US MS3 Incompatible with MVS Bios Setting?

We all know how awesome Metal Slug 3 is so I won't go into detail about that. However I did notice that when I booted up the game with the developer's MVS setting the game would give me a black screen with red print saying that it is not legal to possess copied SNK boards or something similar to that. It also flashes small white text before this screen saying it is checking the MVS version. Anyone else get these messages? The game works fine in all Home modes and in the Developer Home modes.

MAS systems installed the chip, Jeff did the s-video and stereo mods and my system is Japanese. I know this really belongs in the Tech Support section, but more people will see it here.

Hmm... this is not good. We need an official answer here. Not Drunken Shaolin Devil crap. Has anyone tried to play the Jap release of MS3 this way? Or the re-release?

All cartridge versions of MS3 are identical, as are all cartridge versions of any neogeo game.

The japanese version behaves this way as well. It's a primitive stab against counterfeiting that SNK introduced back around the time SlugX came out.

I think someone else mentioned this before...but it never went anywhere. I don't have the mod chip in my neo yet...Does the Jap version give the same message? Anyone have a theory to why the US cart may be acting this way?>>>

Well, the main thing I can advise is to wait until the "How to Play" screen before you change it to Dev. MVS. That seemed to work for me when I had problems with the Phantom-1.

Here is how I play Slug X and Slug 3 in MVS mode with a debug chip.

Go ahead and start the game in normal home mode. Select your characters and go. When the screen says "mission one" at the beginning of the level you can access the debug menu (select +C on controller 2) without pausing the game. So switch over, set it to MVS mode, back out and give yourself as many credits as you need - voila, you're now in MVS mode. =)

I think that happens to all games when u reset the Bios chip when your in MVS mode. I get that all the time when I beat a game in MVS mode and then the game ends and resets. It's no big deal.

Regarding the above:

King of Fighters 99' Home cart was the first to use the newest program board with a new SNK chip. This chip is called the NEO SMA and is sitting between the NeoGeo system and the program rom. This chip does several different things - one of them is to monitor the status of key parts of your NeoGeo motherboard. The next operation it does is monitor the current system settings like console type (MVS- Home) and console language (US, Japanese, Asia).

If your slots are loose or the cart is not sitting perfectly in the system this chip may not detect everything its looking for and present you with a screen saying the system you have is not a real SNK made unit. Then proceed to shut down the system forcing you to power down.

A simular screen is shown if you use the developers bios chip to change system settings while the chip is active. The NEO SMA is not active all the time so its possible to change the system from Home to MVS in mid-game but you may find it will stop you if you try it at the title screen. The status of the chip is controlled by the program rom so it can change from game to game.

Games that have the NEO SMA chip:

Kof 99 (MVS and Home)
KOF 2000 (MVS and Home)
MS3 (MVS and Home)
MOTW (MVS Final, Home)

For those who are interested - Not all newer games use this chip. Games like Strikers 1945 Plus, NITD or Ganryu don't have this chip. Popular home carts like Kof99 and Kof 2k however do, making the "girls" over at you know where search out a second sac cart with a board that does not have the NEO SMA.

Best Regards

I've had the system glitch all the time, whenever I start fucking around with the different dip settings( its my fault no the chip acting up). Nothing ever breaks for good, it just pisses me off when I have to get up and reset or power off and on again. Dont worry about a thing. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Kyle,

Ha, I was wondering when someone would figure out the origin of those lyrics. I think the song was way before it's time. SLF unfortunately did not come out to the west coast to my knowledge. It would have been great to have them on the Holidays in the sun lineup. I have a feeling England's Partisans will be on tour soon as they just released a record on TKO (after what? 20 years or so??).

Speaking of sigs: Lemonflav, is your sig a quote from that (awesome) late 70's/early 80's movie about NYC streetgangs "The Warriors"?
