It says that there will only be 300 US Metal Slug 4 AES, but how many Jap versions are there? What do you think is the best to go for, Jap or US?

Actually, there'll be more than 300 English copies since NCS is offering English version as well. Based on the number of KOF 2001 sold (6000+), we may see MS4 produced in thousands.
As far as which version to go, it's up to you really. For players, it'll probably be US version since you can read the manual, I personally almost always get Jp version due to artwork of inserts.

But isn`t the artwork for MS4 almost identical between Jap and US? MS3 did not look very much different...

There will be only 300 English copies of MS4, worldwide. Check this link for details:

I'm guessing that NCS will obtain any English copies from the Neo Store, to fulfill English preorders. So if anyone wants the English version, they should just order directly from the Neo Store, since thats where they will all come from to begin with anyway.

There will be exactly 300 pieces produced of English Metal Slug 4 AES. So far, no retailers have purchased at this point (preorders just opened yesterday). Currently, NCS is not authorized to accept preorders for English Metal Slug 4 since they have not purchased any copies from the exclusive distributor yet. For English KoF ’01, they did not purchase until the week of release.
*Retailers must first satisfy purchasing requirements before accepting preorders of English Metal Slug 4.
The quantity of Japanese Metal Slug 4’s being produced will be > 300, most likely > 3000. Production is based on preorders, and preorders are still being accepted for the Japanese version from Sun Amusement & BrezzaSoft, and offered to all retailers/distributors worldwide.
