Finally, somebody that's interested in high scores on these games.
Okay. First of all, you said you take the "Sea" route for both halves... I assume you mean Valley. Valley is good for the 2nd half, but for the first, Jungle is WAY better. On the first three stages of Jungle alone, it's possible to get 13 or 14 million. And more importantly, when you switch routes from Jungle to Valley, you can earn an extra 1.7 million or so on the Train stage. So you're already missing out on a million and a half points by picking the same route twice. The train stage only appears when you switch routes, and trust me - I have tested every route in this game point-wise, and Jungle is definitely best for the first three. Then after the switch, take Valley for the next two.
Now, what you're probably wondering is... where does the extra 10 million come from? For a long time I played the game, and my scores were consistently in the 18 to 19 million-point range. Then I found something out. If you wait around in certain areas, more enemies come out! Next time you play, pick Jungle as the first route (like I recommended above). After the first four soldiers drop down and the other two soldiers are surprised, you will see one working on a tank. When you reach this point, don't move forward! Just sit there for a couple seconds. About 5 or 6 soldiers will come in from the top of the screen. Now this is where things get tough - you have to figure out which areas in each level are the best parts to wait in (I call it "stalling"). A lot of it is trial and error, figuring out which areas are the best to wait around in. Believe it or not, I use the timer to the maximum on every level except the last one, sitting around waiting for more enemies!
Hmm... that might have been kinda confusing. It's hard to explain how exactly this works without seeing it in action. I'd mention emulators, but people around here get really uptight about that...
Shock Troopers 2nd Squad is pretty straightforward, yes. I hope you're taking the Naval Base/City route and not the Air Base/Train route. As for where the extra points come on that... well, like you said, as many close-range attacks as possible, although it's a lot riskier in this game. And of course, picking up the Gold for the 19990 bonus. On the "stats" at the end I usually have over 300 close-range attacks and over 100 of the 19990 Bonuses.
For squeezing out points... well, I hope you try to kill all the soldiers that come out of the truck at the end of Mission 1, and letting the first part blow up on its own. There's nearly 2 million points to be had there. Also, there's a part near the end on Mission 5 where an infinite amount of soldiers come out (albeit very slowly), and they can easily be dispatched with close-range attacks. You can spend a lot of time there building up points. It's pretty much the only area in the game where you can "stall" and leech points, but it doesn't work that well. Still, every little bit counts.
If you have any more questions, feel free to post! I love talking about this game, and have always wanted to share my "tricks of the trade" to someone who's interested in getting 20-million+ scores.
