THIS GAME ROCKS THE HOUSE!

I got it today and I am amazed!

The combo system, the characters, the backgrounds oh-my!

One of the greatest neo games of all time, up there with Mark of the Wolves tied for first. (KOF 98 might have a slight edge on MOTW in my opinion)

I can see now why Fran calls KOF 2000 a circus...it seems that the game is more for show of many characters on screen at once than a hard core 2-D fighter like KOF 98 is.

Cheers to you Fran. Thanks for leading me to this game-

Wow, it took you this long to play 98? 98 is one of the best fighting games ever made, and not just for the Neo Geo!

KOF'98 is fine but by and large overrated, IMO.

97, 99, 2000, and (reserved for '01) on the other hand absolutely rule.

And I'll say a MotW and RBS rock like no other.

Overrated perhaps... but 99 blows(compared to its surrounding brothers 98&00)

Dood, no argument...98 owns.

There are bits and pieces of other KOF's that might be superior...Athena's OG Psycho tuneage, older BG's, the All Boss Team from '96...but for the best, most well-honed and balanced fighting King Of Fighters experience, there's only one choice....

THE KING OF FIGHTERS '98...THE SLUGFEST.

i find it rather odd that 8 different people reply, none of them being Fran.

9 including myself.

I still don't think this game really shines without friends over to play versus with you.

My own opinion. <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

yes and no. I think a good fighter allows for repeated solo play - not just for practice, but for the story to unravel. Remember Samurai Shodown 1, how good it was in versus, but then you could play by yourself and still be interested? As soon as I saw no endings in KoF 98, I thought, ah, only good for versus.

The feature i liked the most in KOF98:
You could get the 'classic' version of some of the characters, too!!

I always hated what they did to the AOF crew.....no Zanretsu-Ken anymore..and all the cut/off fireballs -great to get the old specials back!

If they only had included this in all the following KOF's! <IMG SRC="smilies/drool2.gif" border="0">

Why didn't they?
Why,why,why....!!! <IMG SRC="smilies/veryangry.gif" border="0">

'98's tops.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it, Mike.

And Fran, you're right.

'the people know'

Truer words have not been spoken.

Mike, did you get the limited edition artbook with the game or not? The artbook is really cool, a nice little collection piece to have. It came with a number of Japanese '98 carts, I believe, but my supplier was able to hook me up with one even though I have the US cart for '98.

Hold down start as you select the character. Not everyone has an alternate version, however. Check Gamefaqs for information regarding who does and who doesn't.

hahah.
i played the shit out of practice
in 98. fuk versus.
the chain combos were cool enough
to keep me occupied forever.
but then again it just makes versus that
much more fun.
and i just wanna get it off my chest but.
i cant play ss1.
the collision dectection is horrible.
talk about video game rage...
its terrible when you distintly cut someone
and the game doesnt "get" it.
the reason i play that game is for nostagia.
i d rather play ss3 or 4 personally..
