And also the fact that their TVs are 50/60 hz so they are PAL/NTSC compatible... Their DVD players are usually region free... Damn it!!

But region hacks are insaely common over here. Most shop assistants wont hesitate to tell you how to do a region hack on a DVD player if one is available, and some mail order places openly sell pre-hacked players.
Oh yea, and there is always Datel's PS2 Region-X disk. Some highstreet stores sell it openly, with no bother from Sony or movie companies at all.

I guess it comes from the fact that PAL terretories are always 'last in line' with DVD releses, so lots of people import, and televisions have been manufatured with NTSC-compatability to cater for this. (well, the newer ones are). Personally I have way more American DVD's than I do English ones. Not only are they cheaper, but anime releses are so scarce over here, that I practically have to import!
