Hello neo-geo.com members. We will be going dedicated in the very near future, next week sometime. For the last 1.5 years this site has been under shared hosting, also known as virtual hosting. Our current server is a dual 900 mhz running Windows 2000, only we share this server with 250 other websites. The hosting service, Hostway.com, was not willing to allocate 2 GB for a shared site. They also suspect that we are using a lot of bandwidth. J We will be forced to upgrade to dedicated hosting.

The new dedicated server will be powered by dual Pentium 1ghz processors, have an 18 GB SCSI hard drive, & 256 MB of memory. This server is superior to the previous one, and best of all, it will be dedicated strictly to one site, neo-geo.com. Major overkill for web hosting, but we should experience stellar server performance. Also our disk space limit will be increased from 300 MB to 18 GB. Potentially supporting a million posts with plenty of room to spare. Course we don’t want junk, so we will continue to clean the spam. The bandwidth limit will be increased from 12 GB per month to 50 GB. Not sure if this is enough, since we were averaging 30 GB per month and orochinagi.com was experiencing 30 GB as well. Course additional bandwidth can easily be purchased. Anyone know why hosting services rape you for hardware upgrades? To go from a single 500mzh cpu to a 800 mhz cpu was an extra $400 per month! I’m talking a recurring fee of $400, not a one-time fee, doesn’t make any sense. To save on the hosting fee I will purchase the server and pay in advance for one year of dedicated hosting.

We will probably go back to UNIX, since I’m sick and tired of playing email tag with tech support to set the correct permissions, etc. Besides, Unix is more stable, so less downtime. Initially we may experience downtime again as I transfer the 1 GB site to our new server. Neo-Geo.com is like a fish that keeps outgrowing it’s bowl. This will be our 3rd server change, but definitely the last for a very long time now that we will have room to grow. This will also be a good time to upgrade our board. Will either go with vBulletin like SRK.com uses, or ubb version 6.0. If you have a preference on what board to go with, let me know.

That's cool. It's nice to know how servers work.
You're one dedicated person. My thanks to you.

As for which board to choose, whichever one is fine with me.

Y'know, for a guy that does this as a fan, you sure do put a lot of effort into making this board better than it has to be, Shawn. I know that the Neo Geo store is also hosted on this site and that is a revenue generator for you, but I would hazard to say that what you spend on bandwidth and upgrades is not covered by your sales (at least at this point). And that's not a slam on the store by any stretch. Just that I am guessing that the cost running this board with the traffic that it has is probably in the thousands each and every month.

For a guy that takes a lot of heat, especially as of late, you seem to really put forth your best effort to give us idiots the luxury of calling you a sell out.

The only thing you've sold is your reason (which I applaud, BTW), in that you have tirelessly worked toward providing a forum that is second to none on the net for a dying game platform. Not many folks would put in the work, dedication and not insigificantly, the MONEY to keep this whole train rolling. We should certainly thank you for that as all Neo fans, by definition, are nuts!

Y'know, once upon a time, there were these guys that wanted to write themselves into Neo Geo history. They're in, but in a Hitler'esque kind of way. I think that perhaps you're on your way to writing a pretty good, and hopefully large chapter for yourself, Shawn. And you're not the bad guy in your chapter.

It looks to me that, in the long run, the OrochiNagi joining us could not have been at a better time. We're a dying breed folks. Shawn's maintaining a top notch area for us to meet, chat, bitch and be creative. I am certainly thankful for that.

They might do it because most of their big hosting contracts are probably from companies that do not bother breaking down the cost of such a thing, they just sign the P.O. Ridiculous to have such a recurring cost for such an upgrade. Offer to buy them a better processor to install in the machine your site is hosted on, instead.

Shawn, I'll recommend UBB 6 all the way.

One thing I love in it is the Instant Graemlins panel. The Wordlets system in it is cool as well- you can change wordings on things. One new feature in 6 is the cache system.

That ubbdev.com site's got quite a handful of good UBB 6 modifications now available.
