being secretive until the SNK ordeal is final. That would explain Apple Industries ability to guarantee future SNK/Neo Geo games and product. Otherwise with the uncertain future of licenses, you would think that they could not make such a statement. This may be reading between the lines, but it all seems to line-up fairly nicely for a Brezzasoft take over of SNK franchises and possible new releases of Neo geo titles on a new Brezzasoft arcade board--and the relationship with Apple and Hyperware to release the Ultracade Neo Geo set-up. There is no proof of any of this, but just seems likely with the conditions that are present.

NO!!

NO NEW PROPRIETARY HARDWARE!!

That's a sure way to bleed cash and die. Look at the Dreamcast. Look at the Hyper 64 and NGP. Look at the damn Neo for god's sake.

They want to keep developing for the MVS, well, that's not that smart since all those games will eventually get cracked and emulated, and though you might argue that emulation didn't affect MVS/AES sales, you can bet your ass that it will affect more reasonably priced console port sales. However, the devs at least know the MVS hardware extremely well, and could turn out games for it with relative ease, relatively quickly, and outside the cost of manufacturing those big, clunky carts, relatively cheaply, and can go through the same distribution channels they've already established over the years. Brezza is sticking to the MVS right now to make the most of these existing assets, which is smart, but they shouldn't stick with the MVS forever.

If they develop new hardware, that's time and money they're NOT spending on making and selling good games, which is what they need to do right now to get solid footing. There are already lots of perfectly good arcade platforms out there like NAOMI and Namco's System-12/14 series boards; SNK/Brezza/whoever should be using those, not developing its own platform.

For clarification's sake, WE DON'T WANT A NEW PLATFORM. I guarantee you, it'll be a failure. A miserable one.

I bet the only "other" hardware being marketed are the neo photostand machines.

Hey, great job Lee!

While their response is not really definitive (as Blaine said), it's certainly more hope than we had before.

Let's just keep our fingers crossed that the MVS will continue to live on! I, for one, think it's still a valuable commodity in many of the South American and Far Eastern countries, where inexpensive arcade games/carts are still as popular (with both arcade ops AND players) as ever!
