i was browsing the game faq's message boards and look at a post i found:

"Hmm... I thought Metal Slug was made by Sony... or at least MS1 was made in conjuction with."

i just have to say that he is one fucking dumbass

Nah, Atari made Metal Slug. You can see the distinct resemblance to the tanks in the classic Atari game, "Combat."
