Hey Dan, anyway you could somehow manage to twist the arm of the powers that be over at Gamepro to do a little writeup on KOF 2001. All I really ask for is 1 or 2 pages. It would be very hip of you and you'd be the only mag doing it. At the very least it deserves more than the latest Army Men game.

This would be very cool. Whaddaya say?

They still publish Gamepro? lol, who knew.

The last time I read gamepro (ok any gaming mag) was like 95 or so.

I still remember that first season of Nintendo Power, those covers were classic.

What, you can't get subscriptions in Graymalkin?

We will be covering AMOA in the next ish, so if the game's there, it will likely get a mention--but I don't know if it's planned to be shown or not (last I heard, I thought not). We are not currently getting review copies of MVS games, though I've dropped Apple a note asking if we can be kept in the loop and/or receive review materials. I have gotten no response. I'm hoping that our rep who will attend the show will make contact with a live human being.

I've actually pitched a little "MVS Lives" type article for our coin-op column, hoping to cover Kof 2001, Zupapa and NitD, but much depends on having those games to play/screen, and then being able to convince people here that it's something we should give space to while there are so many brand-new consumer consoles and software to cover. You can understand that in a mag like ours, it's hard to win battles for niche systems when there are major mass-market movements going on like GameCube and Xbox that take most of the space.

I will let you know any good news. But I'm trying, just have to push softly.

Thanks for whatever help you can give us, Dan!

I know most magazines consider the Neo dead as of '96 - '97, or so (I remember it constantly being on the "R.I.P." sections of various magazines in their year end reviews).

The only one that I've seen continual coverage in is, believe it or not, Tips 'N' Tricks (probably because they also do write ups of arcade games). I remember seeing one for, I think, Metal Slug 3 (it was either that or Prehistoric Isle 2 - not the most recent game I know, but hey... beggers can't be choosers! ).

Just out of curiosity, what was the last Neo game GamePro featured in their magazine?

lol, I don't think the Neo was even important enough to have in an RIP section to most of these mags.

I did see an RIP supergrafx section in an old mag (forgot which one), this was in like 94, when the first rumors of the Saturn were coming out. They had an artical on the Super Grafx and it's games.

I still have a copy of gamepro where on the front cover they had a pic of all the steeetfighter characters and inside it had a indepth preview of super street fighter and fatal fury special,8 pages long plus tactics and moves, you cant beat that They even said ffs has more to offer than ssf!those were the days when you could always expect to see one neo game getting review,I still love the fact that when they reviewed fatal fury 2,it got all top scores,I have that in a special folder, its what made me get my neo,I too though never knew gamepro was still out there as in england we no longer get it.

Major Mike was one of the strongest Neo-Geo supporters I've ever met. Major's been our arcade columnist for ages and I've slowly wormed my way in as deputy. When I joined the mag back in 97, he was so fervent about SNK that he had to endure a lot of teasing. But even AES was out of most of our readers' price range, and when we did surveys to find out what people owned and what they were planning to buy, Neo AES was a very very small percentage, so it never earned much ink.

I think the last proper Neo review we ran was Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers, which somehow I got assigned! Occasionally games have gotten mentions in trade show roundups--the one ASI show Major and I attended together had Prehistoric Isle 2, and we played all the way through it on the show floor--but we haven't run an MVS review since RB2.

We did do a few reviews of Neo-Geo Pocket Color games--MS 1st, Sonic, and Card Battle, I think. I know that two of the guys absolutely loved the Card Battle stuff in the office and played nothing else for a full week. We all liked the NGPC and were sad to see it go--I was about to buy one when it went under, and I'm still thinking of trying to find one second-hand. I'd love to play Metal Slug portable.

Of course, both Capcom vs SNK games have gotten a lot of coverage but that's kind of a different animal.

I used to go to Game Fan for my Neo coverage, but that mag is obviously gone. I remember talking to ECM when he was starting Game Go with Haoh, but now that may disappear

Go to gamegomagazine.com to see if you can help out in anyway.

<sigh>

We need more niche mags...

Strange, with all the MVS arcade machines you can still find after all these years in arcades, pizza parlors, bowling alleys, and other places, you'd think there would be some demand for Neo Geo and reviews. Not everyone can afford a $200+ game, but anybody can afford a $.25 or $.50 game. Then again, not all of these places upgrade their games..

When I was little, my friends and I used to have an inside joke of referring to porno mags as gamepro, after using gamepro as a means of sneaking the pornos around in class.

I personally can't read game magazines. They cover too much garbage and too little "black and gold." Worst of the group is EGM. They sold their soul long ago. Gamefan wasn't much better, regardless of popular notions. I never really liked Gamepro either (except for the memories).

I kinda like getting japanese gaming mags, cause all I do is look at the cool screenshots and ads, and you don't have to read any of the biased reviews (no offense to dan, he writes good reviews from what iv'e seen in the reviews section here)

I hate seeing people say such and such magazines writters are biased. For the most part all writters try to be as unbiased as they can be in their work. The magazine itsself could favor one system or another more, but thats because thats what the market favors...and that means thats where the money is at. No magazine wants to alienate their readers who love their PS2 or whatnot. Magazines try to cater to the wants of their readers, and writters try to do their best job 98% of the time. So they have oppinions on what they like best, everyone does, but that usually has no effect on how they write.

I remember the RBFF2 review, but not the neo geo pocket ones. I played the ngpc nonstop again on my train ride down and up from Florida, I stilled missed my AES though. It's still a shame that the magazines didn't give the ngpc more reviews though (I even was hopping more from Gamefan). Anyhow what issues covered the games?

PS Dan if you get some advanced MVS carts from Apple, you can always send them to Media, PA when you are done with them...

I apologize. I really thought we covered more in the regular mag, but it turns out we only did one lousy NGPC review--Metal Slug 2nd Mission in June 2000. We had a special issue on newsstands back in the Winter of 99/00 that had 18 games plus the Dreamcast Link in its own special section, but that was exclusive to that special issue.

I think you're talking about the Nintendo Power Ninja Gaiden II strategy guide. I have it. Behind the front cover is a 3-page poster. One side is a poster image, and the other is "Ninja Methods and History". Damn this is cool. Great game btw. It isn't impossible like the first one.
