Shortage of Capcom vs SNK 2

In what has to be seen as a concerning situation, Capcom’s USA office is in the position of having what many feel are two of the most desirable releases in the amusement sector, but is unable to sell them themselves! Industry sources have revealed that Capcom needs to find outside manufacturers to actually sell their games in the States!

The amusement satellite distribution and sales divisions have found themselves less than well served regarding information concerning the Japanese head office's future plans. It is fair to say the internet and BBS sites have revealed more of the Capcom coin-op R&D team’s current enterprises than executives in certain offices were aware. The depletion of the Capcom amusement offices, now supported jointly by the offices already focused on the more profitable consumer releases, has confounded the situation. Capcom U.S. has been unable to jump into action regarding the games and has passed on the responsibility of starting U.S. location tests, painfully clear that they could be easily overwhelmed by actual market interest needing a helping hand.

What has been revealed by a number of agitated American operators and sources is that the immanent release of Capcom vs. SNK 2 will have a production way below the numbers that will be needed to support all of the operators wanting to get their hands on the game, as Capcom U.S. offers minimal staff to support the effort. Regarding Gun Survivor 2: Biohazard Code Veronica, the prognosis looks worse with the game actually bypassing the U.S. due to indifference within Capcom unless a "sugar daddy" can be found. The situation seems to stem from the neglect that the coin-op division within the predominately console fixated facility has suffered.

In the time remaining before the games are officially released, a panic has swept certain U.S. operators regarding how they can get their hands on one of the three "hot-ticket" fighting games to hit the arcades. It is surprising that these games, via Internet coverage, have achieved a surge of interest amongst fighting coin-op fans. This interest has been missed completely by the executives at the American offices. These same executives were privately caught by surprise when the beta version of Capcom vs. SNK 2 commanded strong attention in their booth at E3. Though they were familiar with the game, salivating at the prospects of the PS2 release, the continuing support of an amusement route was alien to many originating from a console software development background.

It was privately assumed that Capcom would capitalize on a favored route similar to their European division and save the situation at the last minute. The Capcom Germany offices have continued to support arcade investment while the States have declined and orchestrated the company's "farming-out" of amusement development. Sources finally revealed during the last days of June that SEGA America would in fact take charge of CvS2's distribution and support.

However, the complexity of the Biohazard shooting cabinet could lead to a different option. Namco's American satellite could add the gun game to their line-up, similar to the agreement that Gaelco has with the Japanese giant. No confirmation from either party concerning this possibility was available at the time of writing this story.

For the operator, they are less worried about who distributes the game as long as they can profit from the release within their facilities. SEGA Europe has already made it clear that they will be relying on more third party manufacturing, using the French mega distributor and manufacturer Avranches Automatics S.A., to handle a percentage of their expected machine runs. A similar situation exists with Konami, and even Taito, who has actively sought support of their Stunt Typhoon Plus driving game outside Japan, with cabinets already turning up in England, manufactured by a third party, while the USA is left out regarding this interesting driver.

At a time when amusement seems to be hot news (those once writing the market off as dead are now filling articles with CvS2, Tekken 4 and Virtua Fighter 4 news) attempting to redefine its new shape, the supportive relationships between the remaining Japanese amusement manufacturers are becoming a common factor in the mix. This even more important due to the interest for the latest releases from these manufacturers. <IMG SRC="smilies/veryangry.gif" border="0">

Very interesting article, mvsholic. Sad, but it seems like now the writing is on the wall for arcade games, the decline is inevitable. Even successful games aren't given the time of day by their developers, and everyone seems to have written off the market. I try to do my part, supporting a small local arcade operator, but the end is inevitable. In my mind, all that can be done now is for us, the home arcade collectors (I know you're a heavy one), to buy and preserve these games and cabinets for the future. Otherwise, they'll all sooner or later end up in a trash dump, neglected and forgotten. <IMG SRC="smilies/crying.gif" border="0">

I wish there was a "Shortage" of ugly pixals in the game, come on capcom! lol

Ive seen videos and pics, and its the same god awful dirty pixals the first one had.

The only reason i'm getting it is Haohmaru and Eagle.

