Just how is this GETTING SO GAY?

Stop the negativity...yeah, whatever...

Maybe I am the only one on this message board who gives a shit about this topic, but all of this homophobic rhetoric is completely unacceptable.

Caris, you and others are used to making references to homosexuals and homosexuality in a negative context because they are such an easy target.

It is just too easy to call someone a fag or refer to bad = gay, isn't it? Why don't you challenge yourself and find a different choice of words to voice your frustrations?

It is so awful that homosexuals around the world face daily harassment and sometimes death to be who they truely are, and too few speak out against it because it is a topic that is of great taboo due to so many people (particularily americans) facing insecurities about their own sexuality.

Overall, I have been quite dismayed with the negative tone towards homosexuality that many members of this board convey, and I would like to conclude with some counter arguments to all of your posts:

1. Homosexuality is not a deserving scapegoat.

2. Homosexuality is not Neo Geo Freak.

3. Gay DOES NOT equal Bad.

Yes gay does mean happy, but when was the last time you heard anyone use it for that meaning? Think about it...

16 has valid points and his concerns are understandable. I dont know if Caris ment by Gay = bad, as meaning gay people are bad. I myself will refer to things as being gay, or call a friend a fag, but it in no way in my mind registers as putting down gay people. Although, when you think about it, it really does. It's a bad habit and you dont think that it can actually offend people. I dont know, I respect 16's beliefs, I know maybe I should think before I say shit myself.

I dont know if people know this, but Carlson is a great fucking Neo seller and deserves respect from the community. I have bought many games from him and will continue to do so...

You have a very valid point Carlson, and I can see where you're coming from, but with all due respect I can't agree with you. Refering to something as gay when you think it's bad/offensive/disgusting/etc is nowhere in the same ball park as being homophobic.

The thought of what homosexuals do behind closed doors, while it may be what they choose to do, usually turns the stomach of heterosexuals. Does this automatically mean they need their heads caved in with baseball bats because what they do to each other disgusts other people? Not at all. However when straight folks resort to attacking homosexuals on that basis alone, then and only then it becomes homophobic.

Don't get me wrong, that's not okaying insulting and spitting at or anything else that is reasonably nonviolent done to homosexuals. But let's face it, I find what homosexuals do disgusting, a lot of hetero people do. That doesn't mean that I hate the gay people for it, just so long as they keep it behind closed doors and don't go parading it around me.

Respectfully, when I'm out with a girl, making out in public is out of the question. You're supposed to outgrow this "who cares who see's us?" mentality in jr high, so that aspect applies to anybody and everybody.

There are a lot of productive citizens in the world that are gay. One of my favorite comic book artists (Howard Cruise) is a gay rights advocate. Bashing gay people in general is nothing more than another prejudice. But refering to something as gay is hardly bashing the people. It's just a word. I think American society would be a lot better off if people stopped worrying about "hateful language" and worried more about the people using this language.

Just my two cents...

well i kinda agree with
N-T-M
i feel bad admiting it but
i usually use slurs in my conversation
quite a bit.. its almost in there as much
as my bad sailor swearing talk..
i know its a very bad habit and
something i will have to watch so as not
to offend actual decent people..
i know homosexual people are not
bad.. i used to work in fast food with
some one who happened to be gay..
he was one of the most pleasent people you
would ever know ..and someone
i would gladly acknoweldge as
a friend ..
they can often be more better social people
than alot of straight people
but the slurs are still there
its just a bad habit for me..
and i know it is for alot of other people too
it just happens to be the result of
"care"less people.. im not apoligizing for the
rest of the population but change starts
with one person at a time,
me included..

Lou,

Thanks for your reply.
Here is the definition of homophobia according to dicitonary.com:

1.Aversion to gay or homosexual people or their lifestyle or culture.
2. Behavior or an act based on this aversion.

You are uncomfortable with homosexuality - that's fine! Personally, I have no problem with anyone being averse to anything homosexual or homosexually related. Listen Lou, I encourage you to stick to your values

But using "gay" in the context of "shithole" in a public forum is taking this aversion to another level. An inappropriate one in my opinion.

At the end of the day, this is mostly about respect for others, and it has little (if anything) to do with homosexuality. Try this: subsitute a racial slur in the place of the typical gay, homo, or fag line that it is posted on the message board, and then see what happens. Would you not be considered racist in this instance? Would it be seen as appropriate?

The only thing of relevance I have to say about this topic (At least I think it's relevant)...

Since we seem to be speaking about homosexuality in general now, is that if it weren't for gay people our already crappy culture would be so drab and boring I would have to surround myself with day-glow neon colors just to keep from passing out.

A really sizeable chunk of our art and music comes from our gay friends.

Besides, speaking as a straight man, the more gay guys the better....
...So much less competition for the ladies!

Let's test that out, shall we: what about lesbians? How many people here will claim to be averse to homosexuality, yet will freely participate in watching lesbian encounters in pornographic material or real life (for the lucky/wild ones)? How many of these same people will fantasize about lesbianism or participating in a three-some as long as it involves two females? I must admit that I adopt a "one dick per fantasy rule", but that is strictly because of my preference for females.

I must agree with Carlson's remarks in terms of word usage. If a racial slur was instituted into any post (i.e. quit acting like a fucking kike), it would immediately be viewed with utter animosity. However, people freely unite in homophobic slurs as a way of justifying their own masculinity.

Sincerely,

Mikhail

EDIT: This pertains to a visual misinterpretation of Silent Scope's signature. At first, I thought the background said Arian Pryde (as in Aryan Pryde). Then, I noticed that it says Asian Pryde. However, I wonder if the message indicated by this signature is any different that what I mistakenly assumed it to mean in the first place?

<Shrug> It's a known fact that most great art has come from deeply unhappy people. Most gay people have been, historically (and ironically) deeply unhappy... hence the huge amount of art that comes out of gay culture.

kiselgof, your enquiry is flawed as it implies that girl-on-girl sex is a turn on... hence, one can tell that you're pitching this question to either a heterosexual male. What do you think your average heterosexual female gets out of lesbian fantasies?

With so much reading in both sides, Id like to say that Shawn's site could benifit from this overall. This is now one of the largest Neo Geo Related Sites on the Net with more Neo Geo Fans masses in one aera and able to speak with each other about this love of SNK's wonder machine.*heh* In general I don't approve of what all is going on but, I expect it to tone down once people start realizing they all like the same things in general. Until then, Let the mindless flames resume....

I know you're trying to say the right thing, but it comes off really bad.

If I used your logic, I could use "towelhead" as an adjective and it would be 'OK.'

16-bit, I've voiced my concern about the homophobic remarks over at the Yahoo Club a few years back and it never got anywhere. Some people are immature. They can't understand those that they don't know or have contact with (or they're Jr. High School boys).

If Caris and others actually talk like that in the real world (and expect to get into any position of power or authority) -oh, ho! Think again. But sometimes it takes time to change peoples minds.

neobuyer, afriad I don't ICQ much... I have an account, but I usually keep true to my name and lay low, springing up and shocking people when they put their DND signs on...

zy-, yeah this is serious topic drift... it'll probably get moved elsewhere. But as Kriz said, for the most part it's NG folk taking part in this thread. And yes, you can ban a person's ISP, but that's just being assholic to anyone else who might share the same ISP as the person you want to ban. And, most IP numbers are dynamic (because most ISPs are control freaks) and so, you can't ban on IP either.
