I emailed this to Bobak!, just like outsider. Here are my impressions. Sorry to start a new thread. Enjoy. It's not very great. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Review for the SEGA Dreamcast version of CAPCOM vs. SNK 2, by Rade Kuruc.

Great anticipation was what I had for this title. CAPCOM vs. SNK 2, for me, is probably the biggest release of 2001. Man, I couldn’t wait to get this title and although I did not have the highest of high hopes for it, I knew it was going to be great and better than the first one. It had to be.

I had the item ordered from NCSX for months. The morning it was to arrive, I was watching the tracking information like an eagle and finally, the package was in my city. So I turned off the computer monitor, turned on the TV, masturbated, ate corn chips and patiently waited for the delivery person to buzz my apartment.

He never did buzz. I refreshed the tracking info screen and noticed that my landlady had accepted the package at 12:30 PM. I noticed this at 4:30 PM. How the hell did that happen? This is worse than the time she stole my Kellogg’s Corn Pops. That bitch! It was no real matter as I just knocked on her door and she handed it over. Anything else and I would have had to deliver great bodily damage.

Never has my modified Dreamcast been as useful as it was the day I got this game and merely slapped it in, sans boot disk, and enjoyed. On the review!

Now, not to bash the first one, but it definitely had its share of problems. It was unbalanced, played rough, looked so-so and had mostly bad music. I could go on and on about the specifics but this is not a review of the first game. This is a review of a game so much better, so much prettier and so much more polished that it makes the first one look like a prototype.

Before I carry on, I must say that this is a CAPCOM game. If you have played a recent CAPCOM game of the 2D persuasion, you know what to expect here. Game-play is in the same vein as Street Fighter Alpha 3, actually, sprinkled with the spirit of King of Fighters, of course. It feels very similar to the first but with one major change, which is the addition of 2 buttons. This changes things substantially. Street Fighter folk play as they should, and the SNK characters are enabled with an extra punch and kick. One instance in which I found this change to the 6-button dynamic for SNK people interesting is in the way they enhanced Rock Howard. If you are familiar with his “catch and attack” tactics in MOTW, then you know that he has a ‘low’ catch and a ‘high’ catch. In CAPCOM vs. SNK 2, they have enabled him with 3 levels; low medium and high, which is very cool. These are the kind of changes you can expect to your beloved SNK cast as they have essentially been CAPCOMized. The feel is not at all SNK, which is good, bad or irrelevant depending on how you look at the situation.

Don’t forget the modification of the ‘Groove’ system. As any of you who have any interest in this series will know, CAPCOM gave you the choice of two separate ‘Grooves’ or ‘styles’ in the previous game. The main differences were in the way the power bars charged up and what kind of art would represent your character. This time however, you have been given six grooves for maximum variety. Grooves C, A, and P represent the camp over at CAPCOM, while grooves S, N, and K represent the obvious. Each groove has its similarities to fighting systems used in previous CAPCOM and SNK fighters. For instance, there is a groove similar to Street Fighter Alpha, air blocks and all. There is even a groove that accommodates the Samurai Shodown crowd on the SNK side. These grooves really are the heart of what makes this game so much more than the first one and therefore better.

Graphically, this game maintains the look that was introduced by games such as King of Fighter 98 Dream Match, KOF 99 and Marvel Vs. CAPCOM 2. That is to say, 2D sprites superimposed on breathtaking 3D backdrops. It looks really sharp for the most part and is the best work of its kind on the DC. The only real problem is a fact that many others have made it a point to mention: The low-res, some times poorly animated sprites. For the most part, they are animated well (by CPS2* standards). The problem comes into play when certain older sprites show up. Offenders Include Morrigan, Zangief, Dhalsim and Blanka. It’s not that these sprites look bad, it’s just that their age really shows when placed against a recent sprite like Hibiki or Hoamaru. They really need to redraw some of these Street Fighter Alpha sprites.

Putting aside all of the reused sprites, all of the characters, new and old, look good. For instance Rock doesn’t animate as well as he did in MOTW and his shoulder pads are distracting but at least he blends in well with the others. I must say Haomaru looks stupendous, though, as does Hibiki and Geese has never been drawn better.

The backgrounds are quite cool for the most part. They top the stuff you’ve seen in Marvel vs. CAPCOM 2. CAPCOM went for a look that most resembles a 2D drawing with 3D effects. When I say that, I mean to say that although the backgrounds are 3D, they are rendered in a manor that does not show any sign of polygon graphics. They are quite nice. I need only reference God Rugal’s stage to illustrate this point as it is an amazing looking stage.

All in all the game looks quite solid. Sure, the sprites are not high resolution and they don’t animate like Third Strike but who cares? I don’t! For the most part, they look great. ‘Nuff said.

