Well, here's my first crack at graphic design for the Neo. I started this mid-day Thursday with a blank screen and have ended up with the image you can click on below. As you will see, the front of the insert is somewhat spartan, but it is that way by design. I am, perhaps, not totally done with it but it is at least good enough for a single day's work and a first try.

Lemme know what you think!

Real Bout MVS Insert

Of course, the original file is at 300dpi and looks MUCH cleaner than the gif I have posted, but you get the idea.

Opinions and constructive criticism are welcome. I am curious if the shortcomings I see are the same you may identify.

I really like it. You said you were having trouble with Photoshop, but this turned out very nice... can't wait to see where you go from here. Are you going to be hosting the original files somewhere?

Oh and I do not think it looks sparse at all. I really dig the simplicity of the insert,

WOW, RyoGeo, the insert looks GREAT!! I really like the layout too . . . only one small suggestion. If you can rework the back cover to include 4 screenshots instead of two, it would be an improvement in my opinion. Just a suggestion, the insert does look awesome!!!

Hey that looks great! Here is my $.02. Did you think of Landscaping it so you have more room for the title? You could put Geese on one side and Terry on the other and then make the Title a little bit bigger. I just think that the pic of Terry overpowers the title of the game a little because he is bigger. Do which ever you think I think it looks nice. You did that in Photoshop or Illustrator? I want to make some inserts too...this kinda gives me some inspiration to make some of my own now......!!!

Cool design, RyoGeo. Kind of reminds me of a movie poster. It would definitely go nice in an MVS case for Real Bout!

Ryo Geo I took your design and changed it the way I was talking about to give you an idea what I meant. I don't know if it will show up here.....try this link....

Goddam! That looks pretty good, DJ! Hmm. And I was literally minutes from going to Kinko's to get it printed! CRAP! Now I wanna try it your way. It's funny, because I almost did it that way to start, but hcnaged my mind. I am thinking that now i may tweak it into a landscape. Maybe I will post some results later.

And BTW, Chimp, you were right. The four images look much better on the back. I was just getting tired last night!

Thanks for the input guys. I really think we are all making this a better effort!

Hey Ryogeo,
I really like the design. In this case I feel the Vertical does looks better than a landscape.
Just my opinion.

Also, I think four screen shots detract from Geese (being right on top a him). Who is your main focus on the back panel.
Perhaps slide him to the side, then have 3 screen shots in a vertical line?
With the text justified across the top.

Technically I only see a couple of things i didnt like.
Both geese & terry have a white "halo"
around them. So cut your mask tighter into the player so that white break doesnt show between them & the background.

On the back panel, along the top of the red horizontal vignette, theres a black
gap or line between it & geese,
Id remove that & let geese butt the gradation.
So as to give the Illusions of him standing behind it rather than half of him just appearing above it.

Also, dont just chop off terry. Id continue his legs down either to the edge of the page, or block it off around that neo logo.
Kinda strange how he just disappears.

Those are all just minor critiques, so I hope you dont mind.
Its a most excellent design.
Being your first I'm very impressed.
You have a good eye, & it looks very nice.

nick_, thanks for thr critique. Many of the things you point out I wasn't sure of myself either. Thanks for validating what I thought might be weird as well. Unfortunately, the image of Terry is pretty much all there. I could scale it out I suppose, but I don't know whatthat would do to the ratios. Anyway...

I have tried a landscape design as well. Which do you guys like better? I am still putting refinements on it, but the basic design is done. Here are the shots:

I wouldn't scale terry any larger.
He's the perfect size IMO.

If you cannot extend him, the I would
use the Landscape version. It does look very good.
I wouldnt cut off the tip of the star in the logo though.
Other than that, its looking very nice.
Good job.

I would prefer not to cut off the star either but unfortunately, that's how it appears in the game and I don't have a quality source for the image wholely realized. What I did do in an attempt to compensate is put the tip of the star at the spine/cover break point. The stunted points for both terminate at the exact same longitude (or lattitude, depending on orientation).

To tell you the truth, with as many of these as I would like to make, I don't think I have tha patience to correct the halo! Normally I would, but I have 34 more games to cover!

Thanks again everybody!

PS...Oh, and Bio, the movie poster thing was intentional! I am a huge movie buff (even took editing courses in college) and was striving for a dramtic feel. Thanks for noticing!

I like this insert it really is top quality, as good as this version is,although I think Geese should be made the centre of the insert, ie be on the cover and Terry on teh back.
