Meaning that the police can tap your phone lines and read private e-mail.

Is this going too far?

Some aspects I agree with, others I do not. For instance, if I recall correctly, under current Federal WireTap Law, they have to get a Warrant for each phone line they want to tap. Say Joe Pettythief's phone number is (123) 456-7890. They get a Warrant for a WireTap on that number. Joe gets wise, and has the phone company change his number to (123) 456-8907. The Feds now have to go get a whole new Warrant. I agree with the aspect of covering all communication mediums under a single warrant, and allowing them to simply change the WireTap if Joe Pettythief should change his phone number.

I have not as yet read the entire Bill, though. I will have to see what has changed since the earlier versions.

So very true Bio Motor, but this law will focus on all people from the Middle East and will have Arab people scutinized during this publicity "War on Terrorism".

Althought I hate this new law, I will condone it!

Well, the situation needs something strong to be done against terrorists. I don't wanna open my copy of Sengoku 3 with metal gloves just 'cause 'maybe' it was touched by anthrax spores while in the mail storage

Yeah, well since no one really reads the news anymore, most Americans didn't know it was happening. Its scary what the cops can get away with now.

As for all this horrible stuff going on with Anthrax, I have a sneaking suspicion its some opportunist in America doing something.

(the media starts mentioning Anthrax as a possible weapon and, boom, we actually start seeing Anthrax? Sounds like they gave somebody an idea)

Jumping back to the bill, it has been watered down a bit since Ashcroft entered it (in its original state it was "let's turn the FBI into the SS plan") -Needless to say, Conservatives, Liberals, Libratarians, and other civil rights advocates in the House flipped until it was changed a bit.

Bobak, I totally agree. It seems that 'SOMETIMES' the media has quite a big mouth. "kids are making car bombs out of ping-pong balls, and bird shit!! We`ll show You how...tonight at 11"!
It DOES seem like quite a coinc., huh ??

TERRORISM DEFINITION: The use of force or threats to frighten people and cause them to obey, esp. by a government or political group.
This can be found in a Webster's dictionary.

We are in a war on terrorism? YES.

I totally agree. The media was already talking about bioterrorism before the anthrax letters. They somewhat indirectly contributed to the problem.

The Anti-Terroist act is a scare tactic. Certian ethnic groups will be targeted, and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

I agree with you, Bobak! Everything was fine until the media mentioned Biological warefare, and now letters tainted with the Anthrax virus are showing up in almost every major city.

Freedom with some exceptions?

I'm not so sure, letters have been found containing anthrax were postmarked Sep 11. Granted if you have a post mark machine,... but wait the post office isn't supposed to send out mail if it is post marked at an earlier date. Well who knows?? And why did a letter end up in Kenya?

Bobak! is totally right about this.

It's almost Orwellian.

All this terrorist stuff reminds me of the Salem Witch trials, or 50's Mcarthyism (stamping out communists).

History repeats itself.
It's almost like it is by design...

email/phone taps isn't going too far.

Obviouslt I'd rather not have it, but for those who have nothing to hide (ie not a terrorist/criminal/whatever) then I guess it's ok.

So what if someone reads a personal email to a woman who isn't my wife... They don;t know me/her/wife. It means nothing to them.

If you disagress with it then you're either a left wing mincer or have something to hide.

what an ignorant statement... You've not only made an unsound arguement, but at the same time insulted those who disagree with you.

It goes earlier than that During WWII the Nazi party tapped all phones to listen in on any dicussion that sounded of treason.

I'm not for this, but if there are results for this "screening" then I'll improve. They said the same about metal detectors and bomb sniffin dog but still three plane were hijacked.

Just another example of our typical big brother government. They use a situation where the American people have been taken advantage of or hurt to take advantage of us even more. WTF?!?!!?!? Just another example of one of the many illegal things our big brother government is doing. Don't get me started on this one. I will never shut up.

Maybe...but how can you possibly avoid it, you know? The flip side is "Why didn't anybody warn us?"

Privacy is the united states biggest illusion. Every single person here who thinks that they were not listening to us, and taping us already is as naive as the day they were born. Talk to our friends at the NSA and the CIA about Echelon. Everything we say, email, and fax goes through it. You are complaining about the wrong thing. Everybody just knows about this one, so they think their civil rights are being violated.

What in gods name do you think that a country like the united states, as corrupt as it is, would wait for the permission of people who cannot even standardize math requirements, to agree what they want to expose to the government? I guarentee you you have been monitored at least once in your life. England, you too, along with France, Ireland, Spain, and Italy. All of your governments are in agreement with ours to trade info ont the citizens they "can't" watch.

Wake up.

Every single person here owes it to themselves to read at least 2 of these links. Be informed.

Hooray! I love having my rights taken away. Long live police states!

And if you couldn't pick up the sarcasm in the above statement, then you are indeed a moron. Do we really need laws and bills to fight terrorism? America exploits its own stupidity once again. That's what happens when you let some fuckwits dumb down everything.

People's Rights have always and will continue to be VIOLATED..
stripping you of these RIGHTS basically means VIOLATION with NO COMPENSATION.
Invites ABUSE OF POWER and opens the door for more RIGHTS to be taken away........
