Console gaming pirates are anxiously awaited a new mod-chip which is expected to open floodgates of copied PlayStation 2 software. Curiously dubbed 'Messiah,' the chip has already begun filtering into the European underground market. Reportedly, the chip allows PlayStation 2 owners to play copied PlayStation 2 software on CDR and DVD-R discs, and well as original games from all geographic regions. Moreover, it removes all DVD-Movie territorial protection. Several varieties of PlayStation 2 mod-chips have been available in the Asian marketplace for months, however, none have allowed direct-booting of copied games. In the past Sony has managed to incorporate a combination of software and hardware revisions to fool would-be PlayStation software pirates. It's currently unknown how Sony plans to defend against the 'Messiah,' but we'll keep you posted. Below a several pictures of the chip itself.

Well, aside from the pirate aspects, it sure would be a nice unit for playing imports.

NO SHIT!
I hate the fact that I would have to buy both a Japanese and US system just to play the games I want, especially since more often than not, the US release blows (fucking dubbing, ZOE!).

Are you sure it's plug n play? I read somewhere that you have to solder 20 something wires.

The funny thing is, they do it to themselves too. If the territory lockouts weren't so draconian to begin with, then the effort to develop an actual PIRATE chip would not be so strong. Like, the GameCube jumper solution is totally easy to make you GC territory agnostic. You think any company is going to bust their butt to build a pirate chip for that? Not likely.

Sweet, now I can buy a PS2, and play Jap games, I was always holding off, because I didn't wanna buy a jap and us system, and then have something like this come out.

The DVD all region is a plus too.

I'm really looking forward to one of these. I am sick and tired of not being able to buy JPN PS2 software because the friggin mods are such a pain the ass.

All orders removed! and Sony suing!</STRONG>

heh, it'll get out, or another HK company with use the design. Trying to stop mod chips and territory breaks is like trying to drown the ocean.

Sony should take a tip from nintendo, they never have given a shit about territory lockout, all their systems including gamecube were so easily modded it's a joke.

It also removes the Macrovision encryption from DVD playback, allowing for recording on VCRs and others...

Yea mod chip is cool for playin import and the dvd region thing but cmon man playin CDRs and DVDRs??
Thats foul man.

Thats why Gamecube went with that smaller CD format which is cool to get rid of the piracy but sucks in the multimedia thing.

I hope Sony wins and a new mod chip come out that only lets you play imports and all DVDs.

Actually ther Gamecube has already been hacked and game burns are already a relaity for it. The minuture discs used for the gamecube can be purchased in the stores and the hardware is HK made. Not that it interests me but just giving info.

Honestly, its unstoppable. No matter how much Sony tries, there will always be a way around it.

Yeah...I question that greatly. I've been using the 8cm discs for almost 3 years now. They only hold 180MB. The DVD variant holds like 1.4GB. I'm pretty sure they don't use ALL of the available space but...does anyone really want to have 10 cd's for each and every game?

Or are these specially burned/compressed like the Dreamcast Silvers?

Not that I support piracy, but there is no way to stop it. I for one support this new Messiah mod chip. It would be nice to purchase JP games and play them on my US playstation 2 without having anotehr playstation just for those games. Hope this chip comes out soon. Now for the ones that may use it for playing burned copies, that is up to those, I am only worried about the import asspect of it.

I will admit though, Sony has done a pretty good job so far keeping would be importers and pirates at bay with their design but it's slowly starting to unravel.

Well, online games that require a specific key are pretty well protected against piracy in the sense that you wont be able to play online if you dont have a legit key. Games like Quake3 or HalfLife have this kind of thing going on. Sure you might get a working key by a generator, but it will take forever if it happens.

Games that dont require you to be online though always get cracked one way or the other though.
