Athena was also in the game Athena. I've played the NES version, which sucked pretty badly.

I know SNK has a PS title named "Athena" also.

She was in Athena first, then in Psycho Soldiers with Sie Kensou. Psycho Soldiers was also the very first game to have a fully vocalized song. Also I thought it was a pretty decent game for it's time (1987).

Also, Athena's Shining Crystal Bit DM and a few other moves are taken straight from Psycho Soldiers and Athena!

If you hate the music so much then bug whoever runs the arcade to screw with the dip switches and turn the vocals off, there's an awesome mix that has a synth melody instead of Athena's voice in the game. You can also set it to sing in all Japanese instead of all English. Also all of Athena's theme songs are remixed from the original Psycho Soldiers theme. ALSO, I believe Kaoru Watanabe is IN the ending of the game, which is supposedly what they're KoF'95 ending is based on (unconfirmed because I never beat it myself to see).

I'm very bored right now.

Athena's name is magic
Mystery
It's fun to see
Athena knows the answer
Fighting there
To keep us free
She's just a little girl
With power inside
Burning bright
You better hide if you are bad
She'll catch you
She'll read your mind to find
If you
Believe
In right or wrong
Fire
Fire
Psycho Soldier
Fire
Fire
Psycho Soldier

It loses something in the translation.

There were other voice overs for them too like Athena's infamous "ATHENA! IKIMASU!" etc. They're in English as well if the dip switches are set as such, so you can here "Athena! I will go!, "Watch me change!," etc.

The OST is scary, because if you play through just the voice sample track is does all of Sie and Athena's voices, then it does all of the different monster growls and death screams, then Athena yells "I love you!" at the end!

Ralf and Clark also had their own game before KOF. it was called 'Ikari Warriors'. In the game Heidern also appeared as their commander who brief the mission to them.

KOF '94 had only two teams that were totally new - USA/Sprorts Team and Japan/Heroes Team. and with the exception of Kim, Korean Team was also making its first appearence.

And that's kinda pushing it for the Sports Team. You can technically say that Lucky Glauber originally came from Dunk Dreams, a basketball game that is also on the Neo Geo. I also heard there was a boxing game as well, but the only one I know of was The Super Spy, and I HIGHLY DOUBT that Heavy D. came from that one.

Heh... Touchdown Fever! What a game!!

I thought Ring King was made by Data East? That game was such a classic back in Boston... I think EVERYONE played that at one time in the arcade, or on their Nintendo 8-bits. The patented "use a spoon to get extra health quicker" technique was born...

Which, of course, became "mashing" in MvC2.

Psycho Soldier is also on the C64. It's not a bad version of the game for that machine, although it's a 1-player game only (Kensou is AWOL and it's just Athena). The trademark music is in there.

I used to play Ring King quite a bit. One nice feature is the gambling screen, where you try to call the round in which you will KO the opponent. Call it correctly and get a large bonus.

I think Bryan Battler is probably Football Frenzy. I'd like to know what game Heavy D! came from... but it's probably nothing on the Neo. I'm wondering if he is indeed new for KOF.

You're right! Ring King was by Data East...ARG! I KNOW SNK made a non Neo Geo boxing game right around/around the same time as when the Neo Geo came out, I think

Brian looks like the guy on the title screen of Touchdown Fever

Sorry, don't mean to plug my site in here again, but you can check out a review I did of the game "Psycho Soldier" that I wrote a while ago. There's some screens and info about other Athena games on there, as well as an FAQ. I also thought it was quite a good game for its time.

Review here: http://www.neogeoforlife.com/misc/psycho%20soldier.shtml

And something that has not come up yet in this thread... don't forget to play KOF '97 with the team Athena, Ralf and Clark. During the ending you get to see a picture of all 3 of them and Kensou in their pre-KOF glory.

Not sure what the boxing game is, maybe 3-Count Bout? I will look for Heavy D some other time.

Good review, Kazuya.

I have to agree about the cover art for that Spectrum version. UGH! That picture just isn't Psycho Soldier, IMO.

Have a look on the review of mine that I posted about above - there is an FAQ for the game which has all the lyrics and I mentioned them in the review too. I think what Neo Rasa posted was slightly wrong

Its "mystery is what you see", not "mystery is fun to see" I think