CAPCOM has not really had a lot of cool tunes in their games as of late. With the possible (and questionable) exception of M vs. C 2, the music has been really bland in their fighters. Now, although this music is not the best in the world, it is a definite improvement and at times can be quite catchy. More effort went into this one and it shows. At the very least, it is far better than the tunes from the first game.

Presentation wise, this game really comes together. The front end is really stylish and very slick. Finding your favourite character is hard at first due to the amount of characters and the small pictures, but you will get used to it. Everything fits together well and the presentation does a good job of masking any load times.

On the subject of load times, they are very quick. Quick enough that you will not even really notice them. That’s about all I have to say on that.

What’s missing? Andy Bogard. Andy Fucking Bogard! Where is he? He is such a cool character! Please bring him back! That is all.

In conclusion, I would best sum up CAPCOM’s efforts as something similar to what they do very, very often; release a game that isn’t quite finished, and then release the finished version 6-12 months later. Past examples of this syndrome include Street Fighter Alpha 2, Third Strike and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. What this means is that this is the version we should have received in the first place. This also means that I wasted 60 dollars on the first one.

In Summary:

Gameplay: 9/10—Classic CAPCOM-esque play with sprinkles of SNK godliness thrown in for good measure. I like it. CAPCOM fans will eat it up. The ones who follow only the book of SNK will utterly despise it-just like the first one! All in all, it is an improvement on the first. Really! Nothing that won’t convert the ones who ignored it last year, but enough to appease the existing fan base.

Graphics: 8/10—Well-drawn sprites for the most part-could use a higher resolution. Cool backgrounds.

Music: 8/10—I would have given last years version a 6.

Presentation: 9/10—Very slick, very pretty. A lot of time and love went into this.

Overall- 8.5/10—Very much worth the cash if you are a fan of SNK or last years version. If you didn’t like last years, there is not that much here that is really going to persuade you to buy this years version.

Side Note: The Fan Disc is pretty cool! It includes all the art for each character from both the 1st and 2nd game, a bunch of VMU (VMS in Japan, I guess) files you can download and use for pretty much all of the fighters CAPCOM put out on the DC and it comes in it’s own jewel case. NEAT!

* CPS2: Debuting in 1993, CAPCOM’s prolific arcade hardware (almost as prolific as MVS) that has been home to such games as Street Fighter Alpha, Vampire Savior and most recently, Mars Matrix (cool game). Debuted in 1993.

Accually I refuse to read reviews on games I first havn't played myself

I always read reviews after I form an opinion on a game, to see if the reviewer agree's with me, or is wrong

That sounds like a sound philosophy to me. I like it.

I'm the type who thrives on reviews. Reviews from different people with different opinions. After I read all of that, then, and only then will I plunk down the cash. This system works for me. I need it to function.

Ive seen allot of biased half assed reviews, most from the big game sites, fan sites ushually have BETTER reviews. Since their not getting PAID off by a certain company in advertising fees, so they can't afford to piss them off.

Take a game like Wild Metal on DC, ive seen reviews out there totally tear this game apart, and I got it, and love it, very fun game.

erm?
what a waste of time..
i seen what a friend had and
i wasnt really impressed.
it looks like the first one with more
chara. and more juggles.
as for how it plays i dont know if its
as disjointed combo wise like the first.
that would just suck some ass..
i probably wont play it indepth until i see
it in the arcades because i m just not going
to spend money on another dissapointment.
h...
i wont be totally negative though.
if your one of those fun boys. who liked the
first one that was in my opinon, a bad capcom game.
then i m sure you ll like this one.
eh...
well.. back to waiting for the SNK version...

Yeah, I purchased it for 15 dollars, myself. I played a bit and could not get into it. It seems like one of those games you really have to get into. I read something very favourable about it in ODCM and that made me purchase it.

I just know its one of those games that gets cooler as it goes along: rare kinda game.

Rade, quite excellent. You are one of the few here that has a reasonable grasp of the English language and it is a joy to read your work.

I also found the manner in which you voiced your review and the explanations for your opinions very good. You used many commonly understood references in order to get your points across making those comparisons very clear. Excellent review over all. Makes me excited to get my copy next week and happy that I held off buying until I could find a Fan disk set.

It's really more of an opinion than a review. I'll give my opinion. Don't take it as an insult. I read through your whole review, and it was well stated, but we have different tastes and perceptions.

And I disagree with a lot of the sentiment. Especially the music, which blows now. I'd rate it a 1. 1 good song on the entire sound track. The rest are remixed crap. I liked the music from CvS1 and Street Fighter 3 3rd, and I think the same people were on this one, but I don't think they were ready to make something worth listening to.

Then I'd say we look at how characters have changed and remained the same. Of course the 3 button system is a god send for scrub shotos looking for ryu's T.O.D. combo, but I don't see how this progresses the game. It complicated it, that's all. But some good was done in this version, I guess. Bringing together the normal and ex versions into one character has helped a lot of characters, namely Geese and Vice, I'd say.

