NAME: The DOJO

BUISNESS PHILOSPHY: We at the dojo want to provide the gamer and consumer with the best possible gaming environments imaginable. The dojo’s philosophy is “THE ARCADE RUN BY A GAMER FOR THE GAMERS”. We feel that the gamers are what make the arcade and not the arcade making the gamers. The Dojo stresses that we want the gamers and anyone to know, when they step into the DOJO there stepping into a CLEAN, SAFE, FUN, and POSITIVE environment.

OPENING DATE FRIDAY MAY 31, 2001

LOCATION: The DOJO is currently located on 11th Ave in Wailae. We are next to the Pill Box Pharmacy and connected with the Yoga fitness center.

I will have a total of 11 machines though so there won’t be much swapping on each game. Mostly each title or genre will get 2-3 machines. So classic fighters will have 4 machines, walk thru 4, and others will be 3. Marquees will have there own dedicated cabinet.

Events:

1. To run weekly tournaments for Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom vs. Snk 2, King of fighters 2001 and DANCE DANCE REVOLTION 7th mix. The tourneys would be a way to thank the players for there patronage of our gaming establishment.

2. Having outside competivley ranked players in Marvel V.S Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. Snk 2 fly down to compete in local Hawaii tourneys.

3. Weekly and Monthly prize give away. Gaming memorabilia such as marquees and wall scrolls and posters and books.

COMPANYS VISION:

1. The addition of LAN gaming to our arcade. Having multiple dedicated computers connected together for quality land gaming to enhance and further upgrade the gaming environment.
2. To create organized leagues for different game genres. By introducing an infrastructure to make gaming more beneficial to the consumer.
3. Televisions in the arcade so gamers can be up to date and watch there current shows with out ever having to leave the arcade. Also to be able sporting events and the arcade at the same time.
4. The additions of Japanese based game cabinets. Something that we feel the players would enjoy greatly in the island of Hawaii.

Sounds pretty cool.

Not being a huge Arcade industry guy, take my advice at face value only, I'd suggest getting some redemption games as well. It's hard to structure that with your free play system.

Maybe admission gets you in but also gets you 10 free tokens and have one or two change machines that accepts bills to pump out more tokens, you could also probably set those higher too, say 6 tokens for a dollar to really offset the admission for people who want to use the redemption machines (2 tokens doesn't seem like a lot, but that's 30 tokens for 5 bucks, which is 50% free.)

I just know that a lot of people who go to arcades sometimes have people with them (i.e. girlfriends, younger siblings...) who don't necessarily want to play video games.

Some Skee Ball would help that out.

Just a thought.

OH! One more thing, you have the power to make it happen:

How about a cab running ESPrade or Dimahoo?

I have no doubt there are some shooter fanatics in the great state of Hawaii.

Sounds good, I especially like the free play idea with a cover charge at the door. Although you may have problems with some people deciding they can hog a machine for the entire day because they wont have a limit to the number of times they can afford to play.

PS: Dance Dance Revolution 7? <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

You will only have 11 machines running, or did I miss something? Are the 11 machines set aside for the non-dedicated titles?

The only drawback to unlimited free plays would be once you've beaten a game, you might not play it again.

Many of you games have good replay value, but I'd still be wary of this.

Other than that, looks like you have a good location, and a great idea!

Best of luck, and If I ever make it out there for a vacation, I'll have to pop by (my girlfriend wouldn't be impressed, but them's the breaks :) ).

One drawback of the "free play" system, is that people might hog the machines. There would be no such thing as putting your quarter down.

So that's why you posted that "What would you name your arcade" (or something similar) thread.

Well good luck~!

I've spoken with an arcade operator here about opening up a nickel or dime arcade. I know I'd go play tons of neo for five or ten cents. He's got tons of Pac-Man, galaga and other old school titles along with Neo. I don't know if it would pull in the older crowd for anything longer than the nostalgic walk down memory lane.

Pretty sweet setup you got there. Wish someone would open up an arcade like that where I live, it would be my second home.

I think this sounds like a great idea, but many games would get simply walked through and likely never played again. You're going to need to keep getting in cutting edge games to keep people coming back, something that local arcades in my area have neglected to do, enevitably causing their downfall.

On the other hand, you could be onto something big if you play your cards right, as a place like that is unheard of (around here anyway) and would make an awesome hangout for kids and adolescents.
It'd be a great place to make friends of all ages and a great outlet to help keep bored kids out of trouble.

You may want to think about adding a sectioned off food and beverage area, since people spending all that time playing games are going to get hungry and thirtsy sooner or later. You could make some serious loot on hot dogs and other junk food.

All in all, I think it's a great idea...maybe have a free TV area for parents/girlfriends or other unwilling victims who've been dragged to your arcade.

Good luck with it, and let us know how everything turns out!

Here in hawaii people use the organized line system. It works rather well and i plan to invoke a order system if i notice a problem.

Yes thats why i posted what would u name a arcade thread.

Yea i considered this greatly. I been careful with my selection and am picking out games with cult followings and good replay valure added into it.

yea i have a good supply of games i havent listed and plan to cater to them when the new big titles come out.

Yeah thats the idea i want a hangout for kids, teenagers, parents and kids. Its a fresh new idea and i think it could really work.

The long term goal is to have a snack bar most definaley i see it as added revenue.

Judging by the responses in this thread I would most definatley know the arcade can work.

I am far from an expert in the coin-op business.

-Implementing that line system is key. Everyone needs an equal chance to play games.

-Looks like many of the games there won't suffer from the I-beat-it-once-and-won't-play-it-again-syndrome. Good job, and good selection.

-I know this place is geared toward hardcore gamers and competitive play, but don't alienate the "casual" gamers. You could be missing out on some extra bucks. Implement tokens into the plan for those who only wish to play a few games. Also include classics like Galaxian, Pac-man, Joust, Dig Dug to draw the casual gamers in. This also fits with your idea of "gamers on a budget."

Sounds great. Good luck with you vision. Post pix of your place when you get it running!
