AMOA NEWS AND PICS,...YES, APPLE DID HAVE A SURPRISE!!

This was my first AMOA show and being the scrub I was, I expected more than what I saw; however, I had to search long and hard to find a good time and at the end of the show, I must say that I have a swell time.

I took a few photos for those hungry eyes of yours. Not much to see, but hey, some is better than none.

Pictures won't do any justice without commentary, so let me start with SNK, since we're all here for that. Yep, you guessed it, the only show at the "show" was Zupapa and an Ultracade version of the Neo Geo. For those interested, the "ultracade" Neo Version is not an official product and is not approved by SNK...yet. So don't throw out those MVS carts just yet. Also, keep in mind that encrypted carts will never see the light of day into this unit if it ever comes out. NO MS3, NITD, etc. No doubt, it was a very neat concept. What was interesting about it is that all the rare carts for the Neo, SDB, P N'B, TSS, NDO, and some others were all available on this system. Hmm, for collector's...hard drive or carts? Carts all the way. Nice for those who would like to just play the games though.

Zupapa, uh, sucks. Wait for the price to drop down to $50.00, trust me. Personal opinion. Don't want to get into it.

Alright, what we all thought we were waiting for, we didn't get...well, not really. No KOF 2001 as I expected. I forgot who I mentioned this to on the NEO-GEO.COM boards, but I was right about the "suprise" title. It's METAL SLUG 4. Yep, more awesome shooting action. It's been confirmed by Apple Photo Systems that it will be released February 2002. KOF 2001 is a no brainer and that game may stink when it comes out, who knows, but we all know that Metal Slug 4 is gonna rock. I can't be any happier.

To make up for the no show of KOF 2001, you all can see the pics of the Penthouse Pets. Gotta love it guys, Apple may not know games, but they have the chicks to replace them. I didn't mind. Got 2 free issues, (one of each girl).

To unrelated news, Capcom was a no show, Sega was definitely the most impressive at the show with CVS2, the awesome Virtua Tennis 2, now with Patrick Rafter and a group of top women Tennis players (Venus & Serena to name a few), World Series Baseball and their awesome Naomi Universal Cab. Look at that beautiful silver finish. Up 'til now, I have refrained from getting the Naomi based games in kit form, but with this universal cab out, I'm getting it for sure. What a beauty!!

Oh the game of the show has to be "Spanky." I forget the title of the game, but it's in one of the pics and the objective of the game is to "spank" your choice of characters (ex-girlfriend, best friend, ex-wife, etc) to a certain "pressure" level to match the meter on the screen. I didn't really understand it when the guy described it to me. All I did was hit the bull's eyed ass as hard as it could. Why not? It was my ex-girlfriend after all. Just remember guys, all girls like to be spanked, whether they're good or bad.

That's a wrap up. I'm beat.

Comments: MS4? Cool! <IMG SRC="smilies/glee.gif" border="0">

The spanky game is Boonga Boonga, a game from Japan. I noticed a sticker that says "Suitable for all ages." If you don't mind the expression, my thoughts on that are "All ages, my ass! <IMG SRC="smilies/glee.gif" border="0">"

And I distinctly hope KOF2001 doesn't suck. <IMG SRC="smilies/redface.gif" border="0">

Nice coverage. KOF2001 should of been there. I don't care if it's going to suck. However, KOF2001 gameplay suits newer KOF fans. Trust me, I know those Marvel vs Capcom 2 freaks will like to play KOF with supercancels, 3 striker infinite, etc...

I need KOF2001 so I won't be bored of seeing more Marvel vs Capcom 2 plays at my arcade. I wish I went to AMOA. <IMG SRC="smilies/crying.gif" border="0">

My buddy got hooked up with the International marketing director of SNK Japan and she's going to send him some flyers for MS4 (I would assume in the near future) when it is available. Of course, the friend that he is, he's giving it to me. His interest wasn't in Neo Geo when he was talking to her...uhem. Uh, if MS4 had a flyer, you know I would take a shot of it for you guys. C'mon they did make it up with the Penthouse Pets though. Geez, they know how to attract a crowd.

Oh, I met up with JASBOO (as you all know him on Neo-Geo.com and Ebay) and we were hogging the Neo Geo ultracade unit for quite a while playing some Baseball Stars 2. Who won? Uh, well, I want to be modest about it and I'll give it to Jasboo, I was playing a cheap team. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> Anyhow, the bottom line is that we had fun and he's such a swell person besides his great reputation as a seller. You guys should've seen the free food we were scavenging at the show. <IMG SRC="smilies/drool2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/drool2.gif" border="0">

As for KOF 2001, I talked to one of the reps and he claims that it is much better than 2000. He did admit that 2000 was a bucket, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

After digging out some info out of my brain, I forgot to mention one small bit of information regarding Metal Slug 4. This is just speculation by the rep, so we'll see when the final product comes out. Well, according to the rep, supposedly the background of Metal Slug 4 is 3-D. Similar to what you see with Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I don't know. I like the 2-D backgrounds of Metal Slug right now, but hey, nothing wrong with changing things up a bit if it's going to look good. I wish I had more info. for you guys, but that's all I had.