Hibiki did not fare the transition well. Especially in the sound effect department. She has the most annoying clank sound as her sword is resheathed, and it's just a damn mumei in a plain wood sheath, shouldn't be loud excepth when she draws it. Shows that the designers probably did not play Last Blade 2 very much at all, and when they did, the volume was off. The most painful aspect is that you will not be ableto just get in an play an non-Kof SNK character as they were meant to be played. There is no speed mode, power mode, or TOP mode really. And then Hoahmaru is actually Genjuro in disguise (Genj's stance and sword). I rather doubt that the designers really gave a shit. I mean, who is really going to play with these outdated, outclassed SNK characters, guffhaw.

I like the existance of so many characters though, and I love to play with Joe, Terry and Mai, or Terry and Rock, or Rock and Geese! I mean, that stuff is awesome - what the game was meant for. Capcom almost got it here. If they maybe play some non-KoF snk games and get down what an SNK game is really about, add some better music (like the fjckers who did SF3 3rd), and try to draw staged condusive to fighting (maybe they would know if they played more Last Blade 2 or SamSho). I guess there will always be room for improvement, eh.

I liked the game because Capcom did a very admirable job of trying to represnt MANY different preferences. And although they were... maybe moderately successfull at doing so, they came through with a VERY solid product.

You can't please eveyone, but this game should please enough people to make it profitable so we can see a 3rd version.

All Capcom really has to concentrate next time is working and refining those grooves again. Maybe make it feel more...SNK.

PEACE!

Well, after 3 tries (CvsSNK, Pro and 2), them using the SAME FOOKING alpha and darkstalkers sprites for Sakura and Morrigan are unforgivable!!!!

UNFORGIVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO YOU HEAR ME CAPCOM? YOU DON' FUCKED UP!

No way I'd support a 3rd version, capcoms had their shot, I wanna see SNK's version, since MOTM was so awsome, i'd bet an MVS SNK vs Capcom would be the shiznit!

MOTW's animation is near the street fighter 3 quality.this game really pushed the MVS hardware to its limits.

Hey, just to let you guys know... I just happened to come across an import store here in LA that just got CvS2 and CvSPro in stock so I went ahead and bought them... (I may review both, especially the CvSPro).

However, I'm not playing them because I'm trying to catch up on all these darn (and very welcome) reviews... I still haven't even played my MS3 yet

In summary. All the old female sprites need to be remade. Sagat needs to be remade. The other sprites would look just as good with the same amounts of animation in their proper places. We wouldn't bitch as much. Only thing to fix would be adding more intros and a a specific winning picture with text for each character.

Guess that's it. Dosukoi!!!

crap...I erased 3/4 of what I wrote. I'll add it later.

Capcom should have completley re done EVERYONES sprites in Capcom vs SNK.

Kinda like when you compare Street Fighter 3 series to SF Alpha series, you KNOW they don't look the same.

If memory serves me correctly, SNK only has rights to handheld versions of a SNK vs. Capcom game, and Capcom has the rights to the console and arcade versions. Wasn't that the way they set it up back in 1998 when the agreement was publicized?

They did. When you win a battle If you hold start & Ferice Punch your character will say somthing related to the defeated opponet. If you hold start & roundhouse your team will talk to one other.

I think they do feel "SNK". Most of the SNK grooves IMO are very strong! "N" groove is the only groove where you can do a Lv3 super with two stocks. "K" groove when your in rage mode gets a lv3 super and you give more damage. As far as six buttons go, These are some of the strongest forms I have even seen some SNK characters in. Ryo with a Medium Kick is a beast!

Why is this still being said when beloved SNK used many of the same sprites for Years?
Man I love Iori, But man change your fukkin gear! Been wearin the same shyt for like 6 years.

Kinda like when you compare Street Fighter 3 series to SF Alpha series, you KNOW they don't look the same.

How can you compare? CPS2 has far more limits animation wise. the Alpha series is CPS2 and SF3 is CPS3. I would use a VS series title or Vampire to compare to Alpha.

Geez, let's all hope not. I think that would prove to be mighty short-sighted on SNK's end, as well as robbing us poor SNK-loving saps of seeing this match-up fleshed out PROPERLY.

I don't think anyone outside capcom or snk knows what the "deal" was, but the rumor was they each made a deal to release 2 games each, perhaps 3, since capcom released Pro and SNK is releasing Card Fighters Clash Expanded edition.

If the contract is up, you can always re-new it, Capcom did it with Marvel. Since they made how many marvel games? COTA, MSH, X men vs, MSH vs, MvC, MvC 2. Thats allot of games!

MvC3 is rumored as well.
