With the bad news, there is good news. We all know that the courts decided on "SNK's" demise and it still remains as such. In the past few days, however, the rights to Neo Geo's products was auctioned off to the highest bidder and to some people's surprise, Capcom was one of them. Fortunately or unfortunately, Capcom lost the bid to the Neo Geo rights.
For those wondering what's going to happen to SNK, well, they are dead....sort of. Who ever takes over the Neo Geo rights, cannot use the "SNK" name, nor would they want to . To use the "SNK" trademark, you would also have to assume all their debts, so the way around this is to establish a brand new company using a different title, yet be able to produce games for Neo Geo. That is the path that Mr. Kawasaki is taking now. I cannot name the winning bidder, but let's just say that Mr. Kawasaki is related to that person. He was not allowed to put in a bid for his own rights, so he had someone else bid for him.
As for the name of the company, it is still confidential, but I am sure some of you out there have heard of it already.
Will there continue to be more Neo games? You bet, at least for the MVS market. As with the home market, each new title's release is on a per game basis, dependent on how popular the title is and what demand we show. There is no doubt that Shawn and his Neo-Geo.com site poses heavy influence on future home releases, so it's up to us members to promote the home market.
The U.S. "Neo" office will still be operational; however, I have not heard news if Apple Photo will continue to distribute games for the MVS market. Obviously, there will be operational changes and the future MVS releases remain uncertain in terms of names of titles, but there will be at least 4 titles after KOF 2001 to be released.