Maybe Jasboo has something to add. I hung out with the Pets all day, so I didn't really roam around the show.

OK, please, please tell me why you thought Zupapa sucked... can you give us a review of the game? I am looking forward to that one and I would like to know why you thought it was a bad title... It would be a big help to me and I am sure a few other of us who are interested in the game! Thanks,

-Nick

Also I think MS4 was a no brainer... glad to hear it is confirmed though... I just wish they would have confirmed the much rumored SNK vs Capcom, or Garou 2... oh well, there is ASI soon!!! I'll be there!

In these moments of financial troubles, SNK's safest bet is to stick with its actual best known videogame franchise... now, it's all about the money! <IMG SRC="smilies/cool.gif" border="0">

I heard a rumor that it is the Korean company Megaking . . .

Nazca of course did all previous ones, and had probably been working on this title when the remaining MS4 SNK employees may have disbanded from the company. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

However, did anyone read that news bit posted by mvsholic about the new game being worked on by IGS for the PGM system? (PGM, or Polygame Master system, is a very cool arcade system that is very recent in design and looks a lot like a Neo one-slot board, complete with pluggable cartridge). Anyway the game is supposed to be very similar in style to the Metal Slug games . . . will be interesting to see how it comes out!!

Nick,

Zupapa was almost a copycat of NITD, which I think is a great game personally (a little short though); however, unlike NITD, it didn't have a mystique to it. Honestly, I didn't play the game for 30 or 40 minutes, I played it for about 15 minutes the first time and tried, but couldn't get into it. Yes, it's similar to SNOW Bros. with minor updated graphics and gameplay.

Jasboo can add in some words of wisdom on this game too as he played it also. I suggest sticking to NITD, but if you have to have it, well, wait for the price to drop.

Speaking of Capcom vs. SNK, the rep did mention that it was in the works, but didn't seem too confident that it's a definite release. The game supposedly is programmed by Capcom also. At this point, I highly doubt it will ever surface (remember, they aren't making these games for collectors, they're making them for vendors to make money, so why would they release Capcom vs. SNK for the Neo, when there's already part 2 for the Naomi?) Just wouldn't make any sense. I hope it does come out though.

As for Garou 2, I don't ever see that coming out either. It's just my opinion. I don't have any facts on that, but if you take a business standpoint, there's too many fighting games out there and I think Garou 2, like Garou 1, will drown in the sea of fighting games. I agree with Fran. Yes, there's too much out there and they should come out with some type of addicting puzzle game.

I tell ya, finding Neo News isn't easy. The Japanese parent company sure hides alot from their U.S. distributors. They're almost clueless <IMG SRC="smilies/loco.gif" border="0"> over here.

I totaly agree,I only played metal slug for a week before I sold it as once you complete it a couple of times the fun is not there, anyone who would pay 1000 dollars for an aes cart must be mad, mine was fortunatly a cheap $40 mvs ,cheaper to buy the best neo cabinet in the world than that game!!!!
I wish the secret game was capcom vs snk

if I dont start using the spellcheck before I post I may go mad <IMG SRC="smilies/loco.gif" border="0">

Great MS4! I really doubt it will have 3d backgrounds..

I would have wished the surprise would have been more along the lines of MOTW2 or something along those lines... or maybe AOF4!! Yeah... that would have ruled <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Hey TRI, how did the Ultracade play? How close to the original MVS hardware?

I gotta say, I have the Neo blues lately, I love the games, dont get me wrong, but it gets harder and harder to shell out big bucks for these great games while all the while emulation and hard drive technology move towards making everything I have obsolete and worthless.

Gargoyle,

don't worry so much about your collection. yes, this emulation stuff is great, but who says it's cheap? the hard drive alone for the unit must cost $1500.00+. yes, it's cheap compared to carts, but I'd rather much have the carts because they are transportable. If I want to play a game at a friend's place, uh, how are you going to carry that damn hard drive over? for collector's and pure gamers, the ultracade isn't ideal. it's designed for arcades first and foremost. i wouldn't mind having one as an extra unit, but it could never be my main unit.

once again guys, don't forget that you cannot play the encrypted games on it. anything after MS3, forget it, you're stuck with pure old school.

as for gameplay, it played perfectly. I couldn't tell the difference between that and the cart version. the Metal Slug 2 version of it had a graphical glitch on the second stage. super dodge ball, bust a move 2, twinkle star sprites, baseball stars 2 and neo driftout played flawlessly. some one's gotta help apple with their cabinet design. the machines they had on display looked like ass. <IMG SRC="smilies/tickled.gif" border="0">
