"THIS MONTH IN GAMING HISTORY:
SNK's Video Multi-System units (which gave the gamer a choice of five different games) had been a hit with arcade operators, due to the ease with which the system's relatively inexpensive cartridges could be swapped in and out.
Heartened by sucess, the company decided to release a home version of the Neo Geo, which retailed at a whopping $399 for the basic silver model, and $599 for the Gold deluxe edition, which had two controllers and came packed with a cartridge.
The Neo Geo was amazing for its day, but its exorbitant price point, coupled with the fact that game cartridges sold for $199, all but doomed the system to failure.
Today, the Neo Geo units and games are highly collectible."

Yeah, I saw that.

And I couldn't help but thinking that all this is going to do is bring more people in who'll push up prices. Not that I'm helping either... I've purchased my share of carts at "market prices".

Oh well, it's nice to see the Neo get a little R*E*S*P*E*C*T.

Meh, Game Informer only supports the systems that did good in sales at their stores. If you didn't notice, they say bad things about: Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, SNK NeoGeo, etc. Really sad that they're so biased. They'd kick ass if they weren't.

EDIT: They'll say good things about the Dreamcast's launch, but after that it's nothing but negativity. Real shame I tell ya. It is!

Is this some kind of rare event?

We have a gaming mag here in sweden called Super play. They have mentioned neogeo at least twice every year. I have even read about neogeo in a swedish nintendo magazine from 1992...

There was a person who asked why they wrote about shit like nintendo 8-bit and SNES when there was a much better system called neogeo.

The reply wasn´t very nice. And drove up all the bad things (price, no mario or zelda and so on) about neo, and skipped the good ones. =)

They still having success you can prove it when you come in NEO-GEO LAND and can see a lot of SNK´s fans playing the old but good SNK titles.

SNK FOREVER no doubt about it.

I thought that the Neo was in the home first, and then, when it wasn't very successful it went into the arcades...

From what I know, the Neo started out first and foremost in the arcades as an arcade unit with the AES system originally marketed as a "Rental System" because the games were so expensive. That is partly the reason why the memory card was developed and also why some of the older Neo carts have "Neo Geo Rental System" specified in the caution section on the last pages of the manuals.

I guess the demand was high and SNK decided to sell the games and AES system to consumers as well shortly after that. But the two (MVS and AES) always existed together and complimented each other.

Actually your right, the Neo Geo MVS did start out in arcades in 1990, Baseball Stars Pro being the first Neo game I ever played. But the home system released in 1991, was ment as just that, a home system. If I'm not mistaken the Neo Geo Rental System was something only incorperated in Japan much like the Neo Geo Home Banking Service. And the Memory cards predate the home system since they were avalible (in Japan) on all the first wave MVS multi slot cabs, and not sure but I think remember seeing a couple of Memory card being sold at a Service Merchendise way back when, but they were always very rare when they where being sold, infact I remember there being way more systems being sold than Memory cards since the idea was kind of new to a generation raised on easy access Atari and Nintendo... I will state that only 1 of my 5 Neo Geo owning childhood friends ever had a Memory card growing up, and most never got more than 3 games before moving to the much cheaper to support Sega Genesis. Just another taste from the Neo Geo time capsole for ya.

I lost all respect for Game Informer when they gave Shenmue a 6 out of 10. Putting it lower than "classics" like the Bouncer. Biased as hell. Plus they totally failed to mention that there is still a loyal following for the Neo. They made it seem like it died 10 years ago. This tiny articals impact on the neo community. Zero.
