Metal Slug stated in an earlier thread that the Dreamcast has the best 2D capability of ANY home system out. Is this true? Does it really have the most powerful 2D engine of any home system? How does Guilty Gear X on the Dreamcast compare to the US Guilty Gear X on PS2?

the DC has a very good 2d engine as well as a good 3d engine(naomi).Yeah the GGX on the DC looks like the US ps2 version except that on the DC its a little smoother and has lesser rough edges.

also the fact that the DC enhanced the graphics of kof 98 and 99' to a great extend proves its 2d prowess.GGX on DC has absolutely ZERO pixellation. Its awesome and playing it on the VGA box makes it godly,hehe...

Yeah, with less animations of the Characters!

I have tried KoF98 on DC. Maybe you impressed by the 3D effect on the backgrounds.

I know I bang on about the DC a lot!
But, I really do think its just the best for 2D!

Even games like Gunbird 2 and Gigawing are impressive if you think about it?

Hmm,
I'm still on it

Another thing that does impress me is the sheer scale of a game like Marvel vs Capcom 2, The beautiful 3D backgrounds, the superb 2D characters, multiple characters on screen (OK so not all under direct control, but even so) No slowdown, just superb!

I look at that little white box, and you could fit it into a CPS3 board 4 times over!

Please don't get too nit-picky on KoF 98 DM for the DC - it was practically a launch title, and with that in mind, it was pretty damn good. Sure, I prefer the AES cart, but if you don't have the AES, KoF98DM is okay.

GGX is a different story. Very good transistion. Same goes for CvS 1 and 2 - nearly arcade perfect (little feat, I know).

THe Dreamcast is a Definate 2D monster. It would seem to me that it easily outperforms the PS2 in any respect.

DC is better than ps2 in 2d capability cos' of that extra VRAM that the DC has which is an advantage.

Has anyone else had a chance to compare the same 2D title on both systems? Guilty Gear X? What about Capcom VS SNK 2?

Capcom vs snk 2 on ps2 looks a little rough, especially the sprites when compared to the DC version. And in the ps2 version, the windmill stage don't look good either.Look at the jagged blades but in the DC its crystal smooth. The loadings on the ps2 version is a little slower but no so noticible.

Snake you know damn well that's not true, the AES/MVS may have limitless cart size capability, but it's still limited by it's aged hardware.

The saturn out does the AES in 2-D graphics and effects, there may be loading, but thats a given because it's on CD.

The Dreamcast definetly floors the AES, and don't do the comparison of Neo Ports vs the real thing, the only people at fault for that is SNK, because they can't do perfect ports on more superior hardware, in other words most of their saturn ports, Capcom seemed to port MSH vs SF, Zero 3 and XMEN vs SF just fine, which are all nothing the Neo could handle by far.

I may be wrong but couldn't the Xbox be a 2D beast?? With the hard drive plus 64 megs of ram you can cram a buttload of animation in there.

Imagine if they can stream animation from the hard drive the developer's would have a few GB's to work with.

Not only that but the XBOX was DDR ram, the Gamecube has a shitload of fast ram too.

And yea the hardrive could be ultilized to act as say the Saturn 4 meg cart did, the game could save a file to the drive and make loading non existent.

DoA 3 and Halo all stream data from the hard drive. Azurik (which is a great game if you play it for the 60+ hours your supposed to) uses the hard drive well too, because apart from the initial load, there is ZERO load time. I'm pretty sure you could pull off an assload of animation on that thing. Its a total graphics whore. Hell, I'm pretty sure 9gb would be enough to do 3D bacgrounds and a set of sprites for normal, 480p, 720i and 1080i. God, could you imagine KOF playing with sprites rendered at an increadible 1080i???

Better hardware is a GOOD THING. It frees developers from previous limits.