From what I hear, the CvS2 beta unit was getting far more attention then the VF4 machine. The 2d fighter may crawl back to the top after all <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

As far as the pixels in CvS, they do look kind of shamby next to the Street fighter III stuff, but then again non of the snk characters are in SF3 <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> So I guess there balance.

I honestly could give a shit less.
Take a look at the first, this series was shit from day one.
Why start a series off so shamefully?
It was never meant to be, and I could care less either way.
I am waiting for KOF2K1 a game of which I can relate.

P.S. I know you didn't just say VF series is shit? It's probly one of the most realistic fighting games ever, since they use actual martial art styles and for the most part real moves (Except the Matrix style jumps in 1-3, lol)

Oh I know why you don't like it krauser, cause it isn't on PSX, so you can't rent it from blockbuster and burn it, cause you know the only NEO games you own is shit you rented from BB <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

The most realistic fighting game by far is Ultimate FIghting Championship for Dreamcast and Playstation. It has real fighters with real styles, doing real moves. Grappling is a big factor unlike many fighting games.

I enjoy the game quite a bit. Has anyone else played it?

What worries me most about this shortage is the long term effects. Less titles availble to distributors means that they will hold on to their older games, which means less titles availible for arcade collectors. What is availible at that time will be very expensive. Just as in the case of the pinball machine.

The arcades aren't going anywhere. Most of them are ending up in the basements of america. You'll still find an arcade here and there, however most will reside in private collections. The arcade business needs what is refered to as a killer app. Something to bring the masses in. It's possible that one of these three titles is it, however I believe that it will take more than a general rehash of old ideas to make it happen. Even Gameworks is having trouble: http://www.eventgaming.com/stingerreport/4.html

I didn't care much for 1 player UFC. Haven't tried 2 player yet.

MVSHolic- I saw the bit in that article about game centers within cinemas.

From Event Gaming's Stinger Report:
"In America, the group is moving from competing in the video entertainment, restaurant and bar sector to that of cinema sites, proposing a chain of facilities based inside multiplex cinemas."

Ouch. This doesn't bode well for Game Works. Personally, I think GW needs to cut prices and diversify their game lineup a tad more. I've yet to see a Planet Harriers or a Neo-Geo at GW.

Yeah CVSS2 is crap in my opinion, SNK plauys no major role in the game whatsoever, and lets just say characters do not feel the same, CVSS2 is already looking like the first.
Not my forte....

Jackal - Diversification will work only with a distinctive title. Otherwise they are the same as every other arcade. Something along the lines of... Exclusive rights to Virtua Fighter 4 for a year. Something to draw in the masses and divsersivication to make them stay. I'm not talking chucky cheese here. They need a killer app. You're right. It does not bode well for Gameworks.

If all else fails it'll make for one great arcade auction. <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

I'm glad to see some people who aren't actually going "ga ga" over this game. Personally I feel way too many sites overhype this game. In my personal opinion, Capcom vs SNK 1 was absolute crap. The graphics in it were pixelated, it used Naomi graphics instead of hand drawn effects which I HATE and look ugly. It used improper lighting also. The overall animation sucked (Judging from the DC version) and even the gameplay was terrible. Street Fighter 3 was almost perfect, the resoultion could use some tuning but the animation in it was superb. Although it was lacking in gameplay as well, SF continues to remain litterally a Punch and Kick game. No real combo chaining and it's specials have that "shadow" effect which has been used years ago, can't they think up of anything new? Also, i'm not too happy about the KOF series either, KOF'96 was quite good, but after that the game continued to decline. All KOF has is more characters. Big deal, the animation has been cut down so much for the amount of characters that it looks ugly now. Guilty Gear X looked like it had potential as well, except that the high resoultion frames took up too much ram and they couldn't make any good animation, I don't know if htis is different in the arcade, but the DC version almost has less animation than a KOF game, GGX also had some gameplay issues also. I mean, you can do a special in a round within 30 seconds and the special kills instantly. One game I DO prefer is Mark of the Wolves on Neo Geo. The animation is perfect, the gameplay is quite good, and the specials animated extremely well. Although it's combo system isnt quite great, it's still very good. A combo system I would prefer is like the one MvsC has. It's sorta funny that game companies keep churning out crappy 2d fighters so often, especially capcom. What will it take for them to actually put some effort into a 2d fighter?
