Hi, I just wanted to let everyone know how the tournament went in Cincinnati on Sunday.
Let me personally thank Chris Thompson who organized the tournament for inviting myself and about 20 other people there. Chris is a great guy who didn't mind when I asked him to switch out the Hyper 64 system to the MVS back to the Hyper again. I'd also like to thank him for letting me play Garou: Mark of the Wolves for the very first time on his six slot.
All in all, we were not expecting a very big turnout. In fact, due the store's (Gamequest) small size, it would have been really bad if say 50 or more people shown up. The Tekken Tag tournament had 16 people in it. The matches were set up so you had to beat the other person in four rounds (or, two matches) to win. This ensured that the winner of both matches was truly the victor. Any character could be used and the time limit was set to infinite. First prize was $75 and a Gamequest discount card, second and third were just the discount card. Now, the matches...I must say, and I think I speak for all who were there, that the matches were EXTREMELY INTENSE!!! You would not believe how long some of the matches were!!! Several rounds lasted 5 minutes and, because of the two-match win rule, almost every match was deadlocked one to one. How did I do? I thought I did fairly well considering I hadn't played Tekken Tag in about three months. I placed third in the ranking. I can't remember who won the whole thing...but, I did fight the guy who won the tournament and our match was determined by a single move. Afterwards, he and I both agreed it could have gone either way. Both of us were very nervous and performed to the best of our abilities. After losing the match, he and I both shook hands...acknowledging that it was a fair..and close...fight. By the way, Chris got beat in the second round. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
While most everyone left after the tournament, Chris and I stayed behind and played Neo Geo until 11 at night. Let me say that I have FINALLY found someone who is better at fighting games than I am. In our matches at Garou: MOTW, I'd say I probably beat him twice out of 20 matches. This Sunday also marked the first time I have played the Neo Geo Hyper 64 system. The game I played the most on it was Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition, which, if you played the Playstation version, PALES IN COMPARISON to the Hyper 64 version. Punches hit harder, controll is easier, and it's just alot more fun. Anyway, thanks goes out to Chris again for staying up that late to play the Neo Geo games with me.
Some good news: Chris informed me that hopefully next month, he would organize another tournament. This time with more coverage and adverstising. If you are in Ohio and would like to join this potentially huge event...Chris and I would like your support. The more posts this topic gets, the more input we get, the better the next tournament will be. Chris hopes to have an exclusively Neo Geo tournament this time. The big players who live in Ohio (namely Jeff Kurtz and Tonk) are strongly urged to come and join the festivities. Shawn, I know you gave out gift certificates to the tournament (uh...should it have even been called that?) in Texas recently and I think that we should give some out as prizes at the next one Chris throws. Does that spark any interest?! Anyway, post away and give us some ideas! Any questions, please email me and I will pass your questions/suggestions along to Chris. Thanks!
